Kansas had a great run going into the middle of January, but they’ve been on quite a choppy run amid some tough matchups since then. The Jayhawks opened on a 12-3 run, falling to only Creighton, Missouri, and West Virginia in that time. The wins otherwise came versus Howard, North Carolina, Michigan State, Oakland, UNC Wilmington, Duke, Furman, NC State, Brown, UCF, Arizona State, and Cincinnati. Since then Kansas has gone just 5-5 over their last 10 outings. The losses were versus Iowa State, Houston, Baylor, Kansas State, and Utah. Otherwise, it was wins over Kansas State, TCU, UCF, Iowa State, and Colorado in that time. That gives the Jayhawks a 17-8 overall record through the first 25 games of the season.

In the Utah game on Saturday, the Jayhawks kicked off the first half with a two-point deficit. Kansas didn’t end up getting any closer than that, falling further behind on a 35-30 run and taking the eventual loss 74-67. Zeke Mayo led the team in the losing effort with his 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Dajuan Harris added 14 points with four rebounds and four assists, while Hunter Dickinson had 12 points with seven rebounds, four blocks, and three assists. Leading the team off the bench was Flory Bidunga with eight points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 20 minutes on the floor.

BYU Cougars Betting Preview

Over on the BYU side, they had a pretty rough run going last month but overall they’ve been pretty solid in the record column. The Cougars kicked things off on a 10-2 run with losses to Ole Miss and Providence amid wins otherwise versus Central Arkansas, UC Riverside, Queens U, Idaho, MS Valley State, NC State, Fresno State, Wyoming, Florida A&M, and Arizona State. A 1-4 run came next with a lone win over Oklahoma State amid losses to Houston, Texas Tech, TCU, and Utah. Since then it’s been a 6-2 stretch for BYU. The losses in that time were to Arizona and Cincinnati in consecutive games. Aside from that pair it was wins over Colorado, Cincinnati, Baylor, UCF, West Virginia, and Kansas State in that time. Overall through 25 games so far, BYU is currently 17-8 in the record books as well.

Matched up against Kansas State on Saturday, the Cougars were up 40-22 at the break. BYU kept the pace pretty well from there on a 43-40 deficit and took the win at the end 80-65. Richie Saunders led the way with his 17 points, 14 rebounds, two steals, and two assists for a double-double. Dallin Hal led the bench players with 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Fousseyni Traore had 11 points and four rebounds off the bench. Keba Keita chipped in nine points with 11 rebounds and five blocs as well.

I’m going to take a stab at BYU here. The Cougars are coming off a nice win over a potentially dangerous Kansas State team, shooting 49.1 percent from the field with a 41-31 rebounding edge and 18 team assists. BYU did have 12 turnovers so it wasn’t a perfect game, but an important victory all the same. The Cougars have now scored a combined 153 points in consecutive wins, holding opponents below 70 points in both games as well.

As for Kansas, they held Utah to just 36.5 percent shooting in their latest game but still managed to lose, thanks mostly to 12 turnovers which turned into 22 Utes points. The Jayhawks have been on a wildly inconsistent run lately, and this will be another tricky road matchup. I’m not confident enough in Kansas these days to take them on a cover/win.

Kansas it the more talented team and is going to get the nod from oddsmakers because of it, but the Jayhawks are beatable this season and have lost three of their last four road games. The Jon M. Huntsman Center is never an easy place to play, and the Utah Utes have seen 12 of their 13 wins come at home this season. Utah is still a physical team defensively, and we’ve seen recent upsets over BYU and TCU. It’s not going to always be pretty, but Utah is top-50 in defensive field goal percentage. Hunter Dickinson is the leading scorer, but Zeke Mayo is the most important player on the team, and he’s averaging 16.5 points while shooting 52.7 percent from the field.

What an Awul Season for Colorado

It has been nothing but an awful season for Colorado, and they just keep losing games. Colorado, in the last game, actually was a bit competitive about Houston, but they still only scored 59 points, and that led to the defeat. Colorado shot 41.3 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from behind the three-point line. Two games ago against Utah, it was the same story with the offense, and they ended up losing 72-59. 

Colorado comes into this game. What a 9-14 record overall, and they have gone 8-15 against the spread. Colorado is averaging 70.7 points, while their defense is giving up 72 points per game. The offense is ranked 271st in the league, while the defense is ranked 198th in the league. Colorado sits with a 9-14 record overall, and they have gone. Julian Hammond is averaging 13.7 points while shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Kansas vs Colorado Prediction

This total is too high. Kansas is averaging 76.7 points but it’s actually going to be their defense that is the difference in this game. Colorado’s offense has been a major problem heading into this game, and they are going to really struggle to get the offense going here. In each of the last three games, Colorado has scored under 60 points and they are going to really have some major issues here. Kansas State comes into this game with an 11-11 record overall and they have gone 12-10 against the spread. Kansas State is averaging 73.5 points while their defense is giving up 70 points per game. The offense is ranked 206th in the league while the defense is ranked 128th in the league. David N’Guessan is averaging 12.6 points while shooting 64.2 percent from the field and 31.6 percent from behind the three-point line.

Iowa State Cyclones Betting Preview

The Cyclones have been one of the more consistent teams in the country so far this year, with relatively few losses piling up in the record column. Iowa State opened with wins over Mississippi Valley State, Kansas City, and IUPUI, then took their first defeat of the season courtesy of Auburn. Wins versus Dayton, Colorado, Marquette, Jackson State, Iowa, Omaha, Morgan State, Colorado, Baylor, Utah, Texas Tech, and Kansas came in the next month and a half, though. Over the next four games Iowa State hit a shaky 2-2 run with losses to West Virginia and Arizona sandwiched around wins versus UCF and Arizona State. The result through the first 20 games of the season was a 17-3 overall record for Iowa State.

In their Saturday showdown with Kansas State, the Cyclones got off to a 37-35 deficit in the first half. Iowa State slumped even further from there in a rough showing 43-26 and lost 80-61 in something of a shocker outcome. Leading the team in scoring was Tamin Lipsey with 20 points, three assists, and one rebound. Curtis Jones added 14 points with six rebounds, and Joshua Jefferson had 13 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 27 minutes.

Over on the Kansas side, they’ve had a couple of spotty runs in the books so far this year, but overall they’re doing quite well record-wise also. The Jayhawks beat Howard, North Carolina, Michigan State, Oakland, UNC Wilmington, Duke, and Furman out of the gate, then fell to Creighton and Missouri in successive games. A 5-2 run came next with losses to West Virginia and Iowa State amid wins over NC State, Brown, UCF, Arizona State and Cincinnati came next, then a 3-1 stretch over the next four. The lone loss in that time was versus Houston. Otherwise, it was wins over Kansas State, TCU, and UCF for a 15-5 overall run through 20 games.

Matched up against Baylor on Saturday, the Jayhawks were looking good initially on a 40-21 advantage by the break. Kansas was blitzed 60-30 in the second half however, and ended up taking a road loss 81-70 in the end. Hunter Dickinson led the team on his 20 points with five rebounds and one steal. Dajuan Harris put up 12 points with eight assists, two steals, and two rebounds, while Rylan Griffen chipped in with 11 points, two rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes of work off the bench.

Why the Kansas Jayhawks will win

Kansas vs Iowa State Prediction

I’ll lean toward Kansas. With both teams recording losses on Saturday however, some of the luster has worn off this matchup. On Saturday the Jayhawks had Baylor dead to rights by the second half but eventually got outplayed. Kansas was outmuscled on the boards 40-27 and coughed up 14 turnovers for 24 Bears points. Iowa State had turnover troubles in their loss as well (18 for 18 K-State points) and lost the rebounding battle 39-29. Both teams could use a bounce-back showing on Monday.

The last time these teams met up was back on January 15 in a 74-57 home victory for Iowa State. Both teams shot exactly 40.7 percent from the field (24-of-59), however, the Cyclones did better from the 3-point range (61.5 percent on 8-of-13) and the line (18-of-25 for 72 percent). Iowa State’s 43-33 rebounding edge helped quite a bit as well. It was a sloppy game overall, with Kansas contributing 17 of the 30 total turnovers for 23 Cyclones points. If Kansas can get their act together and control the mistakes in this home rematch, I think the Jayhawks can eke into a cover. Should be an interesting matchup.

Norchad Omier leads Baylor in scoring and rebounding, averaging a double-double per game with 15.4 PPG and 10.2 RPG while Robert Wright III has 11.9 PPG with a team-high 4.7 APG to lead Baylor in the assist department up to this point in the season. Jeremy Roach has chipped in 11.9 PPG with 3.5 APG while VJ Edgecombe has 14.2 PPG with 5.4 RPG along with 3.2 APG and 2.4 SPG. Jayden Nunn’s added 10 PPG to cap off the group of double-digit scorers for Baylor up to this point in the year. As a team, Baylor is averaging 79.9 PPG on 46% shooting from the field, 36.5% from behind the arc and 72.3% from the foul line so far this season.

Baylor vs Kansas Prediction

I’m on Kansas and the points here. I’m just not a fan of this Baylor team right now, as something just feels off as to why they can’t get over the hump against the good teams. I think part of it is youth, but in this matchup, Baylor is just really undersized. I’ll give Omier a ton of credit, averaging a double-double per game at 6’7”, but I don’t see anyone that can match the size of Hunter Dickinson and I think he’s going to be a problem inside for Baylor in this game. In this game, the offense is going to need to be good, but the defense is also going to need to step up in a big way. On the road, getting out to a fast start is going to be key.
