Houston Texans Betting Preview

Houston kicked off the season on a pretty nice overall run, but their record over the last couple of months of the year did leave something to be desired. The Texans opened on a 6-2 stretch with losses to only Minnesota and Green Bay. Otherwise, it was wins over the Colts, Bears, Jaguars, Bills, Patriots and Colts again. Houston headed into the bye on a 2-3 stretch with wins over the Cowboys and Jaguars alongside losses to the Jets, Lions, and Titans. A 2-2 record would finish things off in the regular season, featuring wins over the Dolphins and Titans around losses to the Chiefs and Ravens for a 10-7 overall record this year.

The Texans took on the Chargers in their Wild Card game over the weekend. Houston fell behind early 6-0 but then stormed back with double-digit points in the final three quarters for a nice 32-12 blowout win. CJ Stroud threw for 282 yards with one TD and a pick, while Joe Mixon led the rushing attack on 25 carries for 106 yards and a score of his own. Nico Collins caught the touchdown pass among his seven receptions for 122 yards, and Xavier Hutchinson added a 34-yard grab to place second among the Texans receivers.

Kansas City Chiefs Betting Preview

Over on the Chiefs’ side, they put together yet another strong campaign this season, and they should serve as a formidable opponent as they attempt to continue their dominance. Kansas City won their first nine games, taking out Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Tampa Bay, and Denver before taking their first loss in Week 11 versus the Bills. The Chiefs would recover on another win streak, beating the Panthers, Raiders, Chargers, Browns, Texans, and Steelers before another loss to the Broncos which finished off the season at 15-2 overall in the record column.

In their (essentially meaningless) Week 18 game versus the Broncos, the Chiefs played mostly reserves for the bulk of the game—and it showed. Kansas City was down 24-0 by halftime and never scored in a 38-0 blowout defeat. QB Carson Wentz threw for just 98 yards, and Carson Steele led the rushers with his eight carries for 25 yards. Nikko Remigio was the leading Chiefs receiver on two catches for 48 yards. Peyton Hendershot added two catches as well, totaling 25 yards in the shutout defeat.

Chiefs vs Texans Prediction

I’m going to take a stab at the Texans. We should have a pretty great game regardless, though. Houston looked excellent (after a slow start) versus a talented Chargers team last weekend, eventually notching a nice 429 yards of offense (261 passing) with 20 first downs. On defense, the Texans held LA to 15 first downs and 261 yards (211 passing) on the other side. The 32 points were an encouraging total; Houston had been below 28 points in six straight games prior to that victory.

As for the Chiefs, we can pretty much throw out that loss to the Broncos back on January 5, as it didn’t have much of an effect on anything outside of getting Denver into the playoffs. That said, Kansas City has been below 22 points in four of the last six games now which puts some additional strain on their (admittedly capable) defense.

The last time these teams met up back on December 21 (also at Arrowhead), the Chiefs powered out a 27-19 victory. Both teams scored in every quarter, with Kansas City edging the Texans in most categories. Houston had a couple of turnovers—both picks—and gave the Chiefs three first downs via penalties. The Texans need to play a complete game on both sides and avoid making those crucial mistakes this time. That said, coming off the nice win over the Chargers I think Houston is in good shape to power out a cover here. It’ll be a fun one to watch at any rate.

You can make a case for the Texans, as it’s not often you get a home dog in the NFL playoffs. However, there’s a reason this line is what it is. The Texans ended the season with losses in five of their last nine games, and the offense has struggled mightily due to injuries. We watched the Texans on Christmas score two points against the Ravens. The Texans have scored 20 or fewer points in four of their last nine games. That’s just not going to be good enough against a Chargers team that can score but also has the best-scoring defense in the league. This just isn’t a great matchup for the Texans, given their injury situation and the struggling offense overall.

The Chargers are also 12-5 ATS on the season. I’ll lay the small chalk with the Chargers.

Tennessee Titans Betting Preview

The Tennessee Titans are 3-13 this year after they lost to Jacksonville by a score of 20-13 in their last game. Tennessee trailed 13-0 in the first half, but they did cut the deficit to 13-10 before Jacksonville was able to pull away. The Titans did drive the ball down late but was stopped just short of the end zone. The Titans outgained Jacksonville by a total of 337-295, lost the turnover battle 1-0, and went 7-14 on third down in the game. Mason Rudolph threw for 193 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, while Tyjae Spears rushed for 95 yards on 20 carries in the loss.

Prior to that game, the Titans lost to Indianapolis by a score of 38-30 and Cincinnati by a score of 37-27. Tennessee has lost five games in a row and they are last in the AFC South standings, one game behind Jacksonville. The Tennessee offense has scored 18.6 points per game with 193.0 passing yards and 110.6 rushing yards per game, while the defense has allowed 27.3 points per game this season. Mason Rudolph has completed 63.5% of his passes for 1,460 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions, while Calvin Ridley has caught 61 passes for 941 yards and four scores this year. There are reports stating that the Titans are going to also play Will Levis under center, so look for both quarterbacks to play here. 

Houston Texans Betting Preview

The Houston Texans are 9-7 this season after they lost to Baltimore by a score of 31-2 in their last game. Houston was able to get a safety in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 10-2, but they couldn’t score any offensive points in the blowout loss. The Texans were outgained by a total of 432-211, lost the turnover battle 1-0, and went 4-15 on third down in the game. CJ Stroud threw for 185 yards and one interception, while Nico Collins caught three passes for 59 yards in the game. 

Prior to that loss, the Texans lost to Kansas City by a score of 27-19 but did beat Miami by a score of 20-12 before that. Houston has lost three of their last five games and five of their last eight, but they have already clinched the AFC South. The Houston offense has scored 21.8 points per game with 209.9 passing yards and 106.4 rushing yards per game, while the defense has allowed 22.4 points per game this season. CJ Stroud has completed 62.7% of his passes for 3,677 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, while Joe Mixon has rushed for 993 yards and 11 scores this year. It sounds like the starters will play at least some snaps, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see them only play one quarter or one half.

Jacksonville is dealing with an injury to Lawrence, but if he is able to play, I think the Jags could pull off an upset. I don’t think Lawrence will end up playing, so give me the Texans here.

Having stated that, how has Stroud performed from a statistical perspective in 2024? Let’s review C.J. Stroud’s relevant key player game data from the 2024 NFL regular season to answer that question.

In the 11 games that C.J. Stroud has played for the Houston Texans in the 2024 NFL regular season, Stroud compiled 2,628 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns, and 174 rushing yards.

More recently, in the Houston Texans 23-20 win over the Buffalo Bills last month, C.J. Stroud amassed 331 passing yards, one passing touchdown, and 27 rushing yards.

Examining the data just presented more closely, C.J. Stroud compiled 20.9 DraftKings points in the Houston Texans victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Additionally, I like C.J. Stroud from a general matchup perspective. Why? The Tennessee Titans have had issues containing opposing quarterbacks this season. Let me be more specific. Through 11 games played in the 2024 NFL regular season, the Tennessee Titans are ranked a rather low 23rd in total Draftkings points allowed a game (17.1) to the quarterback position. Keep in mind that the NFL has 32 teams in the entire league. Having stated that, being ranked 23rd in any defensive category is clearly not good.

In summary, I think quarterback C.J.  Stroud is the most likely player to post the most Draftkings points in Sunday afternoon’s NFL game. For that specific reason, I am backing Houston Texans starting quarterback C.J. Stroud at the captain position for this one game Draftkings NFL Showdown slate.

In addition to C.J. Stroud, running back Joe Mixon has been a key contributor to the Houston Texans offense in 2024. Let’s review Mixon’s recent statistical player data to better shed light on my previous statement.

In the eight games that Joe Mixon has played for the Houston Texans in the 2024 NFL regular season, Mixon has compiled 764 rushing yards, ten rushing touchdowns, 18 receptions, 203 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown.

I fully expect Joe Mixon to continue his outstanding play versus a vulnerable Tennessee Titans defense on Sunday afternoon.

The Tennessee Titans come into this one looking to bounce back from a 23-13 loss at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings to fall to 2-8 on the year. After this game, Tennessee will head back on the road again for a date with the Washington Commanders.

The Houston Texans come into this one looking to build on their 34-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys last time out to improve to 7-4 on the year. After this game, Houston will head back on the road for another division game against the Jaguars.

Stroud has thrown for 2,628 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions on 63.4% passing while Joe Mixon has a team-high 764 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns and Cam Akers has 147 rushing yards as well on the year. Nico Collins has 36 receptions for 621 yards and 3 touchdowns while Stefon Diggs has a team-high 42 grabs for 415 yards and 3 TDs as well but appears to be out for the rest of the year. Tank Dell has 448 receiving yards with 2 TDs and Dalton Schultz has 343 receiving yards while five Texans have 100+ receiving yards. On defense, Jalen Pitre has a team-high 64 total tackles including 43 solo tackles. Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter each have a team-high 7.5 sacks. Houston Texans vs Tennessee Titans Prediction

I’m on the Texans here. I was leaning towards the under as well, but I just can’t expect the Titans to keep this one within reach with inflated defensive numbers as a team and the fact that the Texans have found their ground game in a big way in recent weeks. Tennessee just doesn’t have what it takes to hang with the Texans and I expect Houston to win this one by a fair margin. Give me Houston.

In summary, I fully expect talented Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell to continue his outstanding play versus a vulnerable Dallas Cowboys secondary on Monday night.

The Dallas Cowboys are a complete mess, as they’ve lost 4 straight games and have yet to win at home. With Rush at quarterback, the Cowboys offense is even less reliable and coming off a contest where they scored just 6 points. With that said, the Texans are banged up on the offensive side of the ball and the defense remains hit or miss. The Texans also just lost a home game despite the defense coming away with five interceptions. The Texans have been a favorite of 7 or more points twice since December 2019 and both of those games were outright losses. I’d grab the points with the Cowboys at home if forced to pick.

CJ Stroud has completed 63.5% of his passes for 2,139 yards, 11 touchdowns, and four interceptions, while Tank Dell has caught 30 passes for 355 yards and two scores. 

Detroit Lions Betting Preview

The Detroit Lions are 7-1 this season after they defeated Green Bay by a score of 24-14 last week. Detroit trailed 3-0 after the first quarter, but they scored the next 24 points to pull away for the win. The Lions were outgained by a total of 411-261, won the turnover battle 1-0, and went 4-12 on third down in the win. Jared Goff threw for 145 yards and one touchdown, while Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 65 yards and one score. 

Prior to that game, the Lions won five games against Tennessee, Minnesota, Dallas, Seattle, and Arizona. The Detroit offense has scored 32.3 points per game with 217 passing yards and 152.6 rushing yards per game, while the defense has allowed 18.5 points per game this season. The Texans will definitely be without Diggs for this game, and Collins may or may not be activated from IR, so the wide receiver position will be thin once again. The Lions’ defense does have some question marks, but their offense is fantastic on the ground and through the air. I do think Houston will be able to move the ball in this matchup, but I am not going against this Lions team. Take Detroit on the road.
