Oklahoma State is Struggling

Oklahoma State is really struggling heading into this game and all season that has been the case. Two games ago against TCU, they were competitive, but they ended up losing 73-72. In the last game against Texas Tech, it wasn’t as close and they ended up losing 92-55. At halftime, they were down 43-24 and they couldn’t bounce back. Marchelus Avery had a strong game putting up 13 points and five rebounds, but he was the only player that really found success with the offense. 

Oklahoma State currently sits with a 12-13 record overall and they have gone 10-15 record overall. At home this season they have gone 9-3 straight up. Oklahoma State is averaging 872.2 points while their defense is giving up 75.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 240th in the league while the defense is ranked 278th. Marchelus Avery is averaging 12.2 points while shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 37 percent from behind the three-point line. 

UCF is Suddenly Struggling

UCF is suddenly struggling heading into this game and they have lost six games in a row. Two games ago against Iowa State, they lost 77-65 and in the last game against Colorado, they lost 76-63. In the second half, they were outscored 38-27 and that led to the defeat. Keyshawn Hall had a strong game putting up 19 points, nine rebounds, and one assist. Darius Johnson put up 15 points, three rebounds, and one assist. 

UCF sits with a 13-12 record overall and they have gone 11-14 against the spread. Away from home this season they sit with a 2-5 record overall. UCF is averaging 78.4 points while their defense is giving up 79.4 points per game. The offense is ranked 79th in the league while the defense is ranked 347th. Keyshawn Hall has been the top player this season for UCF, averaging 18.5 points while shooting 45 percent from the field and 38.3 percent from behind the three-point line. UCF will play against Utah, Kansas State, TCU, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia following this one. 

Oklahoma State vs UCF Prediction 

Oklahoma State is going to find success in this game. At home, they have been a solid team this year, and I just don’t trust the UCF defense. UCF is giving up 79.4 points per game and they are going to have some major issues again here. Oklahoma State hasn’t been exactly known for their offense but they are going to have no issue putting on a show here. This is going to be a comfortable victory for Oklahoma State. Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Preview

Texas Tech has been one of the more consistent teams in the country so far this year. The Raiders have yet to lose consecutive games and they’re doing pretty well in the record column. During an 11-4 opening run, the Raiders lost to only Saint Joseph’s, Texas A&M, UCF and Iowa State. Otherwise it was wins over Bethune-Cookman, Northwestern State, Wyoming, AR-Pine Bluff, Syracuse, Northern Colorado, DePaul, Oral Roberts, Lamar, Utah and BYU in that time. Since then Texas Tech has lost just one game, falling to Arizona on February 8. Otherwise it’s been wins over Kansas State, Arizona, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, TCU, Houston, Baylor and Arizona State. That gives the Raiders a 19-5 overall run through their first 24 games this year.

In the Arizona State matchup on Wednesday, Texas Tech had a close call. The Red Raiders were down 45-44 at the break and had to fight through two overtime periods to eventually power out a 111-106 win in the end. JT Toppin led the team during the victory, pouring in 41 points with 15 rebounds, three steals and two blocks with one asset. Darrion Williams added 27 points with five rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Chance McMillian put up 14 points with four boards and three assists. Tops off the bench was Christian Anderson, who notched 10 points with five assists and three steals with three rebounds in 37 minutes.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Preview

Over on the Oklahoma State side, they were looking pretty good back in late December. The Cowboys have struggled a bit in the record column since then, however. Oklahoma State opened on an 8-3 run, falling to only Florida Atlantic, Nevada and Oklahoma among wins over Green Bay, St. Thomas MN, Southern Illinois, Miami, Tulsa, Seton Hall, Tarleton State and Oral Roberts in that time. The Cowboys have since gone just 4-9 through their last 13 outings. Those wins were over Kansas State, Colorado, Utah and Arizona State. Otherwise it was losses to Houston, West Virginia, Utah, BYU, Arizona, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Houston and TCU in that time, putting the Cowboys at an even .500 at 12-12 through 24 games so far.

Matched up against TCU on Wednesday, the Cowboys were down by seven points in the locker room. Oklahoma State made a valiant comeback effort in the second with a 41-35 advantage but it wasn’t quite enough in a tough loss 73-72. Bryce Thompson led the team in the losing effort with his 17 points, six rebounds and three assists. Abou Ousmane added 15 points with seven boards and a pair of blocks as the only other team player to finish in double-figures. Brandon Newman and Marchelus Avery each had nine points off the bench as well.

Oklahoma State vs Texas Tech Prediction

I’ll stay with Texas Tech. The Raiders had a bit of trouble burying Arizona State in a home matchup this past week, but to their credit they powered out the win in overtime. Texas Tech shot a nice 57.4 percent from the field in that one but also gave up 55.6 percent on the other side. The 38-27 rebounding edge helped out a lot; the 14 turnovers for 18 Devils points did not. Still, Texas Tech is cooking right now with 71 or more points in five straight games (a 4-1 run).

Back on January 26 when these teams last met, the Raiders secured a 64-54 win at home. In that one Texas Tech scored 20 points off 22 OSU turnovers. That likely won’t happen again, but I still like the Raiders to stay in front well enough to cover.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Preview

The Cowboys were looking pretty good in late December record-wise, but they’ve been on quite the choppy run since then. Oklahoma State beat Green Bay, St. Thomas MN, Southern Illinois, Miami, Tulsa, Seton Hall, Tarleton State, and Oral Roberts in their first 11 games, losing otherwise to Florida Atlantic, Nevada, and Oklahoma in that time. The Cowboys would hit a 2-7 run in the next nine with wins over Kansas State and Colorado amid losses to Houston, West Virginia, Utah, BYU, Arizona, Texas Tech, and Kansas State. Since then it’s been a 2-1 run with a loss to Houston amid wins over Utah and Arizona State in the latest trio. That gives the Cowboys a 12-11 overall record through their first 23 games of the year.

In the Arizona State game on Sunday, the Cowboys came out of the first half with a 43-33 edge. Oklahoma State hit a 43-40 run the rest of the way and took the eventual win 86-73 in the end. Jamyron Keller led the team on 14 points with four boards and two assists. Both Robert Jennings (five rebounds) and Arturo Dean (six assists) added 10 points in starting roles, while three different bench players chipped in 10 points each as well.

TCU Horned Frogs Betting Preview

Over on the TCU side, they’ve had a choppy year themselves and have barely been able to keep their heads above the .500 mark so far. The Frogs opened on a 7-4 stretch with losses to Michigan, Santa Clara, Colorado State, Vanderbilt, and Arizona. The wins at that time were over Florida A&M, Florida Gulf Coast, Texas State, Alcorn State, Xavier, South Alabama, and Montana State. A 3-6 run came next with wins over only Kansas State, BYU, and Baylor. Otherwise, it was losses to Arizona, Houston, Utah, Kansas, UCF, and Texas Tech. After consecutive wins over Colorado and West Virginia, the Frogs have since taken a loss to Iowa State for a sketchy 12-11 record through their first 23 games so far this year.

Matched up against Iowa State on Saturday, the Frogs hit a 42-24 deficit by halftime. TCU didn’t get any closer than that on a 40-28 second half and lost in a blowout 82-52 by the end of the game. No one on the team finished with double-digit points. Vasean Allette led the starters with nine points, two rebounds, and five assists. Coming off the bench for nine points, three steals, and three rebounds in 19 minutes was Trazarien White.

Why the TCU Horned Frogs will win

• TCU has won 19 of its last 20 night games at Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena against non-AP-ranked opponents.

TCU vs Oklahoma State Prediction

I’ll take a stab at TCU here. You could call this one either way, though. The Frogs were blitzed by a good Iowa State team over the weekend, giving up 59.6 percent shooting while posting just 35.8 percent themselves. TCU remained competitive on the boards but also gave up 16 turnovers for 22 Cyclones points along the way. Points haven’t been easy to come by for the Frogs lately. They’ve been below 69 in six straight games—a 2-4 run. If TCU can’t get their offense going Wednesday then they’ll have to control the game with defense.

As for Oklahoma State, they took care of a middling Arizona State team in a comfortable home matchup during their last outing. The Cowboys were solid on the boards (a 46-34 advantage) in that one but also had 14 turnovers for 16 Sun Devils points. Oklahoma State has been above 80 points in each of their last two wins, but below 64 in each of their last three losses. A higher total here will favor the Cowboys.

Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Preview

The Arizona State Sun Devils are 12-10 (3-8) this season after they lost to Kansas State by a score of 71-70 in their last game. Arizona State is shooting 43.8% from the field this season, but they have scored 70+ in three straight games. I don’t really love either team in this matchup, but I do think Arizona State is the slightly better team and I like them to get the win.

A 2-4 stretch came next, featuring wins over Kansas State and Colorado alongside losses to Houston, West Virginia, Utah, and BYU. Since then it’s been three straight losses to Arizona, Texas Tech, and Kansas State ahead of a win over Utah, giving the Cowboys an 11-10 overall run through the first 21 games so far.

In the Utah game on Saturday, the Cowboys came out of the first half with a 41-33 advantage. Oklahoma State kept the pace from there on a 40-39 run and took the victory 81-72 in the end. Bryce Thompson led the way with 20 points, seven boards, and two assists. The only other player on the team to finish in double-figures was Marchelus Avery with 17 points and two rebounds off the bench. Arturo Dean and Patrick Suemnick (bench) each had nine points.

Houston Cougars Betting Preview

Over on the Houston side, they came into the year on a pretty spotty run. The Cougars have cleaned up their act since the beginning of December, though. Houston hit a 4-3 opening run with wins over Jackson State, Louisiana, Hofstra, and Notre Dame among losses to Auburn, Alabama, and San Diego State. A win streak over Butler, Troy, Toledo, Texas A&M-CC, Oklahoma State, BYU, TCU, Kansas State, West Virginia, UCF, Utah, Kansas, and West Virginia again came next, then a loss to Texas Tech. The result so far has been a 17-4 overall record through the first 21 games of the season for the Cougars.

Matched up against Texas Tech over the weekend, Houston came back from a four-point halftime deficit with a 35-31 second half. The Cougars couldn’t complete the comeback though, eventually losing in overtime 82-81. Leading the team in scoring was LJ Cryer with 22 points, four rebounds, and two assists. J’Wan Roberts added 18 points with seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Milos Uzan put up 10 points with two assists, and Terrance Arceneaux had nine points with two steals and two rebounds off the bench in 31 minutes.

Houston vs Oklahoma State Prediction

I’ll stay with Houston. The line’s too thick to mess with, though. The Cougars are coming off a tough home loss to a good Texas Tech squad despite shooting 45.3 percent from the field with a 38-37 rebounding edge. Houston wasn’t spectacular from the line though (18-of-27 for 66.7 percent) and had 12 turnovers for 12 Raiders points in the loss. It was the Cougars’ first defeat since way back on November 30.

These teams have met before this year, back on December 30 in a 60-47 road win for Houston. The Cougars did well on defense in that one, holding Oklahoma State to just 18 points in the first half and 25.9 percent shooting overall. That said, it was a pretty sloppy game with Houston committing 12 of the 26 total turnovers alongside a 39-34 rebounding deficit (11-5 offensive). I’d like to see the Cougars get that shooting percentage elevated and cut down on the mistakes in the home rematch. If all goes well, I think Houston will bounce back from their tough weekend loss and start another win streak here. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Oklahoma State hang around though, at least initially. The Cowboys can surprise when they’re hitting their groove.

Utah Looks for Second Straight Win

Utah’s offense has been inconsistent heading into this game but they are coming off a big victory in the last game. Utah faced off against Cincinnati and they scored 69 points while the defense gave up only 66 points. Utah shot 53.1 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from behind the three point line. Gabe Madsen put up 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists. There were three different players that are putting up 11 points. Two games ago against Baylor they lost 76-61. 

Utah is averaging 76.5 points while their defense is giving up 70.1 points per game. The offfense is ranked 126th in the league while the defense is ranked 135tth in the league. The offensive rating is 109.5 which is 139th in the league. The defensive rating is 100.4 which is 112th in the league. Gabe Madsen is averaging 14.9 points while shooting 38.2 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the three point line. 

Oklahoma State isn’t Good

Oklahoma State isn’t good and they have lost three games in a row. Two games ago against Texa Tech, Oklahoma State was defeated 64–54 and in the last game against Kansas State they ended up losing 85-57. Oklahoma State shot 39.6 percent while they allowed Kansas State to shoot 52.6 percent from the field. Marchelus Avery had a strong game putting up 22 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Bryce Thompson put up 11 points, two assists, and one rebound. 

Oklahoma State sits with a 10-10 record and they have gone 6-14 against the spread. Oklahoma State is averaging 72.3 points while their defense is giving up 74.9 points per game. The offense is ranked 239th in the league while the defense is ranked 279th in the league. They are averaging 56.95 field goals attempted per game which is 267th in the league. Marchelus Avery is averaging 12.5 points while shooting 43.3 percent from the field. 

Oklahoma State vs Utah Prediction

Give me Utah here on the road. Even though Oklahoma State has done well at home this season, they can’ be trusted, and that is going to be the difference here. Utah is averaging 76.5 points per game and they are going to have no issue running up the scor where. I’m not excited to get involved with either team, but the fact Oklahoma State is this big of an underdog tells you what oddsmakers think of the Cowboys. Oklahoma State has lost four of its last five games and can’t score. Oklahoma State is also 6-13 ATS on the season. The Kansas State Wildcats have issues of their own, but six of their eight wins have come at home, and they’ve covered each of their last four games. Kansas State has been more competitive as of late and got on the board with a nice win over West Virginia. There are better options out there on Wednesday’s CBB card, but if forced to pick, I’ll lay the points with Kansas State at home.

Texas Tech Has Confidence

Texas Tech has some major confidence right now and they have won three straight games. Two games ago against Arizona, Texas Tech gave up only 54 points and that was enough for the easy victory. In the last game against Cincinnati, the offense was super impressive scoring 81 points and they ended up winning by 10 points. Texas Tech shot 45 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from behind the three-point line. JT Toppin had a huge game putting up 20 points and seven rebounds.

They are averaging 62.29 field goals per game which is 64th in the league. Guard Gabe Madsen is averaging 16.7 points while shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the three point line. 

Utah vs Oklahoma State Prediction

These are two teams have had issues this season and honestly trusting both of these teams is a scary though, which is why we are going to take the underdog here. Utah has lost four games in a row and they really looked lost on the court, especially with the defense. Dug McDaniel was the top offensive player putting up 12 points, five assists, and three rebounds. There were four different players that put up at least 10 points. Two games ago against Cincinnati, they won, but it still wasn’t all that dominant and they ended up losing 70-67. 

Away from home this season, Kansas State has gone 0-3 straight up. Kansas State is averaging 76.2 points while their defense is giving up 70.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 162nd in the league while the defense is ranked 151st. David N’Guessan is averaging 13.3 points while shooting 66.4 percent from the field. 

Oklahoma State Has Issues

Oklahoma State has issues heading into this game and they have lost two games in a row. Two games ago against Houston, they ended up losing 60-47 and in the last game against West Virginia they scored only 50 points while their defense gave up 69 points. The Cowboys shot only 33.3 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from behind the three-point line. Marcellus Avery had a strong game, putting up 15 points, five rebounds, and one assist. Even with his offensive game, the offense just wasn’t good enough for the team, and they are going to need to find a way to get the offense going.

Also in double-figures was Robert Jennings with 10 points, five rebounds, and a pair of steals. Arturo Dean played 23 minutes off the bench, contributing nine points with four rebounds, one assist, one steal, and three turnovers.

West Virginia Mountaineers Betting Preview

Over on the West Virginia side, they kicked off their season with a 4-1 run. The Mountaineers fell to Pittsburgh on November 15, but otherwise beat Robert Morris, UMass, Iona, and Gonzaga in that quintet. After another loss to Louisville, the Mountaineers embarked on another win streak. The victories in that time have come versus Arizona, Georgetown, North Carolina Central, Bethune-Cookman, Mercyhurst, and Kansas in succession.

Matched up against Kansas in their most recent matchup, the Mountaineers were ahead comfortably 33-20 at the break. West Virginia had to hang on in the second, however, getting outscored 41-29 on the way to a tight win 62-61. Leading the way in the victory was Eduardo Andre with his 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and four blocks. Javon Small managed to double up with 13 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. Also in double-figures for the Mountaineers was Jonathan Powell with 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals.

West Virginia vs Oklahoma State Prediction

I’ll lean toward West Virginia. The Mountaineers played a pretty rough second half versus Kansas in their last game though, so it’d be nice to see them pull off a complete effort here. That said, West Virginia still gets a lot of credit for dispatching a good Jayhawks team. The Mountaineers shot 43.3 percent from the field in that one with 32 rebounds and 18 team assists in a pretty good all-around effort, all things considered.

Overall this year West Virginia is scoring quite well but they’ve been a bit muted over the past couple of games. The Mountaineers have a combined 129 points in the last pair, which follows just one sub-70 game in their previous 10 outings.

As for Oklahoma State, they were steamrolled by a very good Houston team in their last game. The Cowboys shot a miserable 25.9 percent from the field with 14 turnovers for 16 Cougars points along the way. The good news is that Oklahoma State rebounded well (39). Not much else went right, however.

Oklahoma State has been below 67 points in three of the last four games—a 2-2 run. Prior to that, however, the Cowboys had been putting up some pretty reliable points totals: 76 or more in every game. Oklahoma State has played two ranked teams in their last four outings, and this one will be another tough matchup. I don’t see the Cowboys staying too close here, though they may hang around until halftime or so. Otherwise, it should be all West Virginia, so long as the Mountaineers play to their capabilities, that is. If WVU isn’t shooting well, it’ll be anyone’s game.

Houston Cougars Betting Preview

Houston went just 4-3 in their first seven games this year, losing to Auburn, Alabama, and San Diego State. The Cougars have won four straight since then though, beating Butler, Troy, Toledo, and Texas A&M-CC.

Matched up against the Islanders on December 21, the Cougars held a 46-27 edge in the locker room. Houston rolled on a 41-24 stretch from there to win 87-51. Emanuel Sharp led the team with 18 points and two assists.

I’ll lean toward Oklahoma State, but you could easily make a case the other way. We should have a fun matchup here, even if it’s a bit of a mismatch on paper. The Cowboys dispatched Oral Roberts pretty easily in their last game with 48.1 percent shooting and a 44-20 rebounding edge. Oklahoma State did commit 15 turnovers and didn’t shoot great from outside (21.4 percent), however. It was a nice return to scoring form after a tepid 131 points across the Cowboys’ previous two games.

As for Houston, they held Texas A&M-CC to just 32.1 percent shooting in their last game. During this four-game win streak, the Cougars have given up fewer than 52 points in each outing. Oklahoma State is really going to have to work the scoreboard Monday and take points where they come, but I think the Cowboys have a decent shot at staying reasonably close.

Both of these teams are coming off disappointing losses on Thursday in their first game of the tournament, but they will try to bounce back with a win here. Miami was very high-scoring in their first three games, but they had a lot of trouble with the Drake defense. On the other side, Oklahoma State had trouble with the FAU offense and allowed 86 points in the loss.
