Utah State Aggies Betting Preview

Utah State has been a highly consistent team this year. They’re yet to lose consecutive games. The Aggies took out Alcorn State, Charlotte, Westminster UT, Montana, Iowa, St. Bonaventure, North Texas, Wyoming, Utah Tech, and South Florida in their first 10 games before a loss to UC San Diego. A 9-1 run came next with a loss to UNLV among wins over Saint Mary’s, San Diego State, Nevada, Fresno State, San Jose State, Boise State, Nevada, Air Force, and UNLV. Since then it’s been a loss to New Mexico ahead of a win over Wyoming. The result in the record column has been a 20-3 overall run for Utah State so far this season.

In the Wyoming matchup on Tuesday, the Aggies were down 35-30 in the locker room. Utah State came back for a 41-32 second half, however, notching the win in the end 71-67. The only starter to finish in double-figures was Ian Martinez with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Drake Allen led the bench contributors with his 11 points, four boards, and two steals in 28 minutes, and Karson Templin chipped in with eight points and six rebounds.

Fresno State Bulldogs Betting Preview

Over on the Fresno State side, they got off to a reasonable start this year but haven’t been above the .500 mark since way back in late November. The Bulldogs beat Sacramento State, Prairie View, and Long Beach State (with losses to UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Bakersfield) in their first five outings, then hit losses to Washington State, Cal Baptist, San Diego State, Santa Clara, and BYU before another win over San Diego. Losses to Cal Baptist, UNLV, New Mexico, Utah State, Colorado State, and Nevada came next before a win over Air Force. Since then it’s been five straight losses to New Mexico, Colorado State, Wyoming, Boise State, and San Jose State, giving the Bulldogs an ugly 5-18 overall record through 23 games this year.

In the San Jose State matchup on Tuesday, the Bulldogs were within two points going into the second half. Fresno State managed to force overtime with 38 points in the second, but eventually lost after two extra periods 94-91 in a tough outcome. Jalen Weaver led the way on 23 points with six rebounds and five assists. Zaon Collins added 22 points with eight boards and six assists alongside three steals. Tops off the bench was Brian Amuneke with his 19 points, seven rebounds, and four steals in 41 minutes on the court.

Why the Fresno State Bulldogs will win

• Fresno State has won five of its last six games at Save Mart Center following an overtime loss.
• The home team has won the first half in five of Utah State’s last six games.

Why the Utah State Aggies will win

• Fresno State has lost 12 of its last 13 games against the Mountain West Conference.
• Utah State has won 12 of its last 13 games against Fresno State.
• Utah State has won the first half in seven of its last eight games at Save Mart Center against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Fresno State vs Utah State Prediction

I’m going to stay with Utah State. Probably not touching this one, though. The Aggies recovered well after their ugly loss to New Mexico and a slow start in the Wyoming game. Utah State didn’t shoot particularly well against the Cowboys (40.7 percent) but did capitalize on mistakes with 18 points off 14 turnovers. Outside of that, it was a fairly shaky road win. Still, when Utah State hits the 70s on the scoreboard they’re usually good for a victory this year. They’ve got 71 or more points in four of the last five—with all four being wins.

These teams last saw each other on January 4 in a too-close-for-comfort 89-83 home win for the Aggies. Utah State shot well (48.4 percent) in that one but also gave up 48.3 percent on the other side and got out-rebounded 40-35. The Aggies desperately need a dominant showing here in the rematch and I think they’ll get it. That said, I’m probably staying away in reality. The Aggies just aren’t looking spectacular over the last couple of games.

The Bulldogs are allowing over 81 points against per game and defense has been a big concern in their last few road games. The last game for New Mexico came against Colorado State and they scored 76 points on the way to the eight-point victory. In the second half, the defense wasn’t as good and gave up 43 points. If they have a bad second half in this game, they might not get as lucky. There were four different players that put up at least 10 points. Two games ago against VCU, the offense scored 78 points and they ended up winning by seven points. 

New Mexico on the season is averaging 86.2 points while their defense is giving up 74.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 19th in the league while the defense is ranked 273rd. The defense for this team has been the issue and when they have struggled the defense has been the reason why. What a Win for San Diego State

Two games ago against Oregon, San Diego State wasn’t good enough and they ended up losing 78-68. The offense is ranked 227th in the league while the defense is ranked 54th. In this game, if the offense can find success, they are going to be in good shape to secure the win.

There is no other way to put it, this Air Force team is awful. In the last game against Army, they faced a backup quarterback and they ended up losing 20-3. He has been far too inconsistent and that has led to the offense being too inconsistent. Air Force overall this season is averaging 13.8 points while their defense is giving up 26.5 points per game. The offense is ranked 134th in the league while the defense is ranked 83rd. 

Air Force vs Fresno State Prediction

This total is too high. Air Force’s offense is a big problem and they are going to really struggle to get the offense going here. Fresno State is averaging 27.8 points per game but they aren’t going to run up the score because Air Force is going to really try to control the game with the running game. Fewer possessions are going to lead to this less scoring and this game will stay under the total.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Betting Preview

Hawaii got off to a 2-2 start this year, beating Delaware State and Northern Iowa around losses to UCLA and Sam Houston. The Warriors would hit the skids after that, falling to San Diego State, Boise State, and Washington State in the next three outings.

Last weekend versus Nevada, the Warriors were up 17-0 by halftime and ultimately powered out the win 34-13. Brayden Schager threw for 153 yards and an interception, but did most of the work on the ground with 19 carries for 120 yards and four scores.

I’ll go with Fresno State. The Bulldogs pulled off a pretty clean win over San Jose State last weekend, notching 401 total yards (275 passing), 22 first downs, and a nice 12-of-19 rate on third-down tries. On defense, Fresno State gave up 385 yards (284 passing) but notched four picks and held the Spartans to just 5-of-15 on third-down conversions.

As for Hawaii, they gained a nice 242 rushing yards (395 total) with 26 first downs in their win over Nevada this past weekend. The two takeaways and 12 Wolf Pack penalties certainly helped as well. The 34 points are more the exception than the norm for the Warriors this year though, so I don’t think they’ll keep pace with Fresno State.

Lewis has thrown for 1,132 yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions on the season. Nevada will face Hawaii and Colorado State following this one.

Fresno State has lost back-to-back games and now they are looking to bounce back here. Two games ago Fresno State lost to UNLV 59-14 and in the last game against Washington State, they lost 25-17. New Mexico Defense is a Problem

The New Mexico defense is a problem and that isn’t a good thing for this team. New Mexico in the last game against Auburn scored 19 points but the defense gave up 45 points. Two games ago against Arizona, New Mexico scored 39 points, but the defense gave up 61 points. Even in the first game against FCS-level Montana State, New Mexico gave up 35 points and they ended up losing by four points. Against Auburn, the offense actually moved the ball a little better than the final score showed. Quarterback Devon Dampier completed 22 of his 24 passes for 291 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. 

Fresno State Dominated Last Game 

Fresno State comes into this game with a 2-1 record overall and they are coming off a big victory in the last game. Fresno State scored 48 points against New Mexico State and they were able to secure the 48-0 victory. In the second and third quarters, Fresno State scored 17 points each. Mikey Keene completed 12 of his 21 passes 221 yards and two touchdowns. 

Malik Sherrod ran wild and finished with 15 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown. The defense also allowed only 61 yards through the air and that type of defense is going to need to be strong again here. If the defense struggles here they could allow New Mexico to stick around. Against Michigan, the defense gave up 30 points, and this should be an easier test, but they allowed too many yards on the ground in that game.
