Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

It’s been a choppy run overall in the record books for the Hokies so far, and they’re currently sitting below the .500 mark overall. Virginia Tech opened on a 5-8 run through their first 13 outings, beating only Delaware State, USC Upstate, Winthrop, North Carolina A&T, and Navy among losses to Penn State, Jacksonville, Michigan, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Pitt, Saint Joseph’s and Duke. A 3-4 run came next with wins over Miami, Cal, and NC State among losses to Stanford, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, and Clemson. Since then it’s been a 3-2 run over the last five outings with wins over Florida State, Virginia, and Notre Dame. The losses otherwise have come versus SMU and Virginia. That gives Virginia Tech an 11-14 overall run through their first 25 games of the 2024-25 campaign.

In their Saturday matchup with Virginia, the Hokies were down by seven points heading into the second half. Virginia Tech got better from there on a 37-33 run but ended up taking the loss at the end 73-70. Leading the team in the defeat was Tobi Lawal with his 23 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Ben Hammond added 11 points with three assists in 26 minutes as the only other player on the team to finish in double-figures. Tyler Johnson got close though, putting up nine points with four boards and a pair of steals in the loss.

Boston College Eagles Betting Preview

Over on the Boston College side, they weren’t looking too bad heading into the 2025 calendar year, but since then it’s been a pretty ugly run. The Eagles went 9-5 over their first 14 games, losing to VCU, Dartmouth, South Carolina, Wake Forest and SMU. The wins otherwise were over the Citadel, Temple, Loyola MD, Old Dominion, Missouri State, Boise State, Stonehill, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Miami during that time. Since then Boston College has just one win versus Florida State on February 1. Otherwise, it’s been losses to Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Louisville, Syracuse, Notre Dame, and NC State. That gives the Eagles a 10-15 overall run through their first 25 outings of the season.

Matched up against NC State on Saturday, the Eagles came out of the locker room facing a 44-29 deficit. Boston College got better from there on a 33-26 run but ended up losing in the end 70-62. Tops in scoring was Donald Hand with 22 points, six rebounds, and three turnovers in 35 minutes of work. Chad Venning added 14 points with eight rebounds and one steal with one block. Chas Kelley put up 10 points, four assists, and two rebounds off the bench as well.

Why the Boston College Eagles will win

Boston College vs Virginia Tech Prediction

I’ll lean toward Virginia Tech I suppose. The Hokies are coming off a home loss to a middling Virginia team though, despite hitting 46 percent from the field and staying pretty competitive on the boards. Virginia Tech coughed up 10 turnovers for 17 Cavaliers points though, which is what really buried them in the defeat. The good news is that Virginia Tech is still scoring pretty well these days; they’ve got 70 or more points in four of the last five outings—a 3-2 run.

As for Boston College, they never really got going in their latest loss to NC State, notching a rough 35.4 percent shooting and 16 turnovers for 15 Wolfpack points. That makes four straight losses for the Eagles, but they’ve been competitive in a couple of those. Still, I don’t think they’ll power past Virginia Tech.

Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview

Virginia posted a fairly decent record through the end of the calendar year. That said, the Cavs haven’t done so well in 2025 just yet. In their first 13 outings of the season Virginia went 8-5 overall. The losses were versus Tennessee, St. John’s, Florida, SMU and Memphis. Otherwise it was wins over Campbell, Coppin State, Villanova, Manhattan, Holy Cross, Bethune-Cookman, American U and NC State in that time. Following losses to Louisville, California, Stanford, SMU and Louisville, the Cavaliers hit a much better 4-2 run. Those losses came versus Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. The victories were over Boston College, Miami, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech. The result so far has been an even .500 run at 12-12 through the Cavs’ first 24 outings.

In the Georgia Tech game over the weekend, the Cavaliers went into the locker room with a 41-36 edge. Following a 34-25 second half Virginia came away with a 75-61 win in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Isaac McKneely with 20 points and two assists in 32 minutes of action. Dai Dai Ames added 18 points with four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in 30 minutes. Blake Buchanan hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds with four assists, one steal, one block and seven points as well. Anthony Robinson added six points off the bench.

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they’ve had a few good runs of play this year. Overall however, the team has struggled at staying around the .500 mark in the record column. Leading the team in scoring was Tobi Lawal, who notched a double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, one assist and a pair of blocks. Brandon Rechsteiner came off the bench to add 12 points with three assists and one rebound. Ben Burnham had 10 bench points with four rebounds and one assist, and Tyler Johnson chipped in with nine points and a pair of boards.

Virginia Tech vs Virginia Prediction

I’ll stick with Virginia. The Cavaliers have been playing better lately, and they’re coming off a pretty solid home win over Georgia Tech. In that one Virginia shot 49.2 percent from the field and 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from 3-point range while collecting a 38-24 rebounding advantage. The eight turnovers were a nice touch as well. That gives the Cavaliers consecutive wins for the first time since late December, and they’ve scored 73 or more points in four straight games now (a 3-1 run).

The lone loss in that stretch came to the Hokies in a 75-74 home defeat on February 1. Virginia didn’t play badly in that one, but did give up 52.1 percent shooting from the field. The Cavs need to clamp down on defense in the road rematch, but I think they can power one out.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Preview

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are 10-12 (4-7) this season after they lost to Florida State by a score of 67-60 in their last game. I’m on SMU here. I know Virginia Tech’s coming home off of back-to-back road wins, but I just don’t see the Hokies having the horses to hang with the Mustangs for a full 40 minutes at SMU’s pace. The Mustangs are a solid lineup that does a lot of things really well and they’re also really good at pushing the pace and making teams uncomfortable that aren’t equipped to make that change of pace and I don’t think that Virginia Tech can either. I’ll side with SMU in this one, laying the points on the road here.

The Florida State Seminoles aren’t good enough to lay these sorts of numbers, but I can’t bring myself to side with Virginia Tech. The Virginia Tech Hokies have lost six of their last nine games, and they don’t have the offense to inspire bettors. Virginia Tech has scored 64 or fewer points in each of its last three games. I doubt this is a breakout game against a Florida State defense that has a top-50 defensive field goal percentage. Oddsmakers are telling you what they think of Virginia Tech by making Florida State a double-digit favorite. Don’t love it, but if forced to pick, give me Florida State in a comfortable home win on Wednesday night.

Clemson Tigers Betting Preview

The Tigers have been a model of consistent play so far this year. Clemson has rattled off an impressive record through their first 20 outings, with only one instance of consecutive losses in the books. The Tigers opened up with a 9-1 stretch featuring only a loss to Boise State on November 17. Otherwise it was wins over Charleston Southern, St. Francis PA, Eastern Kentucky, Radford, San Francisco, Penn State, Florida A&M, Kentucky and Miami in that time. Clemson would then lose to Memphis and South Carolina in the next two games, but got back to their winning ways quickly with victories over Wake Forest, Stanford and California in the next trio of outings. Clemson then fell to Louisville ahead of four more wins. That quartet of victories came versus Florida State, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, giving Clemson an overall record of 16-4 through the first 10 games of the 2024-25 season so far.

In their Wednesday matchup with Syracuse, the Tigers came out of the break looking up at a 48-29 advantage on the scoreboard. Clemson got outscored 43-38 the rest of the way but held on for the double-digit win 86-72 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Chase Hunter with 23 points, one rebound, one assist and three steals. Viktor Lakhin doubled up on 16 points with 10 rebounds and two assists, while Jaeden Zackery added 14 points with five assists and two steals. Del Jones was tops off the bench with his nine points and four boards.

Over on the Hokies’ side, their year kicked off with a few wins, then came a rough losing stretch. Virginia Tech was able to right the ship somewhat in December, but it’s been a choppy run since then. I’ll lean toward Clemson. The Tigers didn’t have a ton of issues versus Syracuse in their last outing—despite giving up 53.8 percent shooting from the field. Clemson shot a nice 56.4 percent themselves, along with a 28-24 rebounding edge and 19 points off 14 Orange turnovers. Clemson has scored 70 or more points in four straight games now (all wins) and 70 or more points in each of their last seven wins during this 7-1 stretch.

As for Virginia Tech, they shot a meager 37.3 percent from the field in their loss to Georgia Tech while coughing up 17 turnovers for 20 Yellow Jackets points. The Hokies did have a good night on the boards though, posting a 39-29 advantage in that department. Virginia Tech has just 127 combined points over their last two games, and fewer than 66 in every loss so far this year. If Clemson can put the clamps down on defense, the Tigers should have a clear road to a dominant performance here.

Virginia Tech is averaging 70.4 points while their defense is giving up 73.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 279th in the league while the defense is ranked 237th. They are averaging 55.83 field goals attempted per game which is 312th. Tobi Lawal is averaging 12.4 points while shooting 62.3 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from behind the three-point line. Virginia Tech will take on Clemson after this game.

Georgia Tech is Struggling

Georgia Tech is struggling heading into this game and they have lost four games in a row. Georgia Tech in the last game faced off against Florida State and they scored 78 points but the defense gave up 91 points. Lance Terry put up 23 points, two rebounds, and one assist. They shot 43.3 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Georgia Tech is averaging 74.9 points while their defense is giving up 73.9 points per game. The offense is ranked 185th in the league while the defense is ranked 257th in the league. They are averaging 60.95 field goals attempted per game which is 92nd in the league. Guard Lance Terry is averaging 15.8 points while shooting 56.8 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from behind the three-point line.

NC State Continues to be in Close Games

NC State has continued to play in close games and it has been mixed results. Two games ago against Notre Dame, NC State was able to secure a 66-65 victory but in the last game against North Carolina, they ended up losing 63-61. Against North Carolina, they were down 26-20 at halftime, and in the second half they scored 41 points, but they still ended up falling just short. Guard Marcus Hill put up 20 points, nine rebounds, and one assist.

Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview

The Hurricanes opened the season on a nice run and everything was looking pretty good after three games. Miami took out Fairleigh Dickinson, Binghamton, and Coppin State in that trio. The wheels fell off after that, however, and the Hurricanes would hit a losing streak in the next seven outings versus Drake, Oklahoma State, VCU, Charleston Southern, Arkansas, Clemson, and Tennessee. Miami recovered—finally—with a win over Presbyterian on December 15, but then promptly lost their next two games versus Mount St. Mary’s and Boston College.

In the Boston College game on New Year’s Day, the Hurricanes came out of halftime holding a promising 41-29 edge. Miami didn’t stay on top much longer though: the second half was a 49-27 deficit and the Hurricanes ended up losing 78-68 in the end. Leading the team in scoring during the futile effort was Matthew Cleveland with 21 points, six rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Lynn Kidd added 14 points with eight rebounds and three assists. Topping the bench players was Paul Djobet with his 10 points, one rebound, and two steals in 20 minutes.

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they’ve followed a similar trajectory so far this year in a 5-8 start. The first three games were all victories, as the Hokies dispatched Delaware State, South Carolina Upstate, and Winthrop. A string of six straight losses followed, however. Those defeats came courtesy of Penn State, Jacksonville, Michigan, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Pittsburgh in succession. The Hokies would recover on a couple of victories over North Carolina A&T and Navy, but they’ve since fallen to Saint Joseph’s and Duke in their last pair.

Matched up against Duke on New Year’s Eve, the Hokies came out of the locker room looking at a 37-27 deficit on the scoreboard. Virginia Tech limped through the second half on a 51-38 run and lost 88-65 in the end. Tops in scoring was Tobi Lawal with 19 points and five rebounds with four turnovers in 22 minutes. The only other Virginia Tech player in double-figures was Patrick Wessler, who came off the bench to provide 10 points and two rebounds with one steal. Ben Burnham added nine points and one assist off the bench, while Mylyjael Poteat put up six points with two rebounds and one assist in 17 minutes of work as the next-highest starter.

Virginia Tech vs Miami Prediction

I’ll stick with Virginia Tech I suppose. Frankly, there’s not a lot to get excited about in this game considering both teams are struggling and fans are already looking forward to next season. In any case, Virginia Tech will need a much better statistical effort than they got against a good Duke team in their last game. The Hokies shot well in that one (46 percent) but also got out-rebounded 35-22 and coughed up 12 turnovers for 18 Blue Devils points. Allowing 53.4 percent shooting on the other side didn’t help matters, either.

Virginia Tech has had some major issues putting up points this year. They’ve been below 66 points in nine of their 13 games so far. That said, the Hokies have also scored well in their wins; they’ve got 80 or more in four of those five games.

As for Miami, they shot just 39.7 percent from the field in their last game versus a decent Boston College team. The Hurricanes were outmuscled on the boards 40-33 and had 11 turnovers for 11 Eagles points. On defense, Miami gave up 46.4 percent shooting in the 10-point defeat. Miami has been below 69 points in three of their last five games, so I don’t see them posting a huge total here either. I’ll stay with the Hokies, but in reality, I’m probably not touching it.

Duke Blue Devils Betting Preview

The Duke Blue Devils are 10-2 (2-0) this year after they defeated Georgia Tech by a score of 82-56 in their last game. Duke is shooting 46.4% from the field, 73.4% on free throws, and 35.4% on three-pointers this year.

Duke comes into this matchup with a 10-2 record to start the season and they are ranked #4 in the nation. The Blue Devils only have losses against Kentucky and Kansas, while picking up wins against Arizona and Auburn. Virginia Tech is just 5-7 on the year and they were just blown out by St. Joe’s at home. The Hokies have lost seven of their last nine games, with six of those losses coming by double digits. 

Duke’s offense has been pretty average to start the season, but their defense has been very good, as they are allowing 58.5 points per game. The Blue Devils have allowed 56 points or fewer in three straight games and will face a VT team that is shooting just 42.9% from the field. Virginia Tech has struggled at both ends of the court and I can’t trust them after losing by 20 at home to St. Joe’s. Take Duke here.

Minnesota Looks to Finish Season Strong

There weren’t many expectations surrounding this Minnesota team but if they are to win this game they will finish with eight wins. The Gophers last game came against the Wisconsin Badgers, and they scored 24 points but even more impressive was the defense giving up only seven points and that was enough for the victory. Max Brosmer completed 17 of his 26 passes for 191 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Darius Taylor had a huge game on the ground rushing 32 times for 143 yards. 

The Gophers have been busy bringing in transfers, and next year’s team looks good, but this is a chance for Brosmer to finish his college career with a victory. On the season, Brosmer has thrown for 2,617 yards, 17 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Gophers on the season is averaging 26.3 points while their defense is giving up 17.5 points per game. In this game the Gophers are going to need the defense to step up in a big way. 

Plenty of Opt Out’s for Virginia Tech

There have been plenty of opt outs for Virginia Tech for this bowl game and that could really hurt their chances in this game. Virginia Tech currently has 24 players in the transfer portal and there has to be a major concern about depth heading into this game. Virginia Tech’s last game came against Virginia and they were impressive scoring 37 points on the way to the 20 point victory. 

William Watson III had a strong game completing 14 of his 21 passes for 254 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions. The good news for Virginia Tech is Kyron Drones and Pop Watson who started the last game at quarterback are both back. The Hokies are averaging 29.7 points while their defense is giving up 22.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 53rd while the defense is ranked 40th. 

Virginia Tech vs Minnesota Prediction

Minnesota is going to have little issues getting the job done in this game. Virginia Tech has so many opts out, and they are going to really struggle here. This Gophers defense is often overlooked, but they are going to step up in a big way again here. North Carolina A&T Aggies Betting Preview

The Aggies started out the year on a 3-2 run with losses to only Wake Forest and George Washington. Since then North Carolina A&T has lost four straight, falling to Buffalo, East Carolina, Hampton, and UNC Greensboro.

I’ll lean toward Virginia Tech. I’m also not touching this one in reality though; neither team has looked great lately. That said, the Hokies contained a good Pitt team quite well in their last outing, giving up just 41.1 percent shooting from the field and holding a near-equal 31-30 rebounding disadvantage. The major wrench in VA Tech’s plans during that game was the 17 turnovers—leading to 17 Panthers points. The Hokies have been below 65 points in seven straight games, so they’ve got to keep a lid on their opponents’ scoring in order to compete (and cover the spreads).

As for North Carolina A&T, they’ve been below 70 points in two of the last three games and are giving up some pretty healthy scoring totals on the other side. This is a great opportunity for the Hokies to break that losing streak, but it’s a thick line for a team that doesn’t tend to score well.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

The Hokies got off to a good start this year, posting wins in their first three games over Delaware State, USC Upstate, and Winthrop. It’s been three straight losses since then, however, as Virginia Tech has dropped to Penn State, Jacksonville, and Michigan.

In the Wolverines game on Monday, the Hokies went into the break with a 34-33 deficit. Virginia Tech didn’t end up closing the gap in an eventual loss of 75-63. Toibu Lawal posted 14 points to lead the team in the losing effort, and Jaydon Young added 12 points.

South Carolina Gamecocks Betting Preview

Over on the South Carolina side, they hit a 2-1 run in their first trio with a loss to North Florida before wins over SC State and Towson. It’s been a 1-2 stretch in the last three with a win over Mercer in between losses to Indiana and Xavier, however.

In their matchup with Xavier on Monday, the Gamecocks held a five-point edge by the second half. South Carolina was outpaced 46-32 from there, however, and lost 75-66. Collin Murray-Boyles was tops on 13 points with six rebounds in the losing effort.

South Carolina vs Virginia Tech Prediction

I’ll lean toward South Carolina here. The Gamecocks opened up well against a great Xavier team in their last outing but eventually shot a tepid 42.6 percent from the field and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point range alongside a 41-31 rebounding deficit and 12 turnovers. That said, South Carolina has really only lost one “winnable” game (the opener versus North Florida) and they haven’t really been blown out aside from the 87-71 loss to Indiana. The Gamecocks are better than their record may indicate.

As for Virginia Tech, they shot just 34.5 percent from the field and 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point range alongside 19 turnovers in their last matchup with Michigan. The Hokies have been below 65 points in four straight games (a 1-3 stretch) and given up 74 or more points in each of the last three. If the Gamecocks can sustain any kind of offense here the cover should be within reach.
