Loyola Marymount Lions Betting Preview

So far this year Loyola Marymount has had a few rough runs. In all however, the Lions have been able to keep their heads above the .500 mark in the record column. LMU opened on a 3-4 stretch with losses to UC Irvine, Saint Louis, North Dakota and Colorado State alongside wins over Life Pacific, Belmont and Wyoming. After wins over Nevada, Prairie View, UC Santa Barbara, Southern and North Alabama, the Lions hit a 1-4 run with a lone win over Oregon State. The losses otherwise were versus San Francisco, Washington State, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s. LMU would beat Santa Clara, San Diego, Pacific, Portland and San Diego in the next five, and since then it’s been a 1-4 run with a win over Pepperdine. The Lions have otherwise lost to Gonzaga, San Francisco, Pacific and Portland in that time, giving the team a 15-12 record through their first 27 outings of the season.

LMU was down by one point at halftime in their last outing versus Portland. The Lions ended up falling further behind in the second with a 57-47 deficit and lost the game 89-78 in the end. Leading the team in the losing effort was Caleb Stone-Carrawell with 18 points and five rebounds in 36 minutes of work. Will Johnston added 17 points with three assists and two boards, while Jevon Porter had 16 points with six rebounds in 35 minutes out there.

Santa Clara Broncos Betting Preview

Over on the Santa Clara side, they’ve got a rough spot or two in the books themselves but overall they’re not doing too badly. The Broncos opened on a 3-5 run though, taking losses to Arizona State, North Dakota State, Nevada and Stanford. A win streak over McNeese, Fresno State, Bradley, Kennesaw State, South Dakota and Pepperdine came next, then a 5-4 run with losses to San Francisco, LMU, Oregon State and Saint Mary’s. The Broncos otherwise beat San Diego, Oregon State, San Francisco, Gonzaga and Washington State in that time. Since then it’s been wins over Pacific, Portland and San Diego before a loss to Saint Mary’s. That gives the Broncos a 17-10 overall record though their first 27 games this season so far.

Matched up against Saint Mary’s on the road last week, the Broncos were down by seven going into the second half. Santa Clara didn’t get any better from there on a 36-34 deficit and took the loss 73-64. Johnny O’Neil led the team with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Jake Ensminger led the bench scoring with 13 points, three boards and three steals, while Camaron Tongue had 11 points with two rebounds in 14 minutes on the floor.

Santa Clara vs Loyola Marymount Prediction

I’m staying with Santa Clara. The Broncos are coming off a pretty limp loss on the road versus a good Saint Mary’s team though, so they’ll need to show some life here. Santa Clara shot just 40.4 percent from the field in that one with a 31-28 rebounding deficit and 12 turnovers for 15 Gaels points. The Broncos gave up 53.2 percent shooting on the other side and just couldn’t keep pace. Santa Clara had won three straight prior to that though, with 83 or more points in all three games.

The Broncos managed to take a 57-54 loss on the road the last time these teams saw each other back on January 16. Santa Clara shot just 36.2 percent from the field in that one and had 13 turnovers for 12 LMU points, so needless to say there’s plenty to clean up. I like the Broncos to notch a better effort in the home rematch, though.

St. Mary’s Gaels Betting Preview

The St. Mary’s Gaels are 21-4 (11-1) this year after they defeated Oregon State by a score of 63-49 in their last game. St. Mary’s led 30-19 at halftime and was able to score 33 points in the second half to secure the win. Washington State is averaging 81.5 points while their defense is giving up 74.9 points per game. The offense is ranked 38th in the league while the defense is ranked 236th. They are averaging 17.1 assists per game which is 27th in the league. Top scorer Cedric Coward is averaging 17.7 points but he’s still out with a shoulder injury. Rihards Vavers is dealing with a hand injury and is out for the season. 

Santa Clara Looks for Second Straight Win

Santa Clara faced off against Gonzaga in the last game on the road, and they put on quite a show. Santa Clara scored 59 points in the second half and that was enough for the 103-99 victory. Santa Clara shot 53.7 percent from the field and 47.4 percent from behind the three-point line. Tyrese Bryan had quite the game putting up 35 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Santa Clara comes into this game with a 13-7 record overall and they have gone 9-11 against the spread. Santa Clara is averaging 80.7 points while their defense is giving up 75.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 54th in the league while the defense is ranked 272nd in the league. They are averaging 16.15 assists per game which is 60h in the league. This really is a letdown spot for Santa Clara. After so much success against Gonzaga, there still has to be some concern with the defense. Santa Clara Broncos Betting Preview

Santa Clara’s season got started with a very shaky run, but to their credit the Broncos have ben able to right the proverbial ship and they’re looking much better as of late. Santa Clara lost five of their first eight games this year, beating only Saint Louis, UC Riverside and TCU in that time. Otherwise it was losses to Arizona State, North Dakota State, Nevada, Stanford and Washington. Following a six-game win streak versus McNeese, Fresno State, Bradley, Kennesaw State, South Dakota and Pepperdine, Santa Clara took another loss to San Francisco in overtime on December 30. The Broncos were able to start out the new calendar year on a great run though, beating San Diego, Oregon State and San Francisco in the next three games for a 12-6 overall run through their first 16 outings of the season.

In the matchup with Loyola Marymount on Thursday, the Broncos were within three points 29-26 by halftime. Santa Clara didn’t end up gaining any ground from there however, eventually losing 57-54 after a 28-28 run in the second half. Leading the team in scoring was Christoph Tilly with 25 points and four boards. Adama-Alpha Bal was the only other player on the team to finish in double-figures with 14 points, five assists and two rebounds in 31 minutes of work.

Gonzaga Bulldogs Betting Preview

Over on the Gonzaga side, they had a shaky run in late November/early December but outside of that they’ve been quite the steady team so far this season. The Bulldogs took out Baylor, Arizona State, UMass Lowell, San Diego State and Long Beach State in their first five games. The next five were a rough 2-3 run though, featuring wins over Indiana and Davidson amid losses to West Virginia, Kentucky and UConn. Gonzaga hit a 7-1 stretch over the next eight with a lone loss to UCLA. Otherwise it was wins over Nicholls, Bucknell, Pepperdine, Portland, Loyola Marymount, San Diego and Washington State for a 14-4 opening run over 18 games.

Matched up against Oregon State in their Thursday game, the Bulldogs had a tough battle on their hands. Gonzaga was down by one point 46-45 going into the second half, forced overtime and eventually lost a tough one 97-89. All five starters finished in double-figures during the defeat though, with Graham Ike leading the team on 26 points and nine rebounds. Ben Gregg notched a double-double on 15 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Ryan Nembhard doubled as well with 13 points, 10 assists and six rebounds in 44 minutes.

Gonzaga vs Santa Clara Prediction

I’ll lean toward Gonzaga. Some of the luster has worn off this matchup however, seeing as how both teams are coming off tough road defeats this week. The Bulldogs shot 41.7 percent with a 41-28 rebounding edge (19-3 offensive) in their loss to Oregon State, but also coughed up 12 turnovers for 19 Beavers points and gave up 58.5 percent shooting on defense. Still, Gonzaga has scored 81 or more points in six straight games now (a 5-1 run), so that’s nothing to sneeze at. The defense could use a shot in the arm statistically, however.
As for Santa Clara, they shot just 36.2 percent from the field and 15.4 percent (4-of-26) from 3-point range in their latest loss to LMU. The 13 turnovers didn’t help matters, either. The 54 points in that defeat broke a string of 74 or more points in 10 straight outings (a 9-1 run), so it was a pretty disappointing effort offensively. I like Santa Clara to hold the pace for most of the game here, but it should be Gonzaga’s cover to take if the Bulldogs play well.

Oregon State Impressed in Last Game

Oregon State sure looked impressive in the last game and they are going to look to run up the score here. In this game, they need the offense more like the last game and less tan like two games ago. 

Oregon State is averaging 76.1 points while their defense is giving up 62.6 points per game. The offense is ranked 164th in the league while the defense is ranked 17th. They as a team are averaging eight steals per game and a couple of steals would be really helpful for the chances here. Michael Rataj has been the top player for Oregon State and is currently averaging 16.7 points while shooting 48.4 percent from the field.

Santa Clara Pulled it Out

There wasn’t anything sexy about the last game for Santa Clara, but they made just enough plays to beat San Diego 81-80. They were outscored 53-46 in the second half, but still held on. Guard Carlos Stewart had a strong game putting up 20 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Guard Tyree Byran also put up 10 points, five rebounds, and one assist. 

Two games ago against San Francisco, Santa Clara scored 94 points but they ended up losing because the defense gave up 97 points. Santa Clara is averaging 81.1 points while their defense is giving up 75.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 65th in the league while the defense is ranked 287th. Adama Alpha Bel is averaging 13.6 points while shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from behind the three-point line.

Arizona State Sun Devils Betting Preview

As for Arizona State, they didn’t shoot all that great in the win over Idaho State. Santa Clara put up a 16-6 record across their first 22 outings this year. The Broncos manatee a 5-2 run in the next seven with wins over San Francisco, San Diego, LMU, BYU and Portland following losses to Pacific and Gonzaga. 

In the Pepperdine game on Thursday, the Broncos were ahead 40-36 after the first half. In the second, Santa Clara put up a 51-46 run and took the win 91-82. Brandin Podziemski led the team on a double-double with 23 points and 18 rebounds. 

San Diego Toreros 

Over on the San Diego side, they didn’t quite hit .500 out of the gate with a 9-11 record through 20 games. The Toreros won just two of the next eight games, falling to Portland, San Francisco, Portland again, Santa Clara, Pacific and Saint Mary’s in that time. 

Matched up against Gonzaga in the Thursday game, the Toreros were down 48-31 going into the second half. San Diego was outscored 49-41 from there and lost 97-72. Jase Townsend was the top scorer on 15 points.

I’ll stick with Santa Clara here. You could make a case either way, though. The Broncos are sitting on a nice six-game win streak right now. Santa Clara has scored 71 or more points scored in each of those games and 80 or more in five of them. One of those victories came February 9 versus San Diego at Leavey Center. The Broncos were down 40-31 in that one but rallied to ultimately bag an 80-75 win. Santa Clara is going to have to get off to a much better start here but I think they can pull it off. Should be a pretty good game regardless.
