Wichita State Shockers Betting Preview

Wichita State had an extended rough stretch of games back in December and January, but aside from that they’ve been pretty good record-wise this year. The Shockers won eight of their first nine games, taking out Western Kentucky, Montana State, Northern Iowa, Monmouth, Saint Louis, Minnesota, Alcorn State and East Tennessee State in that time. A 3-9 run came next with wins over Kansas State, Friends U and Charlotte. The losses otherwise were versus DePaul, Kansas City, Temple, South Florida, UTSA, East Carolina, Memphis, Tulsa and North Texas. Since then Wichita State has recovered with four straight wins, taking out Charlotte, South Florida, UTSA and Memphis in that time. Overall through the first 25 games of the season that gives the Shockers a 15-10 record so far.

In the Memphis home rematch on Sunday, the Shockers were up by four points at the break. Wichita State needed overtime in the end, but they’d eventually power out the upset victory 84-79. Leading the team in the big win was Quincy Ballard with 19 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Corey Washington doubled up with his 18 points and 15 rebounds in 41 minutes, while Bijan Cortes had 13 points with six rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes. Tops in scoring off the bench was Harlond Beverly with 11 points, six assists and two blocks.

Florida Atlantic Owls Betting Preview

Over on the Florida Atlantic side, they’ve had a pretty choppy year in spots but they’ve been able to maintain the same record in the books. The Owls went 4-5 in their first nine outings, falling versus UCF, Charleston, Drake, Seton Hall and Florida Gulf Coast among wins versus Indiana State, Coastal Georgia, Liberty and Oklahoma State. A 5-2 run came next with losses to Michigan State and Memphis among wins over FIU, Jacksonville, Texas State, East Carolina and Charlotte. After a 1-3 run with a win over Rice among losses to UAB, Tulane and North Texas, Florida Atlantic hit a win streak. Those victories have come versus UTSA, South Florida, Tulsa, Charlotte and Temple, giving the Owls a 15-10 record through 25 games this season.

Matched up against Temple on Sunday, the Owls held a 40-35 deficit coming into the second half. FAU hit a 48-41 run the rest of the way however, leading to an 83-81 comeback victory. Tre Carroll led the way among starters in the win with 16 points, seven boards and one assist with four blocks. Tops on the team in total was Kaleb Glenn with 17 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal in 32 minutes off the bench. Leland Walker added 12 points with two assists and two steals in 21 minutes of work as well.

Florida Atlantic vs Wichita State Prediction

I’ll try Florida Atlantic here. You could make a case either way, though. This should be a pretty good matchup if both teams play to their capabilities. FAU started slowly in their latest road win over Temple, but ultimately finished with a decent effort. The Owls went just 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) from the line though, and had 12 turnovers for 15 Temple points. Still, the victory keeps FAU’s run going. They’ve now got five wins in a row, hitting 79 or more points in each of those outings (and 83 or more in four of them).

As for Wichita State, they logged a great effort versus a talented Memphis team in their upset win Over the weekend. The Shockers hit just 40 percent from the field but also notched a 54-45 rebounding edge and had only eight turnovers. This should be another dramatic game, but I like the Owls to take it at home in the end.

Wichita State Shockers Betting Preview

The Wichita State Shockers are 14-10 (4-7) this year after they defeated UTSA by a score of 69-64 in their last game. Wichita State has scored 74.3 points per game and they have allowed 73.0 points per game, while also averaging 38.2 rebounds and 12.2 assists per game this season. Xavier Bell is averaging 14.6 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, while Corey Washington is averaging 13.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game this year. Wichita State is shooting 45.2% from the field, 72.3% on free throws, and 30.7% on three-pointers this season. 

Memphis Tigers Betting Preview

The Memphis Tigers are 21-4 (11-1) this season after they defeated South Florida by a score of 80-65 in their last game. Memphis led 42-27 at halftime and they were able to maintain that lead in the second half for the win. The Tigers shot 40.3% from the field, 36% on three-pointers, and 56.7% on free throws in the game. Dain Dainja led Memphis with 20 points and seven rebounds, while PJ Haggerty added 18 points and six rebounds in the win. 

Prior to that game, the Tigers defeated Temple by a score of 90-82 and Tulsa by a score of 83-71. Memphis has won eight games in a row and they are currently first in the AAC standings with an 11-1 record. Memphis has scored 79.4 points per game and they have allowed 72.8 points per game, while also averaging 35.1 rebounds and 14.1 assists per game this season. PJ Haggerty is averaging 21.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game, while Tyrese Hunter is averaging 14.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game this year. Memphis is shooting 47.9% from the field, 70.4% on free throws, and 40.1% on three-pointers this season. 

Why Memphis will beat Wichita State

Wichita State vs Memphis Prediction 

Memphis comes into this matchup ranked #14 in the country and they are 11-1 in conference play, but they will be on the road for this game. The Tigers have won eight games in a row and they have scored at least 80 points in four straight. Memphis is shooting 47.9% from the field this season and they already have a 61-53 win over Wichita State a few weeks ago. Wichita State has won three games in a row, but all three of those wins have been against teams in the bottom part of the AAC standings. The Shockers are shooting 45.2% from the field this year and they have scored fewer than 70 points in three of their last four games. Both of these teams are on winning streaks, but Memphis has been the way more impressive team and they have been fine on the road. Take the Tigers here.

I’m on USF in this game. I just think that USF is the better team on both ends of the floor here, and Wichita State has not been the same team on the road this season. USF has had some issues, but they do play their better basketball at home and while the two offenses may cancel each other out, it’s USF that is the far better defensive unit in this game. Give me USF at home in this one.

The Wichita State Shockers are the more talented team and should win, but they also shouldn’t have lost seven of their last 10 games. Wichita State lost to UMKC as a double-digit favorite and has recent losses to USF, UTSA, and East Carolina in the favorite role. Wichita State just isn’t a team you can back confidently right now. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane have issues of their own, but they’re also at home, where six of their eight wins have come this season. Tulsa has also covered three of its last four games. Wichita State has to right the ship before it can be trusted in these spots, and that defense needs to improve as well. Give me Tulsa and the points at home.

Memphis looked good in the last game against Charlotte, and they scored 77 points on the way to the nine-point victory. Two games ago against Temple, Memphis scored 81 points but the defense gave up 88 points and that led to the defeat. 

Memphis comes into this game with a 14-4 record overall and they have gone 9-9 against the spread. The over has also hit in 9 of the 18 games so far this season. Memphis is averaging 78.8 points while their defense is giving up 74.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 89th in the league while the defense is ranked 259th in the league. PJ Haggerty has been the top player for Memphis averaging 22.1 points while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from behind the three-point line.

There were four different players that put up at least 11 points. Xavier Bell put up 18 points, five assists, and three rebounds. 

Wichita State comes into this game with an 11-7 record overall and they have gone 5-11-1 against the spread. Wichita State is averaging 77.2 points while their defense is giving up 75.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 118th in the league while the defense is ranked 283rd. Xavier Bell is averaging 14.8 points while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from behind the three-point line.

There is going to be no shortage of scoring in this game. Memphis is averaging 78.8 points per game and they are going to have no issue running up the score. Wichita State is averaging 772 points per game, and they are going to have no issue running up the score also. Neither team is going to play any sort of defense here, and the over is going to end up cashing with ease. This is one of my favorite plays on the board for the day.

South Florida has won three games in a row, but they are still looking for their first road win of the year. The Bulls have very similar numbers to Wichita State and they also have issues on defense at times. I do think we are going to see plenty of points in this matchup, but I am siding with South Florida and the points here. I don’t trust either team, so take the points in this one.

Wichita State Shockers Betting Preview

Wichita State opened up their year on a good run, winning their first six games. Those victories came versus Western Kentucky, Montana State, Northern Iowa, Monmouth, Saint Louis, and Minnesota. The Shockers would hit a 2-3 skid after that, taking wins over Alcorn State and East Tennessee State with losses otherwise to Florida, DePaul, and Kansas City. Since then, it’s been a pair of victories for Wichita State over Kansas State and Friends University, though.

In the Sunday game versus Friends U, the Shockers went into the break with a 45-36 edge. Wichita State kept it going in the second with a 42-36 advantage, resulting in an 87-72 victory in the end. Leading the team in scoring (by far) was Xavier Bell with 29 points, four rebounds, and five turnovers. Quincy Ballard doubled up on 17 points and 16 rebounds, while Corey Washington came off the bench to provide 16 points and seven rebounds, with three steals.

Temple Owls Betting Preview

Over on the Temple side, they similarly started well with three straight wins over Sacred Heart, Monmouth, and Drexel. The Owls would hit a 1-4 run in the next five games, though, beating UMass with losses to Boston College, Florida State, La Salle, and Villanova in that time. It’s been a 4-1 run since then, however, with a lone loss to Rhode Island. Otherwise, the Owls have dispatched Holy Family University, Hofstra, Davidson, and Buffalo for an 8-5 season record.

Matched up against Buffalo on Sunday, the Owls were in good shape at the break and sporting a 39-29 edge. Temple didn’t let up after halftime on a 52-42 stretch, leading to a 91-71 blowout win. Jamal Mashburn Jr. topped the team with 18 points, two rebounds, and one assist. Both Zion Stanford (three rebounds; three assists) and Quante Berry (three assists; four steals) scored 15 points off the bench, and Steve Settle doubled up on 13 points and 11 boards.

Why the Temple Owls will win

• Temple has won each of its last five games at Liacouras Center.
• Temple has won the first half in four of its last five games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Wichita State Shockers will win

• Wichita State has won eight of its last nine night games.
• Temple has lost seven of its last eight games against the American Athletic Conference at Liacouras Center.
• Temple has lost the first half in 14 of its last 16 games against the American Athletic Conference.

Temple vs Wichita State Prediction

I may take a stab at Temple here. The Owls played a pretty solid game versus a middling Buffalo team in their last outing, getting a nice team effort in the process. Temple shot an excellent 52.6 percent from the field with a 44-30 rebounding advantage, but there’s still plenty to clean up. The Owls went just 23-of-35 (65.7 percent) from the line and had 16 turnovers for 15 Bulls points.

During this 4-1 run, the Owls have had a couple of scoring duds (62 points versus Davidson and 60 versus Hofstra—both wins) however they’ve scored 79 or more points in the other three games during that time. I’d like to see Temple get to the 70-point mark in this one if at all possible.

As for Wichita State, they didn’t have too many issues with Friends University in their last outing, but it wasn’t quite the blowout that you’d expect against an overmatched foe. The Shockers shot a nice 51.7 percent from the field with a 44-32 rebounding edge but also coughed up 18 turnovers for 20 Friends points in a sloppy overall effort. The 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range and 19-of-25 (76 percent) from the line helped make up the gap, though.

The Shockers have scored a combined 171 points in their last two games (both wins) and they’ve hit 72 or more in five of their last six overall (a 4-2 run). Temple is likely going to have to push hard on offense in order to cover here. I think the Owls pull it off, though. It’s going to be a close one regardless, however. This one feels like more of a coin flip than anything else (and that’s reflected in the tight line). A Temple victory seems slightly more likely to me, but you wouldn’t be crazy about taking Wichita State either. It’ll be a fun one to watch in any event.

DePaul is Struggling

DePaul is really struggling right now and they have lost two games in a row. Two games ago against Texas Tech, DePaul lost 76-62 and in the last game against Providence, they ended up losing 70-63. They were able to force overtime in the last game but still ended up falling short. DePaul on the season is averaging 82.3 points while their defense is giving up 66.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 52nd in the league while the defense is ranked 64th. Jacob Meyer is having a strong season averaging 14.3 points while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Wichita State’s Offense Has Impressed

Wichita State’s offense has been impressive heading into this game, and they have a ton of confidence right now. In the last game against East Tennessee State, Wichita State scored 96  points and they ended up winning by nine points. Justin Hill had a strong game putting up 20 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Wichita State is shooting 54.7 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from behind the three-point line. Guard Justin Hill is averaging 14.6 points while shooting 39 percent from the field. Wichita State is averaging 78.9 points while their defense is giving up 72.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 113th in the league while the defense is ranked 211th. 

Why Wichita State Will Beat DePaul

• Wichita State has won each of its last seven games when playing with a rest advantage.
• DePaul has lost 12 of its last 13 games following a home loss.

This game is going to be a shootout. DePaul is averaging 82.3 points per game and they are going to have no issue running up the score here. Wichita State’s offense has also been good this season averaging 78.9 points per game and they are going to have no issue running up the score. There is going to be zero defense played by either team, and this game is going to end up being over the total.

Florida Dominated on Thursday

Florida sure looked good on Thursday against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Florida State scored 75 points but even more impressive was the defense giving up 58 points. They held Wake Forest to only 37.5 percent from the field and only 15 percent from deep. There were four different players that put in at least 12 points. Walter Clayton Jr had a strong game putting up 21 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Florida on the season is averaging 86.3 points while their defense is giving up 66.4 points per game. The offense is ranked 102nd while the defense is ranked 161st. Alijah Martin has been the top player for Florida averaging 16.7 points while while shooting 43.8 percent from the field. 

Wichita State Pulled it Out

It wasn’t the prettiest game on Thursday against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, but they were able to secure the win. It took overtime, but they were able to secure the 68-66 victory. The Shockers shot 45.6 percent from the field, but only 28.6 percent from the field and that is going to need to be better in this game. Two games ago against Saint Louis, Wichita State scored 88 points and they cruised to the victory. Wichita State is averaging 80.8 points while their defense is giving up 70.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 102nd in the league while the defense is ranked 161st. Justin Hill is averaging 17.4 points while shooting 42.2 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from behind the three-point line.

St. Louis Billikens Betting Preview

The Billikens have been relatively quiet so far this year, with only three games in the bag. St. Louis lost their opener 85-78 versus Santa Clara but then got an easy matchup versus Avila for game two in an eventual 95-44 blowout win.

Over on the Shockers’ side, they’ve got four games down so far. All have been wins—with a couple of close finishes. Wichita State beat Western Kentucky 91-84 and Montana State 89-69 in their first pair. Game three was a 79-73 win over Northern Iowa.

Matched up against Monmouth on Monday, the Shockers played their closest finish of the year. I might try St. Louis here. Probably not touching it, though. The Billikens have scored pretty well this year, notching 77 or more points in every game. That said, St. Louis has also given up 71 or more points in two of three outings as well. The Billikens did pretty well on the boards in their win over LMU (41 rebounds), which they’ll need to do in order to keep pace with the Shockers.

Speaking of Wichita State, they played pretty badly against a winless Monmouth team in their last outing, getting out-rebounded 41-34 with just 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) from 3-point range. If the Shockers can’t clean up their act here, St. Louis should be able to keep a cover pace.

Wichita State Shockers

The Shockers were in bad shape back on February 18 with a 10-16 record and five losses in six games. Wichita State has found their groove since then however, winning four of the last six. Those victories came courtesy of Tulsa, UAB and Rice (twice) alongside losses to Temple and Tulane.

On Wednesday in tournament action versus Rice, Wichita State held a comfortable 52-39 lead by halftime. The Shockers were outscored 42-36 the rest of the way but still held on for the win 88-81. Tops in scoring was Colby Rogers with his 22 points, four assists and two rebounds.

Memphis Tigers

Over on the Memphis side, they slipped to 15-6 overall following a four-game losing streak in late January. The Tigers are on a 7-3 run across their last 10 games though, beating Wichita State, Temple, Tulane, Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, East Carolina and UAB in that time.

In the rematch with Florida Atlantic back on Saturday, the Tigers fell back into the loss column. Memphis posted a 41-35 deficit in the first half and didn’t get any closer on a 51-49 run from there in a 92-84 defeat. Leading scorer Nae’Qwan Tomlin put up 27 points with seven rebounds in the loss.

ANDREW’S FREE WICHITA STATE VS MEMPHIS PREDICTION

I’ll probably just stick with Memphis in this one. The Tigers didn’t exactly play their best in a tricky road matchup versus Florida Atlantic in their last outing, so they’ll need a good effort Thursday. In the FAU loss, Memphis was out-rebounded 41-34 and gave up 48.6 percent shooting but weren’t terrible otherwise. The Tigers have still hit 76 or more points in six straight outings.

Back on February 3 when these teams last played, Memphis eked out a 65-63 home win. Neither squad played all that well on offense (both below 37.6 percent shooting) and the Tigers coughed up 12 turnovers. Memphis’ strength was their 45-33 rebounding edge and an improved second half. I like this one to be a higher-scoring finish, with the Tigers eking out a cover in the end.

I believe Wichita State can make a run, and they are going to find success here. Wichita State is averaging 72.8 points and they are going to have no issue running up teh score here. Rice’s offense only scored 55 points in the last game and they aren’t going to run up the score here. This is going to be a very comfortable victory by Wichita State. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

The Hurricane went a sketchy 9-7 over their first 16 games, then hit a 3-1 run with wins over UTSA, Rice and Wichita State during January. Tulsa would lose four straight versus Florida Atlantic, North Texas, UAB and South Florida before another win over Rice on Saturday.

Over the weekend versus Rice in their last outing, the Golden Hurricane came out of the break with a 43-43 tie and eventually had to go to overtime. Tulsa scored 14 points in the extra period for a 93-82 win. PJ Haggerty led the way on 30 points with 10 boards for a double-double.

Over on the Shockers’ side, they haven’t had much success this year. Wichita State’s year began on an 8-11 run and they’re 2-5 in the last seven. The losses in that time came versus Tulsa, Memphis, Florida Atlantic, East Carolina and Charlotte; the wins were over SMU and UTSA otherwise.

Matched up against Charlotte on Sunday, the Shockers were down by 11 points going into the second half. Wichita State kept the pace from there on 36 more points in a 72-61 defeat. Xavier Bell led the team on 16 points with three rebounds and two steals in the losing effort.

ANDREW’S FREE TULSA VS WICHITA STATE PREDICTION

I’ll go with Tulsa in this one. There’s not a lot to get excited about here if your’e not a fan of either team, though. The Hurricane are at least coming off a win (finally), shooting 46.2 percent from the field with 36 rebounds and 20 assists versus Rice in their last outing. Tulsa had scored fewer than 64 points in three straight games prior to that, however.

These teams last saw each other on January 31 in a 79-68 home win for Tulsa. The Hurricane hit 43.6 percent from the field with 33 rebounds in that one, recovering from a 43-32 first-half deficit along the way. This one’s probably going to be competitive as well, and I like Tulsa to power out the cover. I’m probably not touching it, though.

Wichita State Shockers

The Shockers started out their year on a decent 8-3 stretch, then hit an eight-game losing streak that stretched into late January. Wichita State is just 2-4 since then with losses to Tulsa, Memphis, FAU and East Carolina alongside wins over only SMU and UTSA.

In their latest outing versus East Carolina on Thursday, the Shockers went into the second half facing a 38-27 deficit. Wichita State didn’t get any closer on a 30-28 run from there and lost 68-55. Colby Rogers was the team’s leading scorer on 16 points with two steals.

Charlotte 49ers

Over on the 49ers’ side, they started out the year on a pretty sketchy 6-7 run that went into the new calendar year. Charlotte would then hit an eight-game win streak as they found their footing before taking a loss to South Florida on February 6. It’s been wins over Temple and UTSA in the last two games.

Matched up against UTSA in their last game Thursday, the 49ers held a slim two-point edge in the locker room. Charlotte came back with a 33-26 stretch from there however, eventually winning 79-70. Dishon Jackson was the top team scorer on 19 points and four rebounds.

ANDREW’S FREE WICHITA STATE VS CHARLOTTE PREDICTION

I’ll stick with Charlotte. The 49ers took care of a struggling UTSA team pretty well in their last outing, but did have a couple of glaring issues in addition to the slow start. Charlotte shot a tepid 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from 3-point range in that one and got out-rebounded 43-36 (18-8 offensive) in the victory. Still, it was the 49ers’ 10th win in 11 games and they’ve scored 69 or more points in five of the last six.

As for Wichita State, they’ve been pretty choppy during this 1-4 stretch and have scored fewer than 69 points in two of the last four. If Charlotte gets going on offense in this one, I don’t see the Shockers keeping a cover pace.
