New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview

Record-wise the Lobos have done a great job this year, with only a few scattered losses in the books. New Mexico went 7-3 over their first 10 outings with losses to St. John’s, Arizona State, and New Mexico State among wins over Nicholls, UCLA, Texas A&M-CC, Grambling, Texas Southern, USC, and San Jose State. After a win streak over Western New Mexico, VCU, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Wyoming, and San Diego State, the Lobos fell versus San Jose State. Since then it’s been another win streak as New Mexico has dispatched Boise State, Fresno State, UNLV, Utah State, Colorado State, Air Force, Wyoming, and Utah State. That gives the Lobos a 22-4 overall record through their first 26 outings of the season.

In the Utah State matchup on Sunday, the Lobos came out of the locker room with a 42-36 deficit. New Mexico came alive in the second half on a 46-37 run though, eventually taking the win 82-79. Leading the team in scoring along the way was Tru Washington with 25 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Donovan Dent added 23 points with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Nelly Junior Joseph had 15 points with five rebounds, one assist, and one steal, while Filip Borovicanin added 11 points with five boards and two assists.

Boise State Broncos Betting Preview

Over on the Boise State side, they had a choppy run going last month but otherwise, they’ve done quite well themselves. The Broncos went 6-3 in their first nine with losses to San Francisco, Boston College, and Washington State among wins over Oakland, Corban College, Clemson, Hampton, South Dakota State, and Utah Tech. Boise State beat Saint Mary’s, Texas Southern, Air Force, San Jose State, and Wyoming in the next five, then hit a 2-4 run with wins over only UNLV and Wyoming. The losses otherwise in that time came versus San Diego State, Utah State, New Mexico, and Colorado State. After wins versus Nevada, Fresno State, UNLV, and San Jose State, the Broncos took another loss to San Diego State. In total that gives Boise State a 17-8 overall record so far through 25 games this year.

Matched up against San Diego State in their Saturday outing, the Broncos were in trouble at the break on a 28-18 deficit. Boise State didn’t get any closer after a 36-29 second half and took the loss at the end 64-47. Tyson Degenhart was the team’s only double-digit scorer, notching 17 points with 12 boards and one assist. Alvaro Cardenas added eight points and three assists in 39 minutes, while Pearson Carmichael put up seven points off the bench.

Boise State vs New Mexico Prediction

I’m going to lean toward the Lobos. New Mexico got off to something of a slow start in their latest win over Utah State, but everything worked out in the end. The Lobos shot 46.2 percent from the field with a 35-27 rebounding advantage, but it was a sloppy game overall. New Mexico committed 14 of the 28 total turnovers, which turned into 19 Utah State points. That makes eight straight wins for the Lobos now, with 71 or more points scored in each game.

New Mexico kicked off this current win streak with an 84-65 victory over Boise State in a home matchup back on January 17. The Lobos shot a nice 54.4 percent from the field in that one with 20 points off 17 Broncos turnovers. Boise State should play better in the home rematch (with fewer mistakes), but I still like New Mexico to keep their current run going.

Utah State Recap

The Utah State Aggies come into this game looking to add on to their 93-85 win over Colorado State last time out to improve to 22-3 on the year. After this game, Utah State will head home for a game against San Jose State.

The New Mexico Lobos come into add on to their 71-67 win over Wyoming last time out to improve to 21-4 on the year. After this game, New Mexico will head on the road for a matchup against the Boise State Broncos.

Donovan Dent leads the Lobos in scoring and assists with 19.6 PPG and 6.5 APG along with 2.6 RPG while Nelly Junior Joseph has 13.6 PPG with a team-high 10.9 RPG to lead the Lobos in rebounding so far this season. Mustapha Amzil has 12.1 PPG with 5.5 RPG and Tru Washington has 11.1 PPG with 3.9 RPG to cap off the scoring in double figures for New Mexico up to this point in the year. CJ Noland has 8.8 PPG with 2.8 RPG while Filip Borovicanin has 5.5 PPG with 4.6 RPG. I’m with New Mexico here. I get the case to be made for Utah State as it’s not often that you’re going to get points like this with a team that’s 22-3 this season. That being said, Utah State has faced a fairly soft road schedule in Mountain West conference play, and the Pit, year after year, for good reason, is heralded as one of the toughest road environments, not just in the Mountain West, but in the entire country. I think that New Mexico comes out with a point to prove here and I think the Lobos get the win and cover at home. I’ll lay the points with New Mexico here.

Wyoming Cowboys Betting Preview

Wyoming has had a couple of pretty good runs so far this year. Overall, however, the Cowboys have struggled in the record column. After a 5-1 start that included wins over Concordia-St. Paul, Tennessee, State, Utah Tech, SE Louisiana, and Tulane among a lone loss to Texas Tech, Wyoming hit a losing streak versus Loyola Marymount, Utah State, South Dakota, and BYU. A 4-1 run came next with a loss to Boise State alongside wins over Bellarmine, Cal State Fullerton, Nevada, and Air Force. Since then it’s been a rough 2-7 run for the Cowboys. The wins in that time were over UNLV and Fresno State. Otherwise, it was losses to New Mexico, Boise State, Colorado State, San Jose State, San Diego State, Utah State, and UNLV. That gives Wyoming an 11-13 overall record through their first 24 games so far this year.

In the UNLV game on Saturday, the Cowboys opened the game with a 30-23 deficit. Wyoming didn’t end up getting any closer on a 38-34 deficit from there and took the loss 68-57. Leading the team in scoring was Obi Agbim with 14 points, two rebounds, and three assists. Cole Henry added 10 points with six assists and three rebounds in 25 minutes. Tops in scoring off the bench was Jordan Nesbitt, who chipped in seven points and six boards in 33 minutes.

New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview

Over on the New Mexico side, they came into the year on a relatively choppy run but they’ve been doing great since mid-December. The Lobos lost three of their first 10 games against St. John’s, Arizona State, and New Mexico State, beating Nicholls, UCLA, Texas A&M-CC, Grambling, Texas Southern, USC, and San Jose State otherwise during that time. New Mexico has just one loss since then versus San Jose State on January 14. Otherwise, it’s been wins over Western New Mexico, VCU, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Wyoming, San Diego State, Boise State, Fresno State, UNLV, Utah State, Colorado State, and Air Force since then, giving the Lobos a 20-4 overall run through 24 games during this current campaign.

Matched up against Air Force on Saturday, the Lobos entered the locker room holding a 34-24 edge. New Mexico got even better from there on a 54-29 run and took the victory in the end. 88-53. Leading the team in scoring was Donovan Dent with 25 points, six assists, and two rebounds. Nelly Junior Joseph hauled in a whopping 21 rebounds with his 14 points for a double-double, and Tru Washington had 16 points with five rebounds and four steals.

Why the New Mexico Lobos will win

New Mexico vs Wyoming Prediction

I’ll lean toward New Mexico. The Lobos are on a great run these days. They had very little trouble versus a struggling Air Force team in their last game, hitting 47.1 percent from the field with a 48-34 rebounding edge and 21 points off 18 Falcons turnovers. New Mexico gave up just 31.5 percent shooting on the other side and had only seven turnovers themselves in the blowout victory. During this current six-game win streak, the Lobos have 75 or more points in each game and 82 or more in five of them.

These teams saw each other last back on January 7 in a 61-53 road win for the Lobos. New Mexico didn’t play all that well in that one, posting just 18 points in the first half. The Lobos did well on the boards (44) and from the line (18-of-22 for 81.8 percent) but neither team shot well (both less than 34 percent). New Mexico could use a much more convincing effort here in the home rematch, and I think they’ll get it.

This is a team that likes to push the pace, especially at home, if they get out to a fast start, and with the way The Pit gets going, they are hard to beat.

Colorado State is Hot

Colorado State is hot heading into this game and they have won four games in a row. Two games ago against Fresno State, they won 69-64 and in the last game against Air Force, they were able to secure the 79-58. In the last game against Air Force, the defense gave up only 58 points and that was enough for the victory. In the second half they outscored Air Force 41-21 and that was enough for the victory. Nique Clifford had a strong game putting up 22 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists. 

Colorado State comes into this game with a 14-7 record overall and they have gone 10-11 against the spread. The Rams are averaging 74.1 points while their defense is giving up 67.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 19th in the league while the defense is ranked 201st. They are shooting 46.91 percent from the field which is 76th in the league. Nique Clifford has been the top player this season this season averaging 17.7 points while shooting 50 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from behind the three-point line. 

New Mexico vs Colorado State Prediction

Colorado State has been playing really well heading into this game winning four games in a row, and although I don’t think they win this game, they are going to keep this game close. Each of the last two games the defense for Colorado State has really stepped up and they are going to step up in a big way again here. Fresno State finally got their first conference win last time out, but they are shooting just 40.7% from the field this year. The Bulldogs are allowing over 81 points against per game and defense has been a big concern in their last few road games. The Broncos have been very good on both ends of the court this season and I think they can get the win in this matchup, so I will take the points with Boise State here.

Fresno State Has Problems

Fresno State has problems heading into this game and overall they have won only four games this season. In the last game against UNLV, the offense was good, scoring 77 points, but the defense gave up 87 points, and that led to the defeat. Mykell Robinson had a strong game putting up 18 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. There were four differen players that put up at least 13 points. Two games ago against California Baptist, the offense scored 69 points but the defense gave up 86 points. The defense gave up 50 points in the second half and that led to the defeat. 

Fresno State is averaging 72.3 points while their defense is giving up 80.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 261st in the league while the defense is ranked 342nd in the league. Amar Augillard has been the top player for Fresno State averaging 13.3 points while shooting 37.3 percent from the field and 24.3 percent from behind the three-point line. Shane Douma Sanchez has been shut down for the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

VCU Rams Betting Preview

The Rams’ year kicked off on a 4-0 run before a pair of losses to Seton Hall and Nevada. It’s been five straight wins for VCU since then, over Miami, Elizabeth City State, Georgia Southern, Pennsylvania and Colorado State in succession.

On Saturday versus Colorado State, VCU held a one-point lead by halftime. After a 43-36 run in the second, VCU powered out the win 76-68. Tops in scoring was Joe Bamisile with 25 points, and Max Shulga had 20 points with 10 boards.

New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview

Over on the New Mexico side, they beat Nicholls, UCLA, Texas A&M-CC, Grambling and Texas Southern in their first six games. The Lobos are 3-2 since then with wins over USC, San Jose State and Western New Mexico.

In the Western New Mexico game last weekend, the Lobos didn’t have much trouble. New Mexico bombed in 60 points in the first half and 62 more in the second for a 122-70 blowout victory. Leading team scorer Jovan Milicevic posted 21 bench points with six rebounds.

I’ll stay with New Mexico. The Lobos are fresh off an easy win over Western New Mexico, hitting a blistering 60.3 percent from the field with 41 rebounds. New Mexico has been rolling on the scoreboards lately. They’ve posted 80 or more points in seven straight games. Trouble is, the Lobos are also giving up some pretty hefty totals to solid offenses.

As for VCU, they shot 43.9 percent from the field with 32 rebounds in their win over Colorado State, but managed just 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the line. The Rams have scored 76 or more points in four of their last five games (all wins), so they’re posting some big totals as well these days. I like this one to be a hefty total and a competitive matchup, with New Mexico eking out a home cover/win.

USC’s Offense Needs to Be Better

USC’s offense was embarrassing against the Saint Mary’s Gaels and they scored only 36 points on the way to the defeat. In the second half the offense only scored 15 points and that is embarrassing. As a team, they shot only 26 percent from the field and zero percent from behind the three-point line. They were 0-12 from deep. Josh Cohen was the only player to score in double figures and he had 12 points. Two games ago against Grambling, they scored 80 points and the offense needs to be better. USC on the season is averaging 73.4 points while their defense is giving up 70.6 points per game. The offense is ranked 239th in the league while the defense is ranked 174th. 

New Mexico Fell Just Short

New Mexico played pretty well on Thursday against Arizona State, but the defense didn’t make enough stops late. They scored 45 points in the second half, but the defense gave up 51 points and that led to the defeat. Guard Donovan Dent did have a strong game for New Mexico, putting up 30 points, seven assists, and one rebound. New Mexico, on the season, is averaging 85 points while the defense is giving up 75 points per game. The offense is ranked 36th in the league while the defense is ranked 268th. In this game, New Mexico has a chance to have a good defensive team, and they are going to need the defense to step up in a big way here.

USC’s offense really struggled in the last game, and they are going to have some major issues getting the offense going again. New Mexico Wants to Push the Pace

New Mexico wants to push the pace and it’s going to be important the offense is good in this game. New Mexico faced off against Nicholls in the first game and they scored 91 points on the way to the seven point victory. At halftime they were up 48-43 and they didn’t take their foot off the gas. There were five different layers that put at least 10 points. 

Nelly Junior Joseph was the top plate for New Mexico putting up 28 points, 16 rebounds, and two assists. Mustapha Amzil also was good putting up 13 points, 13 rebounds, and two assists. There were eight different players that played 10 minutes, and there is some questions about the depth on the end of the bench. 

UCLA Dominated First Game

UCLA in the first game faced off against Rider and the offense scored 85 points while the defense gave up 50 points and that led to the victory. At half time they were up 41-23 and they ended up cruising to the victory. The offense was good, but the defense really stepped up, and the defense is going to need to step up here. 

Tyler Bilodeau had a strong game putting up 18 points and six rebounds. There were four different players that put up at least 12 points. Guard Dylan Edwards had a strong game putting up 14 points, six assists, and one rebound. In this game UCLA wants to find success, the defense is going to need to be good.

This game is going to come down to the UCLA defense. We all know that UCLA is going to run up the score, the question is will their defense make enough stops on New Mexico. I believe they will be. New Mexico Lobos Betting Preview

The Lobos hit the skids out of the gate this year, losing to Montana State, Arizona, Auburn and Fresno State in their first quartet. New Mexico rebounded with wins over New Mexico State, Air Force and Utah State before another loss to Colorado State.

Matched up against Wyoming, the Lobos were up 45-35 going into the fourth quarter but eventually lost a tough one 49-45 after giving up a couple of unanswered TDs. Devon Dampier threw for 164 yards, one TD and a pick while also leading the rush on 207 yards and three scores.

San Diego State Aztecs Betting Preview

Over on the San Diego State side, they beat Texas A&M-Commerce before losses to Oregon State, California and Central Michigan in their first four. The Aztecs beat Hawaii and Wyoming before another loss to Washington State on October 26.

Last Friday versus Boise State, the Aztecs had their proverbial hands full. San Diego State was drilled 35-10 in the first half and eventually limped to a 56-24 blowout loss. On the other side the Aztecs gave up 541 yards (322 passing) and a whopping 34 first downs as they couldn’t get off the field. New Mexico should be much closer to San Diego State’s wheelhouse, though.

Speaking of the Lobos, in their weekend matchup they lost a tough one with a late breakdown. New Mexico had a couple of turnovers, seven penalties and just 164 pass yards. The good news is that the running game was great on 412 yards; the bad news is that the Lobos gave up 605 yards total (262 rushing) on the other side.
