Wichita State Shockers Betting Preview

Wichita State had an extended rough stretch of games back in December and January, but aside from that they’ve been pretty good record-wise this year. The Shockers won eight of their first nine games, taking out Western Kentucky, Montana State, Northern Iowa, Monmouth, Saint Louis, Minnesota, Alcorn State and East Tennessee State in that time. A 3-9 run came next with wins over Kansas State, Friends U and Charlotte. The losses otherwise were versus DePaul, Kansas City, Temple, South Florida, UTSA, East Carolina, Memphis, Tulsa and North Texas. Since then Wichita State has recovered with four straight wins, taking out Charlotte, South Florida, UTSA and Memphis in that time. Overall through the first 25 games of the season that gives the Shockers a 15-10 record so far.

In the Memphis home rematch on Sunday, the Shockers were up by four points at the break. Wichita State needed overtime in the end, but they’d eventually power out the upset victory 84-79. Leading the team in the big win was Quincy Ballard with 19 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Corey Washington doubled up with his 18 points and 15 rebounds in 41 minutes, while Bijan Cortes had 13 points with six rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes. Tops in scoring off the bench was Harlond Beverly with 11 points, six assists and two blocks.

Florida Atlantic Owls Betting Preview

Over on the Florida Atlantic side, they’ve had a pretty choppy year in spots but they’ve been able to maintain the same record in the books. The Owls went 4-5 in their first nine outings, falling versus UCF, Charleston, Drake, Seton Hall and Florida Gulf Coast among wins versus Indiana State, Coastal Georgia, Liberty and Oklahoma State. A 5-2 run came next with losses to Michigan State and Memphis among wins over FIU, Jacksonville, Texas State, East Carolina and Charlotte. After a 1-3 run with a win over Rice among losses to UAB, Tulane and North Texas, Florida Atlantic hit a win streak. Those victories have come versus UTSA, South Florida, Tulsa, Charlotte and Temple, giving the Owls a 15-10 record through 25 games this season.

Matched up against Temple on Sunday, the Owls held a 40-35 deficit coming into the second half. FAU hit a 48-41 run the rest of the way however, leading to an 83-81 comeback victory. Tre Carroll led the way among starters in the win with 16 points, seven boards and one assist with four blocks. Tops on the team in total was Kaleb Glenn with 17 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal in 32 minutes off the bench. Leland Walker added 12 points with two assists and two steals in 21 minutes of work as well.

Florida Atlantic vs Wichita State Prediction

I’ll try Florida Atlantic here. You could make a case either way, though. This should be a pretty good matchup if both teams play to their capabilities. FAU started slowly in their latest road win over Temple, but ultimately finished with a decent effort. The Owls went just 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) from the line though, and had 12 turnovers for 15 Temple points. Still, the victory keeps FAU’s run going. They’ve now got five wins in a row, hitting 79 or more points in each of those outings (and 83 or more in four of them).

As for Wichita State, they logged a great effort versus a talented Memphis team in their upset win Over the weekend. The Shockers hit just 40 percent from the field but also notched a 54-45 rebounding edge and had only eight turnovers. This should be another dramatic game, but I like the Owls to take it at home in the end.

Temple is Suddenly Struggling

Temple is suddenly struggling heading into this game and they have lost three games in a row. In the last game against Tulsa, Temple scored 74 points while the defense gave up 80 points and that led to the defeat. Temple shot 42.4 percent from the field while they allowed Tulsa to shoot 53.4 percent from the field. Jamal Mashburn Jr had a strong game putting up 19 points, six assists, and three rebounds. No one has been able to slow him down all season. There were five different players that put up at least 10 points. Two games ago against Memphis, they ended up losing 90-82. 

Temple currently sits with a 14-11 record overall and they have gone 11-13 against the spread. Temple is averaging 80.5 points while their defense is giving up 78.5 points per game. The offense is ranked 41st in the league while the defense is ranked 331st. They have done a good job of getting to the free throw line averaging 19.5 free throws per game. Jamal Mashburn Jr has been the top player averaging 22 points while shooting 42.9 percent from the field.

FAU Looks for Fifth Straight-Up Win

FAU has confidence heading into this game and they have won four straight games. Two games ago against Tulsa, they won 79-55 and in the last game against Charlotte, they ended up securing the 87-75 victory. Florida Atlantic shot 54.2 percent from the field and 48 percent from behind the three-point line. Kaleb Glenn had a strong game, putting up 18 points, six rebounds, and one assist. There were four different players that ended up putting at least 11 points. 

FAU has a 14-10 overall record and has gone 10-13 against the spread. Its offense is averaging 81.3 points, while its defense is giving up 76 points per game. The offense is ranked 34th in the league, while the defense is ranked 299th. For FAU to find success in this game, the offense is going to need to get out to a fast start to put on a show. Kaleb Glenn is averaging 12.6 points while shooting 54.3 percent from the field.

It doesn’t matter how much Jamal Mashburn Jr. does; the rest of the team just doesn’t have enough interest in playing defense. Temple is giving up 78.5 points per game on the season, and they are going to really struggle to defend in this game. I’m on FAU here. FAU is finally starting to show signs of the team we expected to see coming into the year or at least into conference play despite their coaching change from Dusty May to John Jakus in the offseason. The Owls have been lighting it up and I just don’t think that Charlotte has enough in the tank to hang with FAU for a full 40 minutes. One win over Rice isn’t going to move the needle for me with this Charlotte team as I look to fade the 49ers wherever possible. I think FAU defends home court here and keeps the momentum going so I’ll lay the points with the Owls at home in this one.

I’m on UAB and the points in this one. I really think that the Blazers are a better team than their record would indicate and they do have the edge at the foul line in conference play. When I back an underdog in conference, I want a team that’s going to hit their free throws and the Blazers are the second-best free throw shooting team in conference play so far this season. FAU is good at forcing turnovers, but that’s about it in my eyes and I think that UAB is live for the outright win here. Give me UAB and the points.

FAU Is Struggling

This isn’t the same FAU team as the last couple of years and they are looking to bounce back here. FAU has lost each of the last two games and the defense has been a major problem heading into this game. Two games ago against Michigan State, FAU was defeated 86-69 and in the last game against Memphis, they scored 62 points, while the defense gave up 90 points. FAU allowed Memphis to shoot 55.6 percent from the field while they shot only 32.4 percent from the field. They also only shot 16.1 percent from behind the three-point line.

FAU on the season is averaging 83.1 points while their defense is giving up 78.4 points per game. The offense is ranked 40th in the league while the defense is ranked 328th. This is a team that can score, but their defense has been a major problem all year. If they want to be better in this game, the defense is going to need to be better. Forward Kaleb Glenn is having a strong season and he is averaging 13.2 points while shooting 55.5 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from behind the three-point line.

Back to Back Losses for East Carolina

East Carolina has lost back-to-back games, and that really hurt their confidence. Two games ago against Gardner-Webb, East Carolina was defeated 84-79 and in the last game against South Florida, they ended up losing 75-69. Guard Jordan Riley had a strong game putting up 20 points, seven rebounds, and one assist. As a team, East Carolina shot only 35.5 percent from the field and only 15.8 percent from deep. They did hit 22 of the 27 free throws, but in this game, they need to do a better job of hitting shots from the field. 

East Carolina as a team is averaging 76.6 points while their defense is giving up 70.9 points per game. The offense is ranked 150th in the league while the defense is ranked 171st. This is a team that can score, but their defense has not been great. Guard RJ Felton has been the top player for East Carolina averaging 17.1 points while shooting 39.1 percent from the field. There are four different players that are averaging at least 10 points per game. In this game, East Carolina is going to need the defense to step up in a big way. 

East Carolina vs FAU Prediction

What do both of these teams have in common? They both can really score, but their defense has been an issue. East Carolina is averaging 76.6 points per game but their defense has been awful giving up 70.9 points per game. They will score, but they are going to have some major issues slowing down an FAU offense that is averaging 83.1 points per game. There will be zero defense played by either team and this game is going to be a shootout. Back the over to cash.

Florida Atlantic Owls Betting Preview

FAU came out of the gate this year on a 4-2 run, taking losses to only UCF and Charleston in that time. The Owls would lose to Drake, Seton Hall and FGCU before three more wins over FIU, Jacksonville and Texas State.

In the Texas State game, the Owls turned a 43-40 halftime edge into an 89-80 victory with a 46-40 run in the second. Leading the team in scoring off the bench was Tre Carroll with 18 points and four rebounds to his credit.

Michigan State Spartans Betting Preview

Over on the Michigan State side, they took out Monmouth, Niagara, Bowling Green, Samford and Colorado during their first six games. After a loss to Memphis it was wins over North Carolina, Minnesota, Nebraska and Oakland in the next four.

On Tuesday versus Oakland, the Spartans were ahead by one point at the break, then hit a 46-28 run for a 77-58 win in the end. Xavier Booker led the team on 18 points with six rebounds.

Michigan State vs FAU Prediction

I’ll probably just stick with Michigan State here. The Spartans started pretty slowly against a struggling Oakland team in their last outing, but ended up going 19-of-23 (82.6 percent) from the line with a dominant 51-31 rebounding advantage. There’s plenty for the Spartans to clean up here, but the 77 or more points in four straight games is a promising sign.

As for FAU, they shot a nice 52.5 percent from the field in their win over Texas State but missed nine of their 29 free throws (69 percent) in the process and allowed 51.8 percent shooting on the other side. The Owls have scored 85 or more points in three straight (all wins) but may have difficulties keeping up with the Spartans on Michigan State’s home court.

Change at Head Coach for Charlotte

Biff Poggi was fired as the Charlotte head coach and it will be interesting to see how the team responds to that. Charlotte just hasn’t been able to turn the corner and coming into this game with a 3-7 record overall. In the last game, Charlotte faced off against South Florida and they scored 24 points, but the defense gave up 59 points. DeShawn Purdie completed 17 of his 39 passes for 256 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. In this game, the defense can’t be as bad as they were in the last game. The 49ers are averaging 21.6 points while their defense is giving up 36.7 points per game. The offense is ranked 112th in the league while the defense is ranked 126th. 

Why Charlotte Will Beat FAU

FAU Offense is Struggling

FAU’s offense is struggling heading into this game and they can’t have a whole lot of confidence heading into this game. Two games ago against East Carolina, FAU was defeated 49-14 and in the last game against Temple they forced overtime, but they ended up losing. Kasen Weisman and Tyriq Stakes both played under center in the last game and neither were all that good. Weisman completed 11 of his 23 passes for 123 yards. CJ Campbell had a strong game finishing with 20 carries for 70 yards and two touchdowns. FAU on the season is averaging 22.1 points while their defense is giving up 30.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 108th in the league while the defense is ranked 106th. 

FAU vs Charlotte Prediction

Let’s start this by saying there are better games on the board to bet. That being said, if you want to bet on this game, Charlotte has to be the play. There is that boost from firing their coach and that is going to be the difference here. I trust Charlotte’s quarterback plays more, and the 49ers offense is going to find success here. FAU is going to have no answer and Charlotte will cover the spread here.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Preview

The Cowboys have gotten through three games unscathed so far. Oklahoma State opened up with an 89-76 win over Green Bay, then took out St. Thomas MN in their second outing on November 10 by a score of 80-71.

Last Thursday at home versus Southern Illinois, Oklahoma State took a 38-37 edge into the second half. The Cowboys got better from there on a 47-41 run and won the game 85-78. Over on the Owls’ side, they’ve been relatively busy so far with five games in the books. Florida Atlantic got through their first pair with wins over Indiana State and Coastal Georgia, then lost the next two 100-94 to UCF and 119-116 to Charleston.

Matched up against Liberty in their latest outing on Saturday, the Owls came back from a three-point halftime deficit to eventually win 77-74 in overtime. I’ll lean toward Florida Atlantic. You could make a good case either way, though. The Owls had a tough time shaking off Liberty in their last outing, eventually notching 50.8 percent shooting from the field with 34 rebounds and 13 turnovers. FAU has scored well this year with 77 or more points in every game, but they’ve also given up 74 or more in three straight.

As for OK State, they put up 47.7 percent shooting with a 36-33 rebounding deficit in their last outing against Southern Illinois. The Cowboys have scored well themselves this year with 80 or more points in all three games. I like a big total here with FAU eking out a home cover (and maybe a win). Should be a fun one to check out.

FAU Owls Betting Preview

The Owls opened up the season last Monday versus Indiana State. FAU didn’t have too many issues in that game, cruising to a 97-64 win after 53 first-half points. Tops in scoring was Niccolo Moretti with 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Game two was another winner for the Owls, this time against Coastal Georgia. FAU posted 51 first-half points and eventually took a blowout win 99-49. Ken Evans (six assists) and Kaleb Glenn (three rebounds) each had a team-high 18 points.

UCF Knights Betting Preview

Over on the UCF side, they took on a tough Texas A&M team in their opener. After a 29-29 first-half tie, the Knights surged on 35 more points for a 64-61 win. Darius Johnson led the way on 24 points with five assists and three boards.

I’m leaning toward FAU. You could make a case either way, though. We should have a fun matchup here. The Owls have done well in a couple of relative warmup games so far. In the blowout win over Coastal Georgia, FAU posted a 53-27 rebounding edge, 17 steals, and 26 team assists. This will be their first big test of the season, though.

As for UCF, they held a 44-30 rebounding advantage versus Fort Wayne and hit a decent 23-of-30 (76.7 percent) from the line. The 3-point shooting was ugly, though: 2-of-20 (10 percent). I expect this matchup to be a fairly high-scoring affair and close most of the way as FAU ekes out a cover. It’ll be a good one to watch.

South Florida Bulls Betting Preview

The Bulls got off to a 2-1 start this year, losing in a blowout to Alabama in between wins over Bethune-Cookman and Southern Miss. Three more consecutive losses followed for USF as they dropped to Miami, Tulane, and Memphis.

In their last outing versus UAB, the Bulls were able to get back into the win column. USF posted 28 second-half points during a 35-25 victory. QB Bryce Archie finished with 201 yards, two scores, and an interception, while Kelley Joiner led the rush with 94 yards and two TDs.

FAU Owls Betting Preview

Over on the Florida Atlantic side, they went 1-3 in their first quartet. The lone win was over FIU 38-20; otherwise, it was losses to Michigan State, Army, and UConn. After a win over Wagner, the Owls took another loss to North Texas 41-37.

I’ll probably just stick with South Florida here. The Bulls scored 35 points in their latest outing in an overall adequate—if not super impressive—offensive effort. South Florida posted 355 total yards in that one (201 passing) but also had a couple of turnovers and held the ball for just 25:18. An opportunistic defense (two takeaways) and nine UAB penalties really helped.

As for FAU, they put up just 203 total yards in their loss to UTSA. The Owls had only 10 first downs, two turnovers and went just 4-of-14 on third-down tries. Getting back home may give FAU a lift, but I don’t think they’ll have enough offensive power to cover here.

Michigan State Spartans Betting Preview

The Michigan State Spartans have won a combined 9 games in the last 2 years and now begin the Jonathan Smith era. Smith won 34 games in 6 years at Oregon State and brings along a new coaching staff. Quarterback Aidan Chiles joins Smith from Oregon State after playing in 9 games last year as a freshman. The Spartans’ offensive line will also be better, with all-Pac-12 secretion Tanner Miller coming over from the Beavers and Andrew Dennis from Illinois. Michigan State doesn’t have much-proven production at the skill positions, but Montorie Foster is back for a fifth season and is fresh off 43 catches.

Defensively, Cal Haladay returns after leading Michigan State with 91 tackles, Jordan Hall had 4.5 sacks and Angelo Grose had 2 interceptions. There are a lot of question marks for Michigan State and new coaching staff, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see another year of 5 or 6 wins. Michigan State will meet Maryland after this game.

The Northwestern Wildcats and the free bucket is probably where the value is at. Northwestern has proven itself in the Big Ten this season and is led by one of the best offenses in the country. Northwestern is 92nd in field goal percentage and eighth in three point percentage. The FAU Owls have been a bit of a letdown this season as they’ve lost a lot of weird games, and that includes a loss to Temple in the AAC Tournament as a 14-point favorite. With all that said, this is the same FAU squad that made the Final Four last season. That experience and chemistry matters. I’m banking on that getting FAU at least one win in this tournament. I’ll lay the bucket.
