Tarique Foster was the top player for UMass putting up 14 points and one assist. There were three different players that put up at least 11 points.

This total is too high. Yes, UMass’s defense hasn’t been good this season, but this total is going to come down to the defense of VCU. Those losses to George Washington and George Mason a month ago are disgusting. However, Dayton still has the talent to beat anybody in this conference, and the Flyers are still 13-1 SU at home. In fact, Dayton has lost just two home games since February 2023. That’s two home losses in the last two years for those bad at math. I’ll grab the bucket in a game Dayton could easily win outright.

La Salle isn’t the worst team in the A-10, but they’re not off by much in fairness, and We’ve seen the VCU Rams take teams behind the woodshed that bring a lot more to the table than La Salle does in fairness. I just don’t see a world where La Salle ends up keeping this game close. So while the number is fairly large, I think I have to lay the wood with VCU in this spot.

VCU Rams Betting Preview

The Rams’ year kicked off on a 4-0 run before a pair of losses to Seton Hall and Nevada. It’s been five straight wins for VCU since then, over Miami, Elizabeth City State, Georgia Southern, Pennsylvania and Colorado State in succession.

On Saturday versus Colorado State, VCU held a one-point lead by halftime. After a 43-36 run in the second, VCU powered out the win 76-68. Tops in scoring was Joe Bamisile with 25 points, and Max Shulga had 20 points with 10 boards.

New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview

Over on the New Mexico side, they beat Nicholls, UCLA, Texas A&M-CC, Grambling and Texas Southern in their first six games. The Lobos are 3-2 since then with wins over USC, San Jose State and Western New Mexico.

In the Western New Mexico game last weekend, the Lobos didn’t have much trouble. New Mexico bombed in 60 points in the first half and 62 more in the second for a 122-70 blowout victory. Leading team scorer Jovan Milicevic posted 21 bench points with six rebounds.

New Mexico vs VCU Prediction

I’ll stay with New Mexico. The Lobos are fresh off an easy win over Western New Mexico, hitting a blistering 60.3 percent from the field with 41 rebounds. New Mexico has been rolling on the scoreboards lately. They’ve posted 80 or more points in seven straight games. Trouble is, the Lobos are also giving up some pretty hefty totals to solid offenses.

As for VCU, they shot 43.9 percent from the field with 32 rebounds in their win over Colorado State, but managed just 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the line. The Rams have scored 76 or more points in four of their last five games (all wins), so they’re posting some big totals as well these days. I like this one to be a hefty total and a competitive matchup, with New Mexico eking out a home cover/win.

The Penn Quakers have an offensive issue, shooting well below 40 percent from the field, and they’re 1-8 ATS on the season. It’s hard to get behind Penn with confidence given these struggles. It’s also unlikely Penn breaks out of this offensive funk against this VCU defense that’s 10th in points and allowed and fourth in defensive field goal percentage. Thick line, but I just don’t see where the offense comes from for the Quakers. Give me VCU in a comfortable home win.

Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview

The Hurricanes put up a nice start this year, winning their first three games out of the gate. Miami took out Fairleigh Dickinson, Binghamton, and Coppin State in that trio. Game four was a loss to Drake 80-69 however, then came another loss to Oklahoma State.

Matched up against the Cowboys on Friday, Miami was drilled 43-27 in the first half alone. The Hurricanes got better in the second half on a 47-37 run but still lost 80-74. Nijel Pack led the team with 20 points, and Brandon Johnson doubled on 12 points and 10 rebounds.

VCU Rams Betting Preview

Over on the VCU side, they kicked off the season with a string of solid wins. The Rams beat Bellarmine 84-65, Boston College 80-55, Merrimack 63-42, and Loyola MD 83-57 before suffering a close loss 69-66 versus Seton Hall.

On Friday versus Nevada, VCU took another tight loss. The Rams were up comfortably 34-23 going into the second half, then hit the wall on a 41-27 deficit for a 64-61 loss. Zeb Jackson led the way in the defeat with 18 points and seven rebounds.

I might try Miami here. The Hurricanes got off to an awfully slow start against Oklahoma State on Friday, eventually shooting a tepid 6-of-24 (25 percent) from the field and 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the line. Miami did win the rebounding battle 38-34 though, and shot a pretty solid 44.8 percent from the field overall. Still, the Hurricanes have now given up 80 points in consecutive games. It’s hard to win against that sort of a scoreboard onslaught.

As for VCU, they’re still reeling from their second consecutive three-point loss. The Rams played pretty rough in the second half against Nevada, ultimately shooting a tepid 39.2 percent from the field with a 32-30 rebounding disadvantage. VCU has now scored 66 or fewer points in three of the last four games, and I’m not confident they can keep a cover pace on Miami.

VCU has had offensive droughts at times and has been held under 70 points in 2 of its last 3 games. I trust Nevada’s defense more in this matchup, especially at the end of a back-to-back. I’m on the under here. These are two of the best teams in the country in the early going in terms of defensive efficiency, and Seton Hall’s games have seen no more than 113 points this season. On the other side, VCU can shut teams down as well and I think this is going to be a black and blue physical matchup. Give me the under.

Boston College Tested in First Game

Boston College faced off against The Citadel in the first game and they were able to secure the 69-60 victory. At the end of the first half, Boston College was up 37-28 but they coudln’t pull away anymore and they ended up winning 69-60. As a team they shot 39.8 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from behind the three point line. 

They allowed the Citadel to shoot only 12.5 percent from the deep and they are going to need the defense to be good from deep. Donald Hand Jr was the top player putting up 22 points and 10 rebounds. There were three different players that put up at least 11 points. They scored 69 points, but they needed the offense to be better.

VCU Dominated First Game

VCU in the first game faced off Bellarmine and they were able to dominate the game. At the end of the first half they were up 45-38 and they ended up cruising to the victory. In the second half the defense was even more impressive givnig up only 29 points and that was enough for the easy victory. Guard Max Schulga had a strong game putting up 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists. There were four different players that put up at least 11 points. The offense was good but even more impressive was the defense and they are going to need the defense to be good here. 

Why VCU Will Beat Boston College

• VCU has won four of its last five games played at neutral venues.

Boston College vs VCU Prediction 

VCU and Boston College are going to be involved in a lower scoring game here. Boston College’s offense faced off against a terrible Citadel defense and they only managed 69 points. VCU’s defnese really stepped in the first game and their defense is going to make another statement in this game. I do expect Boston College’s defense will have a little more resistance in this game though and VCU isn’t going to run up the score here. This game is going to be lower scoring and the under is going to cash.

Utah had a pretty inconsistent finish to the regular season, but they will be at home for this game, where they are 16-2 on the season. VCU lost in the A-10 Title game, so they were one win away from the NCAA Tournament, but their offense fell flat in that game. Villanova vs VCU Betting Prediction

Villanova had a very disappointing end to their season, where they were only a couple of plays away from beating Marquette in the Big East tournament, but they will get a chance to compete in the NIT. VCU was one win away from getting to the NCAA Tournament, but they played pretty poorly and were dominated on the offensive glass in their loss. Both of these teams play very good defense, so we should be in for a lower scoring game here. Villanova is one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country, which will definitely help them, but this is a pretty big number to cover for a lower scoring team. I think we are going to see a defensive battle here and I am taking the under.

Duquesne Dukes

The Dukes managed a 13-8 start to the year, then hit a 3-3 stretch in February. Duquesne would finish off the regular season with wins over La Salle, George Mason, VCU and George Washington. The first two tourney games were also wins over Saint Louis and Dayton.

On Saturday in their tournament matchup versus St. Bonaventure, the Dukes were up 28-22 in the locker room. Duquesne hit a 42-38 second half run and powered out the victory 70-60 in the end. Tops in scoring was Dae Dae Grant with 27 points, three assists and two rebounds.

VCU Rams

Over on the Rams’ side, they were sitting at a pretty solid 17-8 overall record in mid-February. VCU finished the regular season on a rough 2-4 run though, losing to UMass, Richmond, Duquesne and Dayton. The Rams’ first two tournament victories came versus Fordham and UMass.

On Saturday in the Saint Joseph’s tourney matchup, the Rams held a two-point deficit going into the second half. VCU came back on a 43-35 run from there however, ultimately pulling off the win 66-60. ANDREW’S FREE DUQUESNE VS VCU PREDICTION

I’ll probably lean toward VCU in this one. You could obviously make a case either way, though. The Rams finished strong in their Saturday matchup versus St. Joseph’s, eventually shooting 50.9 percent from the field with just eight turnovers. The bad news for VCU is that they’ve been below 70 points in three of the last four games. The good news is that they’ve held opponents below 63 points in three straight.

These teams last saw each other on March 5 in a 69-59 road win for the Dukes. Duquesne scored 18 points off 14 VCU turnovers, but also coughed up 11 turnovers for 19 points themselves. The key stat was probably the Dukes’ 11-of-12 from the line, which helped down the stretch. I like this tournament rematch to be close, with VCU powering out a cover/win. It’s something of a coin flip, though. Should be a fun one to watch regardless.

Josh Cohen has bee tne tho player averaging 16 points while shooting 54.3 percent from the field and 34.4 percent from behind the three point line. 

VCU vs UMass Betting Prediction 

The last two wins for UMass have been by only two points, and they aren’t going to be great again in thai game. UMass is giving up 70.7 points per game and their defense is going to really struggle again in this game. Look for VCU to run up the score and that is going to be the difference here as VCU is going to keep this game close. Back VCU to cover the spread here with ease.

Fordham Rams

The Rams kicked off February with a 10-12 record, then promptly lost four in a row to VCU, St. Bonaventure, Dayton and Davidson. After wins over Duquesne and George Mason in the next pair, Fordham lost to Saint Joseph’s, UMass and Rhode Island in the ensuing three games.

In their Tuesday tournament game versus Davidson, Fordham got a big bench effort in a comeback victory. The Rams forced overtime after a first-half deficit 27-19 and eventually pulled it out 71-63. Will Richardson was the leading team scorer with 20 bench points and three boards.

VCU Rams

Over on the VCU side, they managed a 19-9 run through their first 28 games, losing to McNeese, Iowa State, Boise State, Norfolk State, Memphis, St. Bonaventure, George Washington and UMass. It’s been losses to Richmond, Duquesne and Dayton since then.

Matched up against Dayton back on Friday, VCU held a seven-point edge going into the second half. The Rams ended up having to go to overtime and lost 91-86 in the end. Zeb Jackson was the top team scorer with his 26 points and five rebounds in 38 minutes.

ANDREW’S FREE FORDHAM VS VCU PREDICTION

I’ll probably lean toward VCU here. The Rams need a good effort after three straight losses, though. VCU gave up 53.6 percent shooting from the field to a good Dayton team in their last outing and got outmuscled on the boards 36-31 but otherwise didn’t play too badly. The Rams have given up 69 or more points in four of their last five games.

In the last meeting between these teams on February 6, VCU took a 75-60 road victory. After something of a slow first half, VCU picked it up in the second and eventually shot 51 percent from the field with 33 rebounds. This time VCU will need to get their ball control in order (13 turnovers) but overall they should be in good shape for the rematch.

Dayton lost to Loyola by a score of 77-72 in the game prior to Saint Louis, but did beat Davidson before that. DaRon Holmes II is averaging 20.1 points per game, 8.2 rebounds per game, and 2.6 assists per game. Dayton is shooting 48% from the field, 73.4% on free throws, and 40.2% on three pointers this season.

VCU vs Dayton Betting Prediction

Dayton comes into this matchup ranked #25 in the country, but they have been inconsistent over the last few weeks. The Flyers have picked up a couple of losses in recent weeks, but all of those were on the road. VCU has lost two straight games and three of their last five, but they did beat Dayton by a score of 49-47 in the first meeting. I don’t love how Dayton has played recently and I think they are a bit soft inside, but they play very well at home. Take the Flyers here.
