I’m on Oregon State in this game. Saint Mary’s is almost in cruise control to take down the WCC regular season title with an upcoming homestand and some games left against the dregs of the WCC and I think that Oregon State could use another signature win here to bolster their NCAA tournament at-large resume in the event they don’t win the WCC tournament. I think catching points in this spot is well worth the look as I think Saint Mary’s kind of gets caught napping here once again. Give me the Beavers and the points.

Saint Mary’s Gaels Betting Preview

The Gaels have been a pretty sharp team this year. They’re sitting on a nice win streak right now and have yet to lose consecutive games. Saint Mary’s took out Towson, Chattanooga, Akron, Nebraska, Stanislaus State, Cal Poly, and USC in their first seven games, then lost to Arizona State. A 3-2 run came next with losses to Boise State and Utah State among wins over UTSA, Utah, and Merrimack, then another win streak. Those victories have come versus Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, Pepperdine again, San Francisco, Washington State, Santa Clara, and Gonzaga in succession. The result so far has been a nice 20-3 overall record for the Gaels through the first 23 games of the season.

In the Gonzaga matchup over the weekend, the Gaels were up 36-28 by halftime. Saint Mary’s hit a 30-26 deficit the rest of the way but held on for a 62-58 win in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Mikey Lewis, who came off the bench for 16 points, one rebound, and one assist in 22 minutes of action. Paulius Murauskas added 12 points with eight rebounds and Jordan Ross had 10 points with four rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes. Mitchell Saxen chipped in nine points with 11 rebounds in 31 minutes of work on the floor as well.

San Francisco Dons Betting Preview

Over on the San Francisco side, they’ve similarly been quite consistent this year. The Dons have only lost consecutive games once so far themselves. San Francisco beat Cal Poly, Boise State, Long Beach State, and Chicago State ahead of losses to Memphis and Clemson. The next 10 games were a 9-1 run with a lone loss to Bradley amid wins over Fordham, Mercyhurst, Saint Louis, Stanislaus State, Loyola Chicago, Montana, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, and Pacific. Since then it’s been a fairly choppy 5-3 run with losses to Washington State, Santa Clara, and Saint Mary’s among wins over Portland, Pepperdine, Oregon State, San Diego, and Washington State, giving the Dons an 18-6 record through their first 24 games this year.

In the Washington State game back on Saturday, the Dons were in the locker room with a 38-26 advantage. San Francisco kept it up in the second half with a 37-25 run and took the eventual victory 75-51 in the end. Marcus Williams led the way with 17 points, six boards, seven assists, and three steals. Junjie Wang put up 16 points and five rebounds in 29 minutes, and Ryan Beasley had 14 points with six rebounds and four assists. Jason Rivera-Torres added nine points with nine rebounds in 16 minutes of work off the bench as well.

Why the San Francisco Dons will win

• San Francisco has won each of its last 18 games at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

San Francisco vs Saint Mary’s Prediction

I’m going to stay with Saint Mary’s. You could make a case either way here, though; we should have a pretty great matchup in store if both teams play well. The Gaels weren’t at their best in the Gonzaga win though, shooting a measly 38.2 percent from the field and an ugly 50 percent (11-of-22) from the line. Saint Mary’s preserved the home win with a 40-34 rebounding edge and a strong first half, however. The Gaels have been below 68 points in consecutive games now, following 70 or more in eight straight victories prior to that.

The last time these teams met up back on January 23, the Gaels powered out a 71-51 win at home. Saint Mary’s shot very well in that one (61.5 percent) and the Dons didn’t (26.9 percent). The 37-25 rebounding edge in favor of the Gaels really helped as well, not to mention the 19-9 advantage on team assists. San Francisco should do better in the home rematch, but I like Saint Mary’s to power it out—provided the Gaels can get that shooting percentage up.

I’m on Pepperdine in this one. If you look at past results, you’d probably jump on Saint Mary’s in a heartbeat, and I don’t blame you one bit. However, this just doesn’t feel like the same Gaels team that we’ve seen from Randy Bennett in past seasons, as the defense is there, but they’re not as dominant in winning games with defense. I mean, Saint Mary’s has owned Pacific over the years and let the Tigers hang around for a lot of the second half in that last game and only managed to win by 10 points against Pacific. Pepperdine’s gone toe-to-toe with Gonzaga and Santa Clara through their first two conference games, and those are two teams I have as finishing in the top 4 in the WCC at year’s end. I think Pepperdine will be competitive here as well, and this is just a case of too many points. Give me the Gaels.

This may not be the most potent Gaels lineup ever, but the Gaels have it in the tank to get a strong win and cover at home here. Give me the Gaels.

Utah State in the last game faced off against UC San Deigo and they were competitive but didn’te make the pays late and they ended up losing 75-73. At halftime, they were up by seven, but in the second half, the defense gave up 43 points, and that led to the defeat. Karson Templin had a strong game putting up 18 points and six rebounds. Utah State on the season is averaging 86.3 points while their defense is giving up 65.5 points per game .The offense is ranked 15th in the league while the defense is ranked 51st. It’s going to be important that they get out to a fast stat here.

St Mary’s Played Well

There were three different players that put up at least 166 points. Mitchell Saxen had a strong game putting up 18 points, 12 rebounds, and one assist. Saint Mary’s on the season is averaging 75.9 points while their defense s giving up 63.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 182nd while the defense is ranked 28th. In this game, the offense is going to need to be lights out. 

St Mary’s vs Utah State Prediction

Utah State is coming off a loss, but they still have the value here. Utah State on the season is averaging 86.3 points per game and even against a good defense, they are going to step up in a big way again. St Mary’s has been a good defensive team but they aren’t going to be all that dynamic here, and that will be the difference here as Utah State will keep it close. Back Utah State against the spread. This is a strong play.

Merrimack Warriors Betting Preview

Merrimack’s season started on the skids with losses to VCU, Princeton, Rutgers, Butler, UMass Lowell, and UTSA in the first seven games. After that came wins over Troy, Canisius, Niagara, and Boston U in the next four games, however.

In the Tuesday game versus Stanford, Merrimack was outpaced by nine points in the first half. The Warriors got better from there but still lost 74-68 in the end. Leading team scorer Adam Clark came up with 32 points and six rebounds.

Over on the Saint Mary’s side, they beat Towson, Chattanooga, Akron, Nebraska, Stanislaus State, Cal Poly, and USC before a loss to Arizona State. After wins over UTSA and Utah the Gaels lost to Boise State on Saturday.

In the weekend matchup with the Broncos, the Gaels came out of the break with a 32-26 deficit and forced overtime. St. Mary’s eventually lost 67-65, though. Augustas Marciulionis led the team with 17 points and six assists.

I’ll stay with St. Mary’s. The Gaels took a tough loss to a pretty good Boise State team in their last outing, thanks mostly to a rough 37.7 percent shooting from the field and a 38-29 rebounding deficit. Saint Mary’s has scored 71 or more points in every win this year—and fewer than 66 in both of their losses—so hitting that 70-point mark here will be important.

As for Merrimack, on Tuesday they didn’t shoot too badly from the field (43.6 percent) against Stanford but also got out-rebounded 38-31 and had 11 turnovers for 17 Cardinal points. The loss halted a four-game win streak for Merrimack, but they’ve still scored 68 or more points in five of the last seven games. That said, I don’t think the Warriors will keep pace too well in this one.

St. Mary’s Gaels Betting Preview

The Gaels rattled off wins over Towson, Chattanooga, Akron, Nebraska, Stanislaus State, Cal Poly and USC before their first loss to Arizona State. St. Mary’s came back from that defeat for wins over UTSA and Utah in the next pair.

Last Saturday versus Utah, the Gaels were up 39-22 going into the second half. St. Mary’s was outscored 41-33 from there but held on for the win 72-63. Paulius Murauskas was the top team scorer on 29 points and seven rebounds.

Boise State Broncos Betting Preview

Over on the Boise State side, they beat Oakland, Corban College, Clemson, Hampton and South Dakota State in their opening 5-1 run. It’s been a 1-2 stretch since then however, featuring losses to Boston College and Washington State.

In the Cougars game last weekend, the Broncos were drilled 44-24 in the first half. Boise State got better from there with 45 more points but still lost 74-69. Andrew Meadow came off the bench to lead the team on 21 points and seven boards.

I’ll try St. Mary’s in this one. The Gaels did pretty well in their latest win over Utah (minus the 14 turnovers and 60.9 percent from the line), shooting 43.9 percent from the field with 40 rebounds. This year St. Mary’s has a few close finishes but overall they’ve been competitive and are scoring well. The Gaels have hit 71 or more points in all nine wins so far.

As for Boise State, they couldn’t overcome a rough first half in their loss to Washington State, eventually shooting a tepid 37.9 percent from the field. The Broncos have failed to hit 70 points in two of the last three games, so high-percentage shots should be a priority here. All things considered however, I like St. Mary’s to cover if the Gaels can keep the pace brisk.

UTSA Roadrunners Betting Preview

This year the Roadrunners have lumbered to a .500 record through six outings. UTSA has losses to Bradley, Little Rock and Troy in succession. Otherwise it’s been wins over Trinity TX, Merrimack and Houston Christian in that time.

In their game versus the Huskies on Saturday, the Roadrunners were up 35-26 by the break. UTSA was outscored 45-43 the rest of the way in a 78-71 win. Primo Spears was the top team scorer on 31 points and five assists.

I’ll lean toward Saint Mary’s I suppose. That said, with such a thick line you wouldn’t be crazy for going in the opposite direction. The Gaels are coming off a tough loss to a good Arizona State team, but this should be a solid opportunity to get some of that momentum back. Saint Mary’s shot 41.7 percent from the field with a 41-34 rebounding advantage in the loss to the Sun Devils, but did cough up 13 turnovers and missed six of 12 free throws. The 64 points were Saint Mary’s lowest of the season.

As for UTSA, they shot a nice 47.2 percent from the field with an excellent 92 percent (23-of-25) from the line in their latest win over Houston Christian. The Roadrunners did get outmuscled on the boards, however. UTSA has scored well this year themselves with 72 or more points in five of six games. If Saint Mary’s can assert some dominance on the glass though, I like the Gaels to power out the cover. That said, I’m probably staying away.

Neither USC nor St. Mary’s has been tested up to this point, so this will be a measuring stick game. I simply trust the Saint Mary’s Gaels more as they’re experienced, get good looks offensively, and defend at a high level. USC has athletes and can be explosive offensively, but the Trojans are known for going through droughts and questionable play. Heck, we saw USC already lose to Cal as 7-point underdogs. I’ll lay the reasonable number with the Gaels.

Cal Poly Looks to Bounce Back

Cal Poly faced off against Arizona State in the last game and they scored 89 points, but the defense gave up 93 points and that led to the defeat. In the second half they scored 51 points, but the defense just didn’t make enough stops and that led to the defeat. Jarred Hyder had a strong game putting up 27 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Two games ago against Eastern Washington, Cal Poly scored 82 points and they ended up winning by four points. Cal Poly is averaging 82.7 points while the defense is giving up 80.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 100th in the league while the defense is ranked 334rd. Jarred Hyder is averaging 15.5 points while shooting 39.7 percent from the field. The defense is going to need to step up in a big way here. 

Saint Mary’s Has Impressed

Saint Mary’s has really impressed heading into this game and they have a ton of confidence heading into this game. Saint Mary’s faced off against Stan State in the last game, and the offense scored 78 points while their defense gave up 38 points. Harry Wessels had a strong game putting up 14 points, three rebounds, and one assist. There were three different layers that put up at least 10 points. Saint Mary’s is averaging 80.9 points while their defense is giving up 64.6 points per game. The offense is ranked 131st in the league while their defense is ranked 68th in the league. 

Saint Mary’s vs Cal Poly Prediction

Cal Poly isn’t going to win this game, but they are going to keep it close. Cal Poly is averaging 82.7 points and they are going to have no issue running up the score here. Saint Mary’s offense is still better and they are going to do enough to win, but Cal Poly is going to score enough to keep this game within five or six points. Back Cal Poly against the spread. This is one of my favorite players on the board.

I’m on the under here. I wouldn’t be surprised if Saint Mary’s took it to Chattanooga here with how poor the Mocs looked against USC, and Saint Mary’s runs a tighter defensive ship than the Trojans, but I also don’t love the blowout potential of Saint Mary’s as I don’t think they’re going to have a ton of games where they run away from teams. Instead, I think this game grinds down to a slow pace a la true Saint Mary’s basketball, and I think this one comes in under the number.
