Vanderbilt Commodores Betting Preview

Vanderbilt got off to a great start this year, but they’ve been choppy since early January amid some tough matchups. The Commodores beat MD Eastern Shore, Southeast Missouri State, Cal, Jackson State, Nevada, and Seton Hall out of the gate in their first six before a loss to Drake. Wins over Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech, TCU, the Citadel, Austin Peay, New Orleans, and LSU came next, then losses to Mississippi State and Missouri. Since then it’s been a 4-5 run for the Commodores with wins over South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas. The losses otherwise have come versus Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Auburn and Tennessee. That gives the Commodores a 17-8 overall run through their first 25 outings of the season.

In the Tennessee matchup on Saturday, the Commodores opened the game with a 44-31 advantage. Vanderbilt was outscored 50-32 the rest of the way however, and ended up losing 81-76 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Jason Edwards with 24 points, one rebound, and one steal. Jaylen Carey was the only other player on the team to finish in double-figures, notching 18 points with seven rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes of work off the bench. Both Tyler Nickel and Chris Manon chipped in nine points each as well.

Kentucky Wildcats Betting Preview

Over on the Kentucky side, they similarly began the year on a great run but started faltering a bit in mid-January. The Wildcats went 14-3 over their first 17 outings, falling to only Clemson, Ohio State, and Georgia. Kentucky beat Wright State, Bucknell, Duke, Lipscomb, Jackson State, Western Kentucky, Georgia State, Gonzaga, Colgate, Louisville, Brown, Florida, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M otherwise during that time. Since then the Wildcats are just 3-5 in their last eight outings. The wins were over Tennessee, South Carolina, and Tennessee again. The losses came versus Alabama, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Texas. The result so far has been a 17-8 overall record through 25 games this year also.

Matched up against Texas on the road Saturday, the Wildcats were looking good after the first half with a 41-37 edge. Kentucky was outscored 45-37 from there, however, and ended up falling 82-78 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Otega Oweh with 20 points and five rebounds with a pair of steals. Amari Williams managed to double up with 18 points, 12 boards, and three assists, while Ansley Almonor added 11 points with three rebounds and one assist.

• The road team has won the first half in each of Vanderbilt’s last five games.

Kentucky vs Vanderbilt Prediction

I’m going to lean toward Kentucky here. We should have a pretty good matchup on our hands regardless, though. The Wildcats are coming off a tough road loss versus a talented Texas team thanks to a slow second half. Kentucky was competitive on the boards in that one but shot a tepid 41.9 percent from the field with 15 turnovers for 21 Longhorns points. The Wildcats will be happy to get back home following four road games in their last seven outings (and two more road games within the next week).

Kentucky took a 74-69 road loss the last time these teams met up back on January 25. The Wildcats had a pretty miserable first half in that one (a 41-27 deficit) and couldn’t dig out of the hole. The rebounding was good for Kentucky (43-30), but they got into turnover trouble with 17 for 14 Commodores points. The Wildcats absolutely must remedy their ball control issues ahead of this matchup or they’re going to suffer a similar fate. With a home game and a revenge aspect to this one though, I like Kentucky to power it out.

Jason Edwards is averaging 17.4 points and 1.4 assists, while Devin McGlockton is averaging 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds. AJ Hoggard is the third double-digit scorer and Tyler Nickel is grabbing 2.3 rebounds. The Vanderbilt Commodores are shooting 32.5 percent from beyond the arc and 74.6 percent from the free throw line. The Tennessee Volunteers beat Oklahoma, lost to Kentucky, and they play Texas A&M, LSU, and Alabama next. The Tennessee Volunteers are averaging 74.3 points on 45.1 percent shooting and allowing 59.9 points on 36.7 percent shooting. Chaz Lainer is averaging 17.4 points and 3.5 rebounds, while Zakai Zeigler is averaging 13 points and 7.5 assists. Igor Milicic Jr. is the third double-digit scorer and Jordan Gainey is grabbing 3.5 rebounds. The Tennessee Volunteers are shooting 33.8 percent from beyond the arc and 75.1 percent from the free throw line. The Tennessee Volunteers are allowing 27.5 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 34.9 rebounds per game.

Tennessee will be without Cameron Carr and JP Estrella. Vanderbilt will be without Karris Bilal, Alex Hemenway, and Kijani Wright.

Tennessee vs Vanderbilt Prediction

The Tennessee Volunteers are obviously the better team, capable of a blowout win, and they’ll be eager to rebound from another loss to Kentucky. With that said, Vanderbilt beat Tennessee last month as a 5.5-point underdog, and they have the scoring ability to compete again. This is also a rivalry where points often are valuable, and it’s not a coincidence the underdog has covered five of the last six games between Tennessee and Vanderbilt. A blowout wouldn’t be shocking, but give me Vanderbilt and the points.

Texas Longhorns Betting Preview

The Longhorns have been a pretty consistent team overall this year, but they do have a rough run in early January in the books. Texas kicked off with a loss to Ohio State in the opener, then beat Houston Christian, Chicago State, MS Valley State, Syracuse, Saint Joseph’s, Delaware State and NC State in the next seven outings. The Longhorns would lose to UConn before four more wins over New Mexico State, AR-Pine Bluff, New Orleans and Northwestern State. A 1-4 run came next with a lone win over Oklahoma among losses to Texas A&M, Auburn, Tennessee and Florida. Since then Texas is 3-2 with losses to Ole Miss and Arkansas among wins versus Missouri, Texas A&M and Arkansas, giving the Longhorns a 15-8 overall record though their first 23 games of the 2024-25 season so far.

In the Arkansas game on Wednesday, the Longhorns were down by 11 points going into the second half. Texas came back on a 46-43 run but it wasn’t enough to make the comeback in a 78-70 defeat. Leading team scorer Tre Johnson put up 25 points with four assists, five rebounds and two steals. Arthur Kaluma added 12 points with 13 boards for a double-double, and Kadin Shedrick chipped in 10 points with eight boards. Julian Larry was the leading bench contributor with 11 points and three assists in 28 minutes of work on the floor.

Over on the Commodores’ side, they were looking great as the calendar flipped over to 2025, however since then it’s been a choppy ride amid some very tough matchups. Vanderbilt won 13 of their first 14 games, falling to only Drake on November 24. Otherwise it was wins over MD Eastern Shore, Southeast Missouri State, California, Jackson State, Nevada, Seton Hall, Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech, TCU, the Citadel, Austin Peay, New Orleans and LSU in that time. Since then it’s been a 3-5 stretch for the Commodores. The losses came versus Mississippi State, Missouri, Alabama, Oklahoma and Florida. Otherwise it was wins over South Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky in that time. The result in the record column so far this year for the Commodores is a 16-6 run over 22 games.

On Tuesday in the Florida matchup the Commodores held a one-point lead in the locker room. Vanderbilt was blitzed the rest of the way 51-39 however, eventually limping to a loss 86-75 in the end. Jason Edwards put up 20 points with one assist in 31 minutes to lead the way in the losing effort. Devin McGlockton added 14 points with eight rebounds and one steal in 28 minutes. Tops off the bench was Jaylen Carey with 15 points, five rebounds and one assist with one steal and one block in 22 minutes out on the court.

Vanderbilt vs Texas Prediction

I’ll stay with Vanderbilt. The Commodores were highly permissive against Florida in their last outing, and lost the handle in the second half. Vanderbilt gave up a whopping 57.4 percent shooting from the field in that one alongside a 35-29 rebounding deficit and 11 turnovers for 13 Gators points. The Commodores did shoot well themselves (50.8 percent) but it wasn’t enough to keep pace. Vanderbilt has given up 86 or more points in each of their last three losses, so they’re going to have to put the clamps down on defense Saturday.

As for Texas, they’ve been a mixed bag record-wise lately but they’re scoring pretty well with 69 or more points in four straight games. I like this one to be a fairly high total, but Vanderbilt needs to keep things manageable if they want to power out a cover.

Vanderbilt Looks to Bounce Back

Vanderbilt in the last game faced off against Oklahoma and it was an ugly game. Vanderbilt scored 67 points while their defense gave up 97 points and that led to the defeat. All season Florida has been known for their offense, but in the last game their offense really let them down. Florida scored 44 points against Tennessee and even though the defense gave up only 64 points they still ended up losing. Walter Clayton Jjr was the top player putting up 10 points and two rebounds. Two games ago against Georgia, the offense was more impressive and they ended up winning by 30 points. 

Florida comes into this game with an 18-3 record overall and they have gone 14-7 against the spread. The over has only hit in 7 of the games. Florida is averaging 83.3 points while their defense is giving up 65.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 19th in the league while the defense is ranked 35th in the league. They are averaging 64.62 field goals attempted per game which is 11th in the league. Walter Clayton Jr is averaging 17.4 while shooting 45 percent from the field.

The Commodores just don’t have the top end talent to survive against teams like Kentucky, and we’ve seen it recently against Alabama, Missouri and Mississippi State. Sure, Kentucky is still young and has lost two of its last three games, but I’m siding with the talent in this one. I’ll lay the bucket with the Wildcats.

Vanderbilt has a couple of road wins this season and is 3-0 ATS in its last three games as a double-digit underdog. Alabama was a double-digit favorite last week against Ole Miss and lost outright. Vanderbilt has these games where it can explode offensively. I’ll take my chances with the Commodores and the points on the road.

South Carolina is Struggling

South Carolina is struggling and they have lost three games in a row. Two games ago against Alabama they lost 88-68 and in the last game against Auburn, they ended up losing 66-63. At halftime against Auburn, they were up 40-34 but in the second half they only scored 23 points and that led to the defeat. Collin Murray-Boyles had a strong game putting up 25 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Outside of him though there wasn’t a whole lot of production. 

South Carolina on the season is averaging 72.8 points while their defense is giving up 68.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 243rd in the league while the defense is ranked 96th. Collin Murray-Boyles is averaging 15.8 points while shooting 59.4 percent from the field. There were three different players that are averaging at least 10.7 points per game. South Carolina will meet Oklahoma after this game. 

Vanderbilt Have Issues

Vanderbilt suddenly has had some issues and they are struggling heading into this game. Two games ago against Mississippi State, they lost 76-64 and in the last game against Missouri, they ended up losing 75–66. Jason Edwards had a strong game putting up 20 points but he was the only real bright spot with the offense. Vanderbilt shot 40.4 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Vanderbilt on the season is averaging 83.4 points while their defense is giving up 67.4 points per game. The offense is ranked 28th in the league while the defense is ranked 78th. They are averaging 68.8 field goals attempted per game which is 71st in the league. Guard Jason Edwards is averaging 17.2 points while shooting 45.4 percent from the field. Vanderbilt will face Tennessee following this one.

Can Missouri Build on Last Game?

Two games ago against Auburn, Missouri had some major issues and they ended up losing 84-68. In the last game though, Missouri bounced back in a big way and they were able to secure the 83-67 victory. Guard Tamar Bates had a huge game putting up 20 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. There were five different players that are averaging at least 10 points per game. 

Missouri on the season is averaging 85.7 points while thier defense is giving up 68.7 points per game. The offense is ranked 11th in the league while the defense is ranked 108th. They have done a good job of getting to the free throw line and they are averaging 21 three throws per game which is the most in college basketball. Mark Mitchell has been the top player for MIssouri this season averaging 13.1 points while shooting 51.1 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the three point line. 

Can Vanderbilt Bounce Back?

Vanderbilt in the last game faced off against Mississippi State and they didn’t play well enough. Vanderbilt scored only 64 points while the defense gave up 74 points and that led to the defeat. Vanderbilt shot 35.5 percent from the field but only 19.2 percent from deep. In this game if they wnt to find success, they are going to need the defense to step up to really try to put the presure on.  Vanderbilt on the season is averaging 84.6 points while their defense is giving up 67.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 21st in the league while the defense is ranked 75th. They are shooting 47.9 percent which is 56th best in the league. Mississippi State Bulldogs Betting Preview

The Bulldogs’ season kicked off on a nice run, featuring victories over their first six games. Those wins came courtesy of West Georgia, Georgia State, Southeast Louisiana, Utah, SMU, and UNLV. Following their first loss of the season versus Butler on November 29, the Bulldogs hit another win streak that has lasted until now. Mississippi State has beaten Pittsburgh, Prairie View A&M, McNeese State, Central Michigan, Memphis, Bethune-Cookman, and South Carolina in succession over the last seven games for a 13-1 overall record this year.

In the South Carolina matchup back on Saturday, the Bulldogs didn’t have too many issues at all. Mississippi State was up by a downright dominant 43-18 first-half margin, then cruised the rest of the way on a 42-32 run for a big blowout win 85-50. Topping the scoring in that one was Josh Hubbard with 21 points, three boards, and two assists. Claudell Harris nearly doubled up with 17 points, nine rebounds, and two assists as well. Lots of bench players got in on the action, and that group was led by KeShawn Murphy and Riley Kugel, each of whom contributed 12 points with a combined 10 rebounds and four assists to boot.

Vanderbilt Commodores Betting Preview

Over on the Vanderbilt side, they also got off to a nice start with six straight wins to begin the season. The Commodores dispatched Maryland Eastern Shore, Southeast Missouri State, California, Jackson State, Nevada, and Seton Hall in those half-dozen outings. Vanderbilt would take their first (and only) loss of the season thus far versus Drake on November 24 but then got right back to winning. the next seven outings were all wins versus Tennessee Tech, Virginia Tech, TCU, the Citadel, Austin Peay, New Orleans, and LSU in succession.

Matched up against LSU in their Saturday outing, the Commodores were ahead by a fairly comfortable 34-27 margin by the break. Vanderbilt kept rolling on a 46-45 second half and finished off an 80-72 victory by the final horn. AJ Hoggard led the team with his 17 points, four assists, one rebound, and one steal. Both Jaylen Carey (eight rebounds; two assists; two steals) and MJ Collins (four rebounds; two steals) had 14 points off the bench apiece, and Jason Edwards chipped in with 12 points and two rebounds in 17 minutes of work on the court.

Vanderbilt vs Mississippi State Prediction

I’m going to try Mississippi State here. You could obviously make a case either way, though; this should be one of the highlights of the Tuesday college basketball slate and we’ll have a great matchup if both teams play well. In any case, the Bulldogs drilled a pretty darn good South Carolina team in their last outing, posting 56.5 percent shooting from the floor alongside 40 rebounds and 18 team assists. On defense, the Bulldogs held South Carolina to just 29.1 percent shooting overall and 10.5 percent (2-of-19) from outside. Mississippi State has now posted 77 or more points in all but one game so far this year, the outlier being a 66-63 win over McNeese.

As for Vanderbilt, they handled LSU in a tricky road matchup quite well. The Commodores shot 43.8 percent from the field with 37 rebounds and just nine turnovers in that one. The foul shooting (66.7 percent on 16-of-24) could have been better, though. Still, Vanderbilt is on a nice scoring tear themselves this year with 70 or more points in every game so far. This will probably be the Commodores’ toughest matchup of the season, and I like them to push the Bulldogs to the limit in a tight Mississippi State cover/win. Don’t miss this game.

I’m going to back Vanderbilt here. I liked this line a lot better when Vandy opened as an underdog, but I think everyone’s seeing what I see with Vandy that this is a really good team under Mark Byington. LSU’s a solid team as well, and you can see the positive direction that Matt McMahon has this team going in, but Vandy has been so good at taking care of the rock as well as forcing turnovers that I think that the Commodores do enough to grab the win on the road here. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Betting Preview

The Yellow Jackets won five of their first seven games this year, taking out Florida State, Georgia State, VMI, Duke and North Carolina. The last five games were a 2-3 run however, as Georgia Tech fell to Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Georgia.

In their November 29 showdown with Georgia, the Yellow Jackets took part in one of the most epic duels in recent memory. Georgia Tech eventually came out on the losing end after a whopping eight overtimes 44-42, though. QB Haynes King finished with 303 yards and two pass scores while also leading the rush with 110 yards and three scores off 24 totes.

I’ll stay with Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets’ regular season finished on the downer of all downers with the tough loss to Georgia, and it’s going to take some work to restore their spirits for this one. That said, Georgia Tech hung 563 yards (303 passing) and 28 first downs on one of the best teams in the country and should be proud of the effort—at least in some capacity. The Jackets have posted 28 or more points in three straight outings, helping lift their average to 28.4 points per game.

As for Vanderbilt, they faded after some early success in the Tennessee game, eventually posting just 212 yards and 15 first downs. The Commodores have had issues putting points up lately; they’ve been below 25 points in seven straight. Vanderbilt still averages 26.8 points per game overall, but a lot of that was much earlier in the season. All things considered here, I like Georgia Tech to rebound and post a nice cover effort in the bowl outing.

The Volunteers have a very good defense, but their offense has been inconsistent at times this season. Vanderbilt also has a solid defense, but they have lost three of their last four games, and their magic from earlier in the season has run dry. The Commodores have already had a successful season, but picking up a win in this rivalry game would be icing on the cake. I think we are going to see a defensive battle in this matchup and I like the points with Vanderbilt at home.

What a Start for Drake

Drake has found a ton of success to start the season and that has included in this tournament. Drake’s last game came against Florida Atlantic and their defense stepped up. Drake has played well heading into this game and they are going to continue that success here. Drake’s defense is giving up only 57 points per game and they are going to step up again here. I’m on Vanderbilt here. This is a coin flip game in my eyes, and in a coin flip, catching a couple of buckets sounds good to me. This is a really solid Vandy team under Bylington so far that’s well-coached as Bylington brought over a lot of the philosophies that made JMU a powerhouse last year. Nevada is decent in their own right and they have a lot of size, but this Nevada team hasn’t traveled well the last couple of years in neutral site games, I think Vandy could steal this one but I’ll take the points to be safe.
