Loyola Marymount Lions Betting Preview

So far this year Loyola Marymount has had a few rough runs. In all however, the Lions have been able to keep their heads above the .500 mark in the record column. LMU opened on a 3-4 stretch with losses to UC Irvine, Saint Louis, North Dakota and Colorado State alongside wins over Life Pacific, Belmont and Wyoming. After wins over Nevada, Prairie View, UC Santa Barbara, Southern and North Alabama, the Lions hit a 1-4 run with a lone win over Oregon State. The losses otherwise were versus San Francisco, Washington State, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s. LMU would beat Santa Clara, San Diego, Pacific, Portland and San Diego in the next five, and since then it’s been a 1-4 run with a win over Pepperdine. The Lions have otherwise lost to Gonzaga, San Francisco, Pacific and Portland in that time, giving the team a 15-12 record through their first 27 outings of the season.

LMU was down by one point at halftime in their last outing versus Portland. The Lions ended up falling further behind in the second with a 57-47 deficit and lost the game 89-78 in the end. Leading the team in the losing effort was Caleb Stone-Carrawell with 18 points and five rebounds in 36 minutes of work. Will Johnston added 17 points with three assists and two boards, while Jevon Porter had 16 points with six rebounds in 35 minutes out there.

Santa Clara Broncos Betting Preview

Over on the Santa Clara side, they’ve got a rough spot or two in the books themselves but overall they’re not doing too badly. The Broncos opened on a 3-5 run though, taking losses to Arizona State, North Dakota State, Nevada and Stanford. A win streak over McNeese, Fresno State, Bradley, Kennesaw State, South Dakota and Pepperdine came next, then a 5-4 run with losses to San Francisco, LMU, Oregon State and Saint Mary’s. The Broncos otherwise beat San Diego, Oregon State, San Francisco, Gonzaga and Washington State in that time. Since then it’s been wins over Pacific, Portland and San Diego before a loss to Saint Mary’s. That gives the Broncos a 17-10 overall record though their first 27 games this season so far.

Matched up against Saint Mary’s on the road last week, the Broncos were down by seven going into the second half. Santa Clara didn’t get any better from there on a 36-34 deficit and took the loss 73-64. Johnny O’Neil led the team with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Jake Ensminger led the bench scoring with 13 points, three boards and three steals, while Camaron Tongue had 11 points with two rebounds in 14 minutes on the floor.

Why the Santa Clara Broncos will win

Santa Clara vs Loyola Marymount Prediction

I’m staying with Santa Clara. The Broncos are coming off a pretty limp loss on the road versus a good Saint Mary’s team though, so they’ll need to show some life here. Santa Clara shot just 40.4 percent from the field in that one with a 31-28 rebounding deficit and 12 turnovers for 15 Gaels points. The Broncos gave up 53.2 percent shooting on the other side and just couldn’t keep pace. Santa Clara had won three straight prior to that though, with 83 or more points in all three games.

The Broncos managed to take a 57-54 loss on the road the last time these teams saw each other back on January 16. Santa Clara shot just 36.2 percent from the field in that one and had 13 turnovers for 12 LMU points, so needless to say there’s plenty to clean up. I like the Broncos to notch a better effort in the home rematch, though.

Loyola Marymount Has Confidence 

Loyola Marymount has a ton of confidence heading into this game and they have won five games in a row. Two games ago it was a completion domination and they were able to secure the 88-63 victory over Portland. In the last game against San Diego, Loyola Marymount was able to secure the 78-62 victory. In the second half of the last game, they scored 43 points and they ended up securing the win. MJ Amey put up 16 points and two rebounds. Jevon Porter put up 14 points, 12 rebounds, and one assist. Aleksandre Merkviladze put up 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. 

Loyola Marymount comes into this game with a 14-8 record overall and they have gone 9-12 against the spread. Away from home this season they have won only two games. Loyola Marymount is averaging 71.3 points while their defense is giving up 69.5 points per game. They are averaging 4.05 blocks per game which is 87th in the league. Gonzaga Isn’t as Good

This isn’t the same Gonzaga team as the last few years and they are coming off another loss in the last game. Gonzaga scored 58 points against Saint Mary’s and even though the defense gave up only 62 points and that led to the defeat. At halftime, they were down 36-28 and even though they fought back a bit in the second half it still wasn’t enough. Graham Ike has been the top player for Gonzaga putting up 24 points, eight rebounds, and one assist. Ryan Nembhard also had a strong game putting up 11 points, and 12 assists. Outside of those two, there just wasn’t enough offensive output. 

Gonzaga sits with a 16-7 record overall and they have gone 9-14 against the spread. This is a team that trends towards the over with it hitting 15 times. Gonzaga is averaging 88.2 points while their defense is giving up 71.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 2nd in the league while the defense is ranked 169th. They also put up a ton of shots, and they are ranked 12th in terms of field goals attempted. They are shooting 49.47 percent from the field which is 5th in the league.

The Loyola Marymount defense is going to have no answer and it’s going to be Gonzaga that is going to end up cruising. Gonzaga just has too many weapons against a bad defense. Loyola Marymount is suddenly struggling heading into this game and they have lost two games in a row. Gonzaga got off to a nice start this year, going 15-3 over their first 18 games. The Bulldogs have since gone 6-2 over their last eight, beating Portland, Pacific, Portland again, Santa Clara, San Francisco and BYU in those outings.

LMU Lions

I’m going to stick with Gonzaga here. The Bulldogs are playing pretty well over their last six games (a 5-1 stretch), scoring 70 or more in each outing and 82 or more in five of them. Gonzaga has something to prove in this matchup, however. The last time these teams met up back on January 19 at McCarthey Athletic Center, LMU powered out a 68-67 victory that was pretty close the whole way. Gonzaga was out-rebounded 38-29 (12-7 offensive) in that one and went just 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) from the line. LMU took the victory despite 16 turnovers to the Bulldogs’ eight, shooting 47.4 percent along the way. This one’s probably going to be close most of the way as well, but I like Gonzaga to get a little revenge on a cover here. Should be a fun game to watch.

Loyola Marymount posted a pretty good run over their first 18 games, going 12-6 overall. The Lions hit a 4-3 stretch in the next seven, beating San Diego, Gonzaga, Portland and Pepperdine with losses to Saint Mary’s, BYU and San Diego otherwise. 

In the Saint Mary’s matchup on Thursday, the Lions came back from a 30-23 halftime deficit to force overtime. After 15 points in the extra period, LMU came away with a 78-74 win. Cameron Shelton was tops on 31 points and five rebounds. 

Santa Clara Broncos 

Over on the Santa Clara side, they were 14-4 at the 18-game mark this season. The Broncos hit a 3-4 run over the next seven with losses to Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, Pacific and Gonzaga again. The wins came versus Pacific, BYU and San Francisco. 

On Thursday versus San Diego, Santa Clara faced a 40-31 deficit at the half. The Broncos rallied on a 49-35 second-half run and took the win 80-75. Brandin Podziemski was the team’s top scorer on 20 points and nine rebounds.

I’ll stick with Santa Clara here. This one’s tricky though, and it should be a fun matchup. The Broncos have rebounded well from their three-game losing streak earlier this month, and they’ve notched a combined 163 points in their last two outings. LMU is rolling right along as well; they’ve hit 68 or more points in six of their last seven games. The Lions are fresh off an excellent win over a great Saint Mary’s team so it may be tough to avoid the proverbial hangover in a road game two days later. That said, this one could easily go either way. Should be a good game.
