Not saying the Hurricanes win it outright necessarily, but I’ll take my chances on Miami with the points here.

I think this is going to be a bit of a track meet with zero defense being played so give me the over.

The Cardinals have been great at both ends of the court and they should be able to take advantage of a Miami team that is allowing nearly 80 points against per game on defense. Take Louisville to get the easy win and cover at home in this matchup.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Preview

The Irish have had a handful of good runs so far this year, and also a handful of rough stretches. The result has been a .500 record on the season during a pretty erratic campaign. Notre Dame beat Stonehill, Buffalo, Georgetown and North Dakota out of the gate, then fell to Elon, Rutgers, Houston, Creighton and Georgia in the next five outings. Three wins over Syracuse, Dartmouth and Le Moyne came next, then four losses in succession versus Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State and Duke. The last four games have been a 3-1 stretch for the Fighting Irish. The lone loss came versus Syracuse. Otherwise it was wins over Boston College, Virginia and Georgia Tech, giving Notre Dame a 10-10 overall record through 20 games so far.

In the Georgia Tech matchup on Tuesday, the Irish came out of the gate with a 37-37 tie by halftime. Notre Dame hit a 34-31 advantage the rest of the way, powering out a 71-68 victory in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Markus Burton with 26 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals. Braeden Shrewsberry added 15 points in 35 minutes as the only other team player in double-figures. Tops off the bench was Nikita Kostantynovskyi with six points.

Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview

Over on the Miami side, they opened up the season on a very brief promising run. Since November 17 however, the Hurricanes have recorded just one win. The first three games were all wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, Binghamton and Coppin State. A losing streak came next versus Drake, Oklahoma State, VCU, Charleston Southern, Arkansas, Clemson and Tennessee. Miami’s most recent victory came on December 15 versus Presbyterian, and since then it’s been another string of losses. Those have come versus Mount St. Mary’s, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Wake Forest, Duke, SMU, Stanford, Cal and Virginia in succession, giving Miami a rough 4-17 overall record though the first 21 outings of the season.

Matched up against Virginia in their Wednesday game, the Hurricanes were blasted 40-29 in the first half. Miami managed to keep the pace from there on a 42-42 run, but eventually fell by double-digits 82-71. Matthew Cleveland did the lion’s share of the scoring in the loss iwht 27 points, four rebounds and two assists. Brandon Johnson was the only other team player to reach double-figures with 13 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals. Lynn Kidd was tops off the bench with seven points, three rebounds and two assists in 20 minutes of work.

Miami vs Notre Dame Prediction

I’ll stay with Notre Dame. The Irish had a little trouble getting past a middling Georgia Tech squad in their last game, but everything worked out well in the end. Notre Dame shot 47.2 percent from the field in that one with a 32-29 rebounding advantage but did have 10 turnovers for 11 Yellow Jackets points. Notre Dame has scored 69 or more points in five straight games and 71 or more in three of the last four (all three were wins).

As for Miami, they shot well in their latest loss to Virginia (51 percent) but also gave up a lot on the other side (54.9 percent). The 27-24 rebounding deficit and 11 turnovers for 18 Cavaliers points didn’t help matters, either. Miami is giving up a truckload of points to all opponents this season: they’ve surrendered 75 or more points in 12 straight games (a 1-11 run). Notre Dame shouldn’t have too many issues posting a hefty total here, even on the road.

What a Disappointing Year for Virginia 

It has been nothing but struggles for Virginia and they are coming off a loss in the last game. Virginia scored 59 points against Notre Dame while they gave up 74 points. There is nothing special about Notre Dame so it was awful they lost by that much. Virginia allowed Notre Dame to shoot 48.2 percent from the field and 52.2 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Virginia comes into this game with a 9-11 record overall but they have gone 8-12 against the spread. Virginia is averaging 61.9 points while their defense is giving up 64.5 points per game. The offense is ranked 361st in the league while the defense is ranked 23rd. They have a free throw percentage of 74.06 percent which is 99th in the league. Isaac McKneely has been the top player for the team averaging 12.4 points while shooting 42.2 percent from the field. They need to find a way to get the offense going here. 

Miami Keeps Losing

Miami has some major issues and there is no reason to believe they are going to turn it around this season. Two games ago against Stanford, they lost 88-51 and in the last game against California, they lost 98-94. Matthew Cleveland did have a strong game putting up 30 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. There were four different players that put up at least 11 points. The defense was a problem though and they are going ot need the defense to be a whole lot better.

Miami sits with a 4-16 record overall and they have gone 5-15 against the spread. The over has hit in 12 of the 20 games so far this season. Miami is averaging 75.7 points while their defense is giving up 80.6 points per game. The offense is naked 155th in the league while the defense is ranked 348th. Matthew Cleveland has been the top player this season averaging 15.1 points while shooting 51.7 percent from the field. 

Miami vs Virginia Prediction

Give me Miami here, but there are better games on the board to bet no doubt. I just am not sold on this Virginia team, even against a bad defense, and that will end up being the difference here. Virginia is averaging only 61.9 points per game and they are going to struggle to get going here. Miami’s offense is going to end up dominating and they will cruise to the victory here. Back Miami against the spread.

Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview

Needless to say, it’s been quite the difficult campaign for Miami this year. The Hurricanes started out well over their first three games, but they’ve only been able to put one win in the books since way back on November 17. Miami beat Fairleigh Dickinson, Binghamton and Coppin State in that opening trio, then hit a losing streak versus Drake, Oklahoma State, VCU, Charleston Southern, Arkansas, Clemson and Tennessee. The aforementioned lone win over Presbyterian came on December 15, then another string of losses. Miami has fallen to Mount St. Mary’s, Boston College, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Wake Forest, Duke, SMU and Stanford over their last eight games. That makes a 4-15 record for Miami across the first 19 outings.

In their game versus Stanford on Wednesday, Miami didn’t have much of a chance. The Hurricanes posted a 37-21 deficit by halftime, then limped to the loss 88-51 on a 51-30 second half. Leading the team in scoring was Matthew Cleveland, who notched 23 points with one rebound, one steal and two blocks in 33 minutes. Also in double-figures was Lynn Kidd, who posted 10 points with seven boards, one assist and one steal with four turnovers.

California Golden Bears Betting Preview

Over on the Golden Bears’ side, their 2024-25 season started out on a pretty nice run as well. California has struggled mightily in the win column since late November, though. The Bears opened with a 6-1 run across their first seven games featuring only a loss to Vanderbilt. Otherwise it was wins over Cal State Bakersfield, Cal Poly, USC, Air Force, Sacramento State and Mercyhurst in that stretch. The Golden Bears would hit the skids from there, notching a rough 2-8 run over the next 10 outings. Those wins came courtesy of Northwestern State and Virginia. Otherwise it was losses to Missouri, Stanford, Cornell, San Diego State, Pittsburgh. Clemson, Virginia Tech and North Carolina in that time. Since then Cal has taken out NC State and Florida State in their last pair, giving the team a 10-9 overall run so far this year.

In the Florida State game on Wednesday, the Golden Bears came out of the break with a 37-33 advantage. The Bears kept it going in the second with a 40-35 run and cruised to the victory 77-68 in the end. Leading the scoring was Jeremiah Wilkinson with 18 points, three assists and two rebounds. Mady Sissoko doubled up with his 14 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, while Joshua Ola-Joseph came off the bench for 14 points, two steals and one rebound.

California vs Miami Prediction

I’m going to stay with the Bears. California didn’t shoot very well in the Florida State game, totaling just 37.7 percent from the field. The free throw shooting helped save them however (19-of-22 for 86.4 percent), as well as a 47-42 rebounding edge and 18 points off 10 Seminoles turnovers. The Golden Bears posted 77 points in that victory, which was a nice total following fewer than 69 points in three straight games (a 1-2 run).

As for Miami, their woes continued in the Stanford game. The Hurricanes shot just 35.1 percent from the field and 13.3 percent (2-of-15) from outside in that one alongside 15 turnovers for a whopping 28 Cardinals points. That makes fewer than 55 points in two of the last three games, but to be fair the Hurricanes normally score better than that. The more pressing issue is the points given up on the other side. Miami has surrendered at least 75 points in 10 straight games (a 1-9 run), so California will have plenty of opportunities to score in this one.

I’m on Stanford here. It feels a bit concerning, laying a sizeable number with a Stanford team that could be in for a letdown after the win over North Carolina and facing Miami in this one. That being said, Miami just looks like a team that’s quit on the season and is just counting down the days for the season to be over. There’s a strong possibility that it gets far worse before it gets any better for Miami. Give me the Cardinal here.

What an Awful Year for Miami

It has been an awful year for Miami and they just keep losing games. Two games ago against Wake Forest they lost 88-78 and in the last game against Duke they lost 89-54. At halftime against Duke they lost 50-26 and in the second half it was even wrose. Miami shot 39 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the three point line. Lynn Kidd was the only bright spot for Miami putting up 20 points. Austin Schwartz also had a strong game putting up 11 points, one rebound and one assist. 

Miami overall sits with a 4-13 record overall and they have gone 4-13 against the spread. Miami comes into this game averaging 76.1 points while their defense is giving up 77 points per game. The offense is ranked 155th in the league while the defense is ranked 308th. They are averaging only 59.76 field goals attempted per game which is 151st in the league. Matthew Cleveland has been the top player for Miami averaging 12.8 points while shooting 45.4 percent from the field. 

SMU Has Won Two Straight

SMU suddenly has confidence again and they have won two straight games. Two games ago against Georgia Tech they won 93-71 and in the last game against Virginia they were able to secre the 54-52 victory. Against Virginia, they held them to only shoot 34.6 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from behind the three-point line. In this game SMU is going to need to get the offense out to fast start. 

SMU comes into this game with a 13-4 record and they have gone 8-9 against the spread. SMU is averaging 82.9 points while their defense is giving up 71.4 points per game. The offense is ranked 29th in the league while the defense is ranked 192nd. They are shooting 47.27 percent from the field which is 72nd in the league. Boopie Miller has been the top player for the team averaging 14.5 points while shooting 39.9 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from behind the three point line.

I’m with Miami here. I wanted to get there with Duke, and I do think that Duke is the better team playing with more motivation by a mile. However, Miami’s at a point where their chances of any postseason action are numbered, and games against teams like Duke are probably going to be the equivalent of a Super Bowl/National Championship kind of game and I think we could see a herculean effort here from the ‘Canes. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if Duke came in and blew Miami’s doors off, but the ‘Canes still have some talent and I think they battle here. Give me the ’Canes and the points.

Wake Forest has won four of their last five games and their lone conference loss came on the road at Clemson. The Demon Deacons are only shooting 43.6% from the field this year, but they are the much better defensive team. I know Miami is most likely going to turn things around eventually, but I am not backing them until I see the results. Take Wake in this contest.

Florida State has won the last three games played between the two teams. Last March it was the Seminoles that were able to secure the 83-75 victory. 

Miami is Awful

Miami has already made a coaching change this season but that hasn’t led to more success. In the last game against Virginia Tech, Miami scored 85 points but it wasn’t enough as the defense gave up 86 points. Miami shot 58.9 percent from the field and 47.1 percent from behind the three-point line, but it wasn’t enough with the defense really struggling. Matthew Cleveland had a strong game putting up 21 points, three assists, and two rebounds.  There were three different players that put up at least 12 points.

Miami is averaging 78.4 points while their defense is giving up 75.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 108th in the league while the defense is ranked 284th. They are shooting 48.6 percent from the field which is 45th in the league. Matthew Cleveland is averaging 12.7 points while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from behind the three-point line. Miami’s defense is going to need to be better. 

Florida State Looks for Second Straight Win

Florida State lost a couple of games ago against Louisville but in the last game against Syracuse, they were able to bounce back in a big way. Florida State scored 90 points and they ended up winning by 16 points. In the second half, they scored 54 points and they ended up cruising to the victory. There were four different players that pu up at least 14 points. Daqan Davis had a strong game putting up 18 points, three rebounds, and one assist. They also shot 53.6 percent from the field. 

Florida State is averaging 79.1 points while their defense is giving up 66.5 points per game. The offense is ranked 95th in the league while the defense is ranked 133rd. They do a good job of getting to the free throw line and they are averaging 18.2 attempts from the charity stripe a game. Jamir Watkins has been the top player this year and is currently averaging 19.3 points while shooting 44 percent from the field and 32.4 percent from behind the three-point line. Florida State will meet Clemson, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, and California after this game.

Why Florida State Will Beat Miami

Away from home, Florida State is 0-2 which gives me a bit of concern but I still believe they are the better team in this matchup. This Florida State offense is averaging 79.1 points per game and they are going to have no issue running up the score here. This Miami defense can’t be trusted and it’s going to be Florida State that is going to get the job done. Back the Seminoles against the spread here.

Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview

The Hurricanes opened the season on a nice run and everything was looking pretty good after three games. Miami took out Fairleigh Dickinson, Binghamton, and Coppin State in that trio. The wheels fell off after that, however, and the Hurricanes would hit a losing streak in the next seven outings versus Drake, Oklahoma State, VCU, Charleston Southern, Arkansas, Clemson, and Tennessee. Miami recovered—finally—with a win over Presbyterian on December 15, but then promptly lost their next two games versus Mount St. Mary’s and Boston College.

In the Boston College game on New Year’s Day, the Hurricanes came out of halftime holding a promising 41-29 edge. Miami didn’t stay on top much longer though: the second half was a 49-27 deficit and the Hurricanes ended up losing 78-68 in the end. Leading the team in scoring during the futile effort was Matthew Cleveland with 21 points, six rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Lynn Kidd added 14 points with eight rebounds and three assists. Topping the bench players was Paul Djobet with his 10 points, one rebound, and two steals in 20 minutes.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they’ve followed a similar trajectory so far this year in a 5-8 start. The first three games were all victories, as the Hokies dispatched Delaware State, South Carolina Upstate, and Winthrop. A string of six straight losses followed, however. Those defeats came courtesy of Penn State, Jacksonville, Michigan, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Pittsburgh in succession. The Hokies would recover on a couple of victories over North Carolina A&T and Navy, but they’ve since fallen to Saint Joseph’s and Duke in their last pair.

Matched up against Duke on New Year’s Eve, the Hokies came out of the locker room looking at a 37-27 deficit on the scoreboard. Virginia Tech limped through the second half on a 51-38 run and lost 88-65 in the end. Tops in scoring was Tobi Lawal with 19 points and five rebounds with four turnovers in 22 minutes. The only other Virginia Tech player in double-figures was Patrick Wessler, who came off the bench to provide 10 points and two rebounds with one steal. Ben Burnham added nine points and one assist off the bench, while Mylyjael Poteat put up six points with two rebounds and one assist in 17 minutes of work as the next-highest starter.

Virginia Tech vs Miami Prediction

I’ll stick with Virginia Tech I suppose. Frankly, there’s not a lot to get excited about in this game considering both teams are struggling and fans are already looking forward to next season. In any case, Virginia Tech will need a much better statistical effort than they got against a good Duke team in their last game. The Hokies shot well in that one (46 percent) but also got out-rebounded 35-22 and coughed up 12 turnovers for 18 Blue Devils points. Allowing 53.4 percent shooting on the other side didn’t help matters, either.

Virginia Tech has had some major issues putting up points this year. They’ve been below 66 points in nine of their 13 games so far. That said, the Hokies have also scored well in their wins; they’ve got 80 or more in four of those five games.

As for Miami, they shot just 39.7 percent from the field in their last game versus a decent Boston College team. The Hurricanes were outmuscled on the boards 40-33 and had 11 turnovers for 11 Eagles points. On defense, Miami gave up 46.4 percent shooting in the 10-point defeat. Miami has been below 69 points in three of their last five games, so I don’t see them posting a huge total here either. I’ll stay with the Hokies, but in reality, I’m probably not touching it.

Big Game for Boston College 

Boston College hasn’t had the best start to the season, but they are coming off a win, and they are going to try to build on that. A loss here would also not be a good sign for the rest of the season. Boston College faced off against Fairleigh Dickinson, and they scored 78 points and that was enough for the eight-point victory. Guard Donald Hand Jr had a strong game, putting up 29 points, 10 rebounds, and one assist. Chad Venning also was good, putting up 18 points, five rebounds, and one assist.

Boston College is averaging 71.3 points while their defense is giving up 71.7 points per game. The offense is ranked 280th in the league, while the defense is ranked 200th. The defense is going to need to find a way to get going early and really try to put pressure on the Miami defense.

Coaching Change for Miami

There was a big coaching change this week for Miami as Jim Larranaga decided to step down and Bill Courtney has been named the interim coach for the rest of the season. It’s not all that shocking for the coaching change with the way Miami has struggled to start the season. The last game for the Hurricanes came before Christmas against Mount St Mary’s, and they scored 74 points, but the defense gave up 78 points which led to the defeat. Guard Matthew Cleveland had a strong game, putting up 19 points and six rebounds. The Hurricanes shot 40.6 percent from the field but only 20 percent from the deep.

The Hurricanes on the season are averaging 78.7 points, while their defense is giving up 74 points per game. The offense is ranked 111th in the league, while the defense is ranked 256th. Nijel Pack has been the top player for Miami this season, averaging 13.9 points while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from behind the three-point line.

Why Miami Will Beat Boston College

• Boston College has lost nine of its last 10-day games against Conference opponents at Silvio O. Conte Forum.

Boston College vs Miami Prediction

I expect Miami is going to get one of those boosts that teams often see when they fire a coach, and they are going to have a big game here. This Miami team is still very talented, led by Nijel Pack, and he’s going to have a huge game here. Miami on the season is still averaging 78.7 points per game, and they are going to get the offense out to a fast start here.

Their defense hasn’t been great, but they are going to find some sort of success here against a Boston College offense that I don’t really trust, and that is going to be the difference here. Back Miami to cover the spread here.

Miami vs Iowa State Prediction 

This has the potential to be one of the best bowl games of the year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the big names in this game decide to opt out as we get closer to kick off. Miami had a fantastic season and their offense was elite, but they were tripped up by Syracuse to end the regular season. If Ward does play, you can expect Miami to score well into the 30’s, but if he doesn’t, it could be a struggle for the Hurricanes. Iowa State also had a very solid season, but they were blown out in the Big 12 Championship game. I really don’t like either defense in this matchup, but I am going to take the points with Iowa State. I think this game will mean more to the Cyclones and I just can’t back this Miami defense. I’m on Arkansas here. I think it’s really telling that the Hogs are favored on the road here, and while I’m sure the Coach Calipari rub will die off at some point, the fact is that Miami’s defense is hard to look past right now and the Hogs are a team that plays at a fast pace and are more than capable of doing damage against the Hurricanes here. Could it be a perfect buy low on Miami after the upset loss to Charleston Southern? Potentially, but I’m not putting down my hard earned money to find out. Give me Arkansas.
