Oregon Finally Back on the Right Track

Oregon had lost five games in a row before winning the last game against the Northwestern Wildcats. Oregon’s offense was sure impressive, scoring 81 points, and that was enough for the six-point victory. At halftime, Oregon was up 39-25, and in the second half, they held on for the win. Jackson Shelsted put up 26 points, four assists, and one rebound. There were three different players that put up at least 14 points. Two games ago against Michigan State, the defense was awful, giving up 86 points and that led to the defeat. 

Oregon overall sits with a 17-8 record overall, and they have gone 10-15 against the spread. The over has hit in 15 of the 25 games so far this season. Oregon is averaging 76.5 points, while their defense is giving up 72.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 114th, while the defense is ranked 196th. Jackson Shelstad has been the top player, averaging 13.4 points while shooting 45.2 percent from the field. 

Rutgers Has Been A Disappointment

Rutgers has been a major disappointment this season and they just keep losing games. Two games ago against Maryland, Rutgers lost 90-81 and in the last game against Iowa, they ended up losing 84-73. In the second half Rutgers was outscored 51-31 and that led to the defeat. Even though Rutgers lost they used a balanced offensive attack to find the offensive success. Ace Bailey had a strong game putting up 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Give me Oregon here. I really don’t trust Oregon, honestly, but I really don’t trust Rutgers more. This Rutgers defense has refused to play a lick of defense the last month, and their lack of any sort of defense is going to be the difference here. I’m leaning towards Rutgers and the points here. Rutgers can be a tough team at the Jersey Mike’s Arena, and Illinois has shown signs of vulnerability in some of their recent games. I also think that the Illini were slightly lucky to pull away from Ohio State the way that they did as Ohio State was leading with less than 8 minutes to go before Illinois flipped the switch. I think that Rutgers may end up being a two-man show with Harper and Bailey, but this Rutgers team has been able to keep themselves in a lot of games that maybe you wouldn’t expect them to be able to keep close. I’ll take a shot on Rutgers with the points in this one.

Michigan Wolverines Betting Preview

Michigan has racked up a handful of losses so far this year, but overall they’ve been quite the consistent team. The Wolverines have just one instance of consecutive losses this season. In their first nine outings, Michigan went a nice 8-1 with a lone loss to Wake Forest. Otherwise it was wins over Cleveland State, TCU, Miami Ohio, Tarleton State, Virginia Tech, Xavier, Wisconsin and Iowa. The next two were both losses to Arkansans and Oklahoma, but Michigan quickly found their footing afterward. The Wolverines took out Fort Wayne, Western Kentucky, USC, UCLA and Washington in the next five games. Since then it’s been a spotty 2-2 run though. Michigan has losses to Minnesota and Purdue in that time, alongside wins over Northwestern and Penn State otherwise. That gives the Wolverines a 15-5 record this year.

In the Penn State matchup back on Monday, Michigan posted a 35-35 result in the first half. The Wolverines came back for a 41-37 run the rest of the way, ultimately powering out a 76-72 victory in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Tre Donaldson with 21 points, seven assists, four steals and three rebounds. Danny Wolf added 11 points with nine rebounds and two blocks, and Nimari Burnett chipped in with 10 points, three boards and four assists.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights Betting Preview

Over on the Rutgers’ side, they’ve had a few pretty good runs so far this season. They’ve also had a few pretty bad runs this season however, giving the Knights a record that’s barely above the .500 mark. Rutgers opened on a 5-1 stretch, losing to Kennesaw State with wins otherwise versus Wagner, Saint Peter’s, Monmouth, Merrimack and Notre Dame. A 3-4 run came next with wins over Penn State, Seton Hall and Columbia alongside losses to Alabama, Texas A&M, Ohio State and Princeton. Three more losses ensued versus Indiana, Wisconsin and Purdue, then a 3-2 stretch. Those wins were over UCLA, Nebraska and Northwestern. Otherwise it was losses to Penn State and Michigan, giving the Scarlet Knights an 11-10 overall run so far.

Matched up against Northwestern in their Wednesday game, the Knights came out of the break with a 43-35 edge. Rutgers was able to fend off the opposition on a 37-36 run the rest of the way, ultimately taking a victory 79-72 in the end. Ace Bailey led the team on his 37 points with six rebounds and three blocks. The only other Rutgers player to finish in double-figures was Tyson Acuff with 13 points, four assists and three rebounds. Lathan Sommerville got close though, notching nine points with six rebounds in 27 minutes of work overall.

Rutgers vs Michigan Prediction

I’m leaning toward Michigan. The Wolverines dispatched a decent Penn State team at home in their last outing, hitting 48.4 percent from the field and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from 3-point range with just nine turnovers. Michigan got out-rebounded 34-26, but made up for it with 19 points off 18 Nittany Lions turnovers. That makes 76 or more points in 11 of the last 12 games for the Wolverines.

As for Rutgers, they shot a nice 57.1 percent from the floor with just eight turnovers in their latest win over a middling Northwestern squad. The Knights lost the rebounding battle 33-26 though, and went just 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the line. Rutgers has scored pretty well themselves lately, posting 72 or more points in five straight outings. The Knights will likely have to reach that threshold here in order to compete, but I don’t think they’ll quite cover.

I’m on Northwestern here. My thoughts about Rutgers this entire season have been that this isn’t the same Rutgers teams of years past, where this is a Rutgers program predicated on playing good defense. Also, after Bailey and Harper, there’s a huge dropoff in talent after the two top pieces. Northwestern usually plays their best basketball at home and Chris Collins has a way of bringing the best out of this Wildcat crowd at home I trust Northwestern’s defense to show up at home in this game on the way to a Northwestern win and cover when all is said and done so I’ll lay the points with the Wildcats in this one.

I’m on Michigan State here. I just think that the Spartans are the deeper team and from a metrics/analytics perspective, the matchup favors the Spartans as I feel like Michigan State is better equipped to take advantage of the shortcomings of this Rutgers defense that hasn’t been as potent as years past under Steve Pikiell. The Spartans are still well-coached and are rolling right now and have plenty of experience playing at MSG. I’ll roll with Michigan State in this one.

Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Preview

Rutgers comes into this matchup after winning their last two games and they finally have some momentum in conference play. The Scarlet Knights have beaten Nebraska and UCLA in their last two games and they scored 85 and 75 points in those wins. Rutgers is shooting 44.9% from the field this year, but they have had issues on defense, as they are allowing 74.6 points against per game. Penn State has lost four games in a row, but they have played three very difficult opponents in a row. The Nittany Lions have allowed 90, 82, and 91 points in their last three games, but they are shooting 48.8% from the field and the offense is scoring over 84 points per game. I know Rutgers just picked up a road win, but I don’t trust their shooting percentage on the road, especially with a bad defense. Take Penn State here.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights Betting Preview

Rutgers kicked off the 2024-25 season on a pretty solid run, but they’ve struggled since late November with only one instance of consecutive wins during that time. The Scarlet Knights opened on a 5-1 stretch with wins over Wagner, Saint Peter’s, Monmouth, Merrimack, and Notre Dame alongside a lone loss to Kennesaw State. A 3-4 stretch came after that, with wins over Penn State, Seton Hall, and Columbia mixed with losses to Alabama, Texas A&M, Ohio State, and Princeton. Since then it’s been a 1-4 stretch. The Scarlet Knights fell to Indiana, Wisconsin, and Purdue in succession before a win over UCLA, giving Rutgers a 9-8 overall record through the first 17 games of the season.

In the UCLA game on Monday, the Scarlet Knights came out of halftime sporting a 33-30 deficit. Rutgers did get better from there on a 45-35 second-half run, eventually taking the victory in comeback fashion 75-68. Leading the team in scoring was Ace Bailey, who doubled up on 20 points with 10 boards and three blocks with a pair of assists. Dylan Harper added 18 points with four rebounds and four assists in 28 minutes, while Jeremiah Williams led the bench players on his 11 points, one rebound, one steal, and one assist in 26 minutes of work.

Nebraska Cornhuskers Betting Preview

Over on the Nebraska side, they came out of the gate this year with a flourish, and they’ve only recently suffered their first instance of consecutive losses. The Cornhuskers won six of their first seven games, losing to only Saint Mary’s with wins otherwise versus UTRGV, Bethune-Cookman, Fairleigh Dickinson, Creighton, South Dakota, and North Florida. Following another loss to Michigan State, the Cornhuskers beat Indiana, Murray State, Hawaii, Oregon State, Southern, and UCLA in the next six. In their last two games, however, the Cornhuskers have lost to Iowa and Purdue, giving the team a 12-4 record so far across 16 games.

Matched up against Purdue back on Sunday, Nebraska looked pretty rough. The Cornhuskers limped into the locker room with a 45-28 deficit, then didn’t get any closer in the second with a 59-40 run for a 104-68 defeat. Leading team scorer Connor Essegian came off the bench to post 17 points with five rebounds and three assists. The only other player on the team to notch a double-figure points total was Juwan Gary with 10 alongside one rebound and two turnovers in 29 minutes of work on the floor during the defeat.

Why the Nebraska Cornhuskers will win

Nebraska vs Rutgers Prediction

I’m going to stay with Nebraska. The Cornhuskers do need quite the bounce-back effort after a pair of losses, though. In the Purdue game Nebraska shot well (48.1 percent) from the field but also gave up 63.1 percent on the other side. The Cornhuskers also got out-rebounded 33-20 and coughed up 17 turnovers for 22 Purdue points in the blowout defeat. The 68-point total was fairly low for Nebraska, but not exactly uncharacteristic. The troubling stat is the whopping 201 combined points surrendered over the last two games.

As for Rutgers, they started pretty slowly against a solid UCLA team in their latest game, but to their credit the Knights came through in the end. Rutgers ended up shooting 46.2 percent in that one along with 37 rebounds for a much-needed victory. The Scarlet Knights had posted just 113 combined points over their previous pair, and they’ve given up 68 or more points in four straight. Nebraska should have plenty of room to score Thursday, and playing at home will certainly help. I like the Cornhuskers to notch a nice recovery effort here.

This is such a big game for both teams, but I have to side with Rutgers at home. The Scarlet Knights have the offense to break down UCLA and I just don’t trust this UCLA offense on the road. Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview

Purdue got off to a good start this year but faltered a bit in December. The Boilermakers put up a very nice 7-1 run over their first eight games. The only defeat in that time came on November 19 versus Marquette. Otherwise, Purdue took out Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Northern Kentucky, Yale, Alabama, Marshall, NC State, and Ole Miss during that opening stretch. A 1-3 run began in early December however, as Purdue had just one win over Maryland alongside a trio of losses to Penn State, Texas A&M, and Auburn during that time. Since then, however, the Boilermakers have been able to right the proverbial ship on a three-game win streak. Those victories have come courtesy of Toledo, Minnesota, and Northwestern in succession for an 11-4 overall record through 15 games so far this year.

In the Northwestern matchup on Sunday, the Boilermakers came out of halftime looking up at a dominant 41-18 edge on the scoreboard. Purdue put it in cruise control the rest of the way on a 43-38 second-half deficit and took the easy win 79-61. Tops in scoring was Braden Smith with 22 points, six boards, seven assists, and two steals. Both CJ Cox (eight rebounds) and Trey Kaufman-Renn (six rebounds; four assists) scored 12 points apiece. Lots of bench players got significant work in the victory, including Myles Colvin and his seven points. Raleigh Burgess added six points with one rebound in 11 minutes of action as well. Purdue will meet Nebraska and Washington after this game.

Over on the Rutgers side, they also opened up the year on a nice stretch before hitting a tough run as November came to a close. The Scarlet Knights won in each of their first four outings, taking out Wagner, Saint Peter’s, Monmouth, and Merrimack. A 1-4 run came over the next five games though, with one win over Notre Dame in overtime. Otherwise, it was losses to Kennesaw State, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Ohio State in that quintet. Rutgers would hit a 3-1 record over their next four, taking a loss to Princeton alongside wins over Penn State, Seton Hall, and Columbia. It’s been consecutive losses since then, though. That pair of defeats came at the hands of Indiana and Wisconsin, giving Rutgers an 8-7 record thus far this season.

Matched up against Wisconsin in their last outing, the Scarlet Knights had a relatively muted offensive outing. Rutgers posted a 43-34 halftime deficit and didn’t get any closer, getting outscored 32-29 the rest of the way in a 75-63 result. Tyson Acuff was the leading scorer—and the only one in double-figures on the team—with 17 points, two rebounds and two assists to his credit in 30 minutes off the bench. Among the starters, Jamichael Davis added nine points with three rebounds and two assists, while Ace Bailey had nine points with seven boards.

I’ll stay with Purdue here. The Boilermakers dispatched a pretty good Northwestern team fairly easily in their last outing, shooting a nice 50.9 percent from the field with 15-of-18 (83.3 percent) from the line and a 36-31 rebounding edge. Lots of bench players saw meaningful time on the court, as the game wasn’t in doubt most of the way. During this current three-game winning streak, Purdue has posted 79 or more points in each outing, holding opponents below 65 points in each game as well.

As for Rutgers, they shot just 34.2 percent versus Wisconsin in their last game and they’ve given up 75 or more points in each of their last three losses. The Knights are going to have their hands full on both sides of the court here, so I don’t think they’ll end up getting close.

Wisconsin Badgers Betting Preview

The Badgers’ season kicked off on a very nice run with victories in each of the team’s first eight outings. Those wins came courtesy of Holy Cross, Montana State, Appalachian State, Arizona, Texas Rio Grande Valley, Central Florida, Pittsburgh, and Chicago State. A three-game losing streak ensued after that, however. Those losses were versus Michigan, Marquette, and Illinois in succession. Since then Wisconsin has gotten back on track with three straight wins. The victories in that time have come courtesy of Butler, Detroit, and Iowa for an 11-3 overall record.

In the Iowa game back on Friday, Wisconsin came out of the locker room with a 54-43 edge. The Badgers posted a stellar 62 points from there across the second half, resulting in a dominant victory 116-85 in the end. Topping the team was John Blackwell with 32 points, eight boards, and five assists. Nolan Winter added 18 points with eight rebounds in 25 minutes of work, and Steven Crowl had 14 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Kamari McGee topped the bench players with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists in 21 minutes.

Over on the Rutgers side, they also started out the year on a winning streak—albeit a shorter one. The Knights beat Wagner, Saint Peter’s, Monmouth, and Merrimack, then fell to Kennesaw State before another win over Notre Dame in overtime. Matched up against Indiana on Thursday, the Scarlet Knights held a 41-34 deficit by the end of the first half. Rutgers didn’t end up getting any closer on a 43-40 second half and would fall by the end of the game 84-74. Ace Bailey did the lion’s share of the work with over half the team’s scoring on 39 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, and one steal. Jamichael Davis was the next-closest player with nine points and three assists, while Jeremiah Williams had eight points with eight rebounds and three assists. Tyson Acuff led the bench scoring seven points, two rebounds and one steal in 20 minutes on the floor during the defeat.

I’ll stay with Wisconsin. The Badgers are looking good during this current win streak and dispatched a good Iowa team rather easily in their last outing. Wisconsin posted a blistering 64.5 percent shooting from the field in that one along with 21-of-31 (67.7 percent) from outside and 15-of-17 (88.2 percent) from the line. The 37-21 rebounding edge helped as well, but Wisconsin also coughed up 13 turnovers for 21 Hawkeyes points. Still, that makes 74 or more points in five straight games. Granted, the Badgers are giving up quite a bit on the other side lately as well: 74 or more points in four of those five.

As for Rutgers, they faced a tough opponent in Indiana during their last outing and came away with a spotty loss. The Knights shot 44.3 percent from the floor in that one with a rough 14-of-23 (60.9 percent) from the line and a 48-36 rebounding discrepancy. Their 11 turnovers resulted in 19 Hoosiers points, and only one player finished in double-figures (or made much of a difference at all scoring-wise). Rutgers is going to have their hands full here as well, and I don’t think the Knights will keep much of a pace.

However, home court has been a big deal in the Big Ten for the last couple of seasons, and I think that it proves to be a big deal here as well. The Scarlet Knights lost outright to Kennesaw State in their lone road game so far this season, and I think they could have a tough time here as well. Give me the Buckeyes.
