Minnesota Keeps Fighting

Minnesota hasn’t had the best season, but they have kept fighting, and have had a couple of surprising wins. On Saturday, the Golden Gophers went on the road, and they were able to knock off the USC Trojans 69-66. At halftime, they were down 38-29, but they fought back in the second half and were able to win. Minnesota shot 43.9 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from behind the three-point line. Lu’Cye Patterson has been playing really well, and he scored 25 points, three rebounds, and two assists. The most impressive part of the win was that Dawson Garcia, Minnesota’s best player had only seven points. 

Minnesota sits with a 12-12 record overall and they have gone 7-15-2 against the spread. Away from home this season they have gone 2-4 straight up. The Gophers are averaging 69 points while their defense is giving up 69.6 points per game. The offense is ranked 300th in the league while the defense is ranked 112th. UCLA Coming Off Solid Win

UCLA, two games ago against Illinois, was knocked off, but they bounced back in a big way in the last game. UCLA faced off against Indiana on the road and they scored 72 points on the way to the four-point victory. In the second half, the defense gave up 43 points, but they still held on for the win. Tyler Bildeau had a strong game putting up 12 points, five rebounds, and two assists. There were three different players that put up at least 10 points. In this game, UCLA is going to need to have a balanced attack. 

UCLA comes into this game with an 18-7 record overall and they have gone 14-10-1 against the spread. At home this season they have gone 13-1 straight up. UCLA is averaging 75.5 points while their defense is giving up 64.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 138th in the league while the defense is ranked 23rd. Tyler Bilodeau is averaging 14.2 points while shooting 50 percent from the field. UCLA will take on Ohio State and Purdue after this game.

Illinois Can’t Lose This Game

Illinois, at times, looks like a National Championship contender, and in other games, they are losing to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights like in the last game. At halftime against Rutgers in the last game they were down 37-29 and even though they scored 44 points, it wasn’t enough as they fell short. Will Riley had a strong game putting up 20 points, five assists, and three rebounds, while Ben Humrichos also added 114 points and five rebounds. Two games ago, Ohio State scored 79 points against Illinois, but Illinois scored 87 points, which led to the eight-point victory. 

Illinois comes into this game with a 15-8 record overall and they have gone 11-11-1 against the spread. The over has hit in 12 of the games. Away from home this season, straight up they are 3-4. Washington Huskies Betting Preview

The Huskies opened their year on a pretty solid run. Since the calendar flipped to the new year however, they’ve had trouble finding wins. Washington started out on a 6-1 stretch, losing to only Nevada amid wins over UC Davis, Seattle Pacific, UMass Lowell, Alcorn State, Colorado State and Santa Clara otherwise. A 4-3 stretch came after that, with losses to UCLA, USC and Seattle U amid wins over Eastern Washington, Washington State, NJIT and Maryland. Since then it’s been a string of six straight losses for the Huskies. They’ve fallen to Illinois, Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, Oregon and UCLA during a tough run. The result in the record column so far has been a 10-10 overall run through 20 games for Washington.

In their matchup last Friday versus UCLA, the Huskies held a 36-32 deficit by the end of the first half. Washington didn’t end up gaining any ground in the second on a 29-28 deficit and lost the game 65-60 in the end. The team’s only double-digit scorer was Great Osobor with 19 points, nine rebounds, one steal and one block. Zoom Diallo added eight points with four rebounds and a pair of assists, while Tyree Ihenacho came off the bench for eight points, one rebound and one assist in 21 minutes of work on the floor.

Over on the Minnesota side, they’ve had some solid runs of play this year—and also some rough stretches. The Gophers have barely been able to keep their heads above the .500 mark so far this season. Minnesota took out Oral Roberts, Omaha, Yale, Cleveland State and Central Michigan (with a loss to North Texas) during a 5-1 start. A 3-4 run came next with losses to Wichita State, Wake Forest, Michigan State and Indiana amid wins over Bethune-Cookman, Fairleigh Dickinson and Morgan State otherwise. n their Tuesday matchup with Michigan State, the Gophers went into the second half limping after a rough 36-16 deficit. Minnesota got better in the second but didn’t get any closer on a 37-35 run for a 73-51 defeat in the end. Dawson Garcia was the team’s only scorer to reach double figures with 21 points, five rebounds, one assist and one block. Mike Mitchell (one rebound) and Lu’Cye Patterson (four assists) each notched eight points, and Isaac Asuma had eight points with three rebounds and two steals in 21 minutes of work off the bench.

Minnesota vs Washington Prediction

I’ll stay with Washington. You could probably call this one either way, though. Both teams could use a victory. The Huskies are coming off a sloppy loss to a pretty good UCLA team, posting 14 turnovers for 15 Bruins points. Washington didn’t shoot very well in that one (41.5 percent) and had a tepid eight team assists during the five-point defeat. The Huskies have scored fewer than 59 points in three of their last five games, and they’ve given up 81 or more points in four of the last six. As for Minnesota, they were demolished on the boards 40-22 in a road loss to Michigan State in their last game, shooting a tepid 41.2 percent along the way. The Gophers had scored 72 or more points in three straight wins prior to that however, so they should match up well here. I like Washington to power one out in a close overall game.

Michigan State Can’t Overlook This Game 

Michigan State can’t overlook this game because if they do, this is a game they would lose, not something that seemed possible a couple of years ago. In the last game against Rutgers, Michigan State scored 81 points and that was enough for the victory. Michigan State shot 48.2 percent from the field but only 26.3 percent from behind the three-point line. Jase Richardson had a strong game putting up 20 points, four rebounds, and one assist. They are averaging 58.59 goals per game which is 129th in the league. Jaden Atkins is averaging 13.8 points while shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 28.7 percent from behind the three-point line.

This Minnesota team still isn’t making the tournament, but they have a whole lot of confidence right now. After such a slow start to Big Ten play they all of a sudden have won three games in a row. Two games ago against Iowa they won 72-67 and in the last game against Oregon, they won 77-69. In the last game against Oregon Dawson Garcia had a huge game putting up 31 points, six rebounds, and two assists. There were four different players that put up at least 10 points on the way to the win.

Oregon can’t overlook this game because if they do, they will have a bad loss here. On Tuesday, Oregon scored 82 points and they ended up winning by 11 points. Michigan Wolverines Betting Preview

The Wolverines have had quite a steady season so far, with only one instance of consecutive losses. Michigan went a nice 8-1 over their first nine games. The one defeat in that time was Wake Forest. Otherwise, it was wins over Cleveland State, TCU, Miami Ohio, Tarleton State, Virginia Tech, Xavier, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Following those consecutive defeats versus Arkansas and Oklahoma, the Wolverines have since taken five straight wins over Fort Wayne, Western Kentucky, USC, UCLA, and Washington for a nice 13-3 overall run through 16 games.

In the Washington matchup back on Sunday, the Wolverines came out of halftime sporting a 48-38 edge. Michigan kept it going from there, rolling to a 91-75 win after a 43-37 second half. Tops in scoring was Vladislav Goldin with 19 points, seven boards, and three assists. Nimari Burnett added 16 points with three assists and two rebounds, while Roddy Gayle put up 15 points and four rebounds with 7-of-7 from the line. Coming off the bench to chip in 12 points with one rebound in 16 minutes of work was Sam Walters. Danny Wolf also finished in double-figures with 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four turnovers in 25 minutes.

Over on the Gophers’ side, they kicked off the 2024-25 season on a nice run, but they’ve since struggled during some pretty tough matchups starting in late November. Following two more wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Morgan State, the Gophers have since lost four straight versus Purdue, Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Maryland, resulting in an 8-9 overall record through 17 games so far this season.

Matched up against Maryland on Monday, the Golden Gophers held a 35-32 advantage by the second half. Minnesota was overtaken on a 45-36 run the rest of the way however, taking a 77-71 loss in the end. Leading the way in the defeat was Dawson Garcia with his 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Lu’Cye Patterson added 15 points with five boards and three assists, and Isaac Asuma put up 15 bench points with two rebounds in 32 minutes of work. Frank Mitchell chipped in a bucket in 12 minutes off the bench as well.

Minnesota vs Michigan Prediction

I’m going to stay with Michigan. The Wolverines didn’t have too many issues taking care of a decent Washington team in their last outing, posting a nice 52.7 percent shooting from the field with 36 rebounds and 19 team assists. There are a couple of things to clean up from that win however, namely the 11 turnovers and the spotty 22-of-32 (68.8 percent) from the free-throw line. That said, Michigan is looking good during this five-game win streak. They’ve hit 85 or more points in each of those outings, and they’ve got 85 or more points in eight straight games overall (a 6-2 run).

As for Minnesota, they shot a tepid 41.5 percent from the field with 16 turnovers for 15 Terrapins points in their loss to Maryland. The Golden Gophers have 71 or more points in two of their last four games (all losses) but it’s worth noting that one of those went to double overtime. Minnesota will certainly have their hands full here, and if Michigan plays to their capabilities I like the Wolverines to power it out in the end.

Minnesota is Awful

There is no other way to put it, this Minnesota team is awful, and this is a team that could easily lose, and it wouldn’t be all that shocking. Two games ago against Ohio State, they ended up losing in double overtime by a point. In the last game against the Wisconsin Badgers, Minnesota scored 59 points while their defense gave up 80 points and that led to the defeat. At halftime, they were down by only a point, but in the second half the defense gave up 50 points, and that led to the defeat. Minnesota as a team shot 38.6 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from behind the three-point line.

Minnesota is averaging 68.2 points per game while the defense is giving up 67.5 points per game. The offense is ranked 321st in the league while the defense is ranked 76th. They are averaging 15.7 assists per game. This is a team that has had some awful second half and in this one game, they need to try and play a complete game. Dawson Garcia has been the top player for Minnesota averaging 18.4 points while shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from behind the three-point line.

What a Win for Maryland

Maryland had lost two games in a row, but they are coming off quite the victory in the last game. Maryland faced off against UCLA and the defense gave up only 61 points while the offense scored 79 points. Ja’Kobi Gillespie had a strong game putting up 27 points, four rebounds, and one assist. There were three different players that paced the team on the way to the victory.

Maryland is averaging 85.1 points while their defense is giving up 63.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 14th in the league while the defense is ranked 20th. The offense is ranked 16th in the league while the defense is ranked 20th. They are averaging 1.58 assists per game which is 80th in the league. Center Derik Queen is averaging 15.5 points while shooting 55.5 percent from the field.

Wisconsin Badgers Betting Preview

The Wisconsin Badgers are 12-3 (2-2) this year after they defeated Rutgers by a score of 75-63 in their last game. Wisconsin has won four games in a row and they are scoring over 83 points per game this year. The Badgers have had some issues on defense this season, but they did hold Rutgers to just 63 points in their last game. Ohio State Buckeyes Betting Preview

The Buckeyes got their season started with a nice run over the first six games. The only loss in that span came to a good Texas A&M team. Otherwise, Ohio State took wins over Texas, Youngstown State, Evansville, Campbell, and Green Bay. A rough 1-3 stretch ensued after that for the Buckeyes, though. The lone win in that time came versus Rutgers. Otherwise, it was losses to Pittsburgh, Maryland, and Auburn. Following a three-game win streak over Valparaiso, Kentucky, and Indiana State in succession, the Buckeyes fell in their most recent outing versus Michigan State for a 9-5 record thus far on the season.

In the Michigan State matchup back on Friday, the Buckeyes were looking at a 37-29 deficit on the scoreboard following the first half. Ohio State did get slightly better from there but it wasn’t enough. The Buckeyes notched a 33-32 second-half run for a 69-62 defeat in the end. Leading the team in scoring during the loss was Micah Parrish with 13 points, two rebounds, and a steal. Also in double-figures was Bruce Thornton with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals alongside five turnovers (a team-high). Leading the team off the bench was Ques Glover, who contributed nine points, four rebounds, and one assist in 24 minutes. Ohio State will meet Oregon and Wisconsin after this game.

Over on the Minnesota side, they also opened on a solid run over their first half-dozen outings. The Gophers similarly went 5-1 in that stretch, taking a lone three-point loss to North Texas on November 13. Otherwise, it was wins over Oral Roberts, Omaha, Yale, Cleveland State, and Central Michigan at that time. Minnesota hit a 1-4 stretch in the next five games during a tough run, however. In that time the Gophers beat Bethune-Cookman and otherwise fell to Wichita State, Wake Forest, Michigan State, and Indiana. Minnesota would get back on track with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Morgan State prior to a huge loss versus Purdue.

Matched up against the Boilermakers in their Thursday game, the Golden Gophers were trailing by a very modest 28-27 deficit by halftime. Minnesota lost their footing completely in the second half however, falling behind on a 53-34 deficit and eventually losing big 81-61. Dawson Garcia was the team’s top scorer with 20 points, five rebounds and two assists alongside a lone block. Lu’Cye Patterson added 14 points with eight boards and three assists in 32 minutes. Tops off the bench was Isaac Asuma with seven points, four boards and two assists with one steal in 24 minutes on the court.

Minnesota vs Ohio State Prediction

I’m going to stick with Ohio State, but this should be a pretty interesting matchup. The Buckeyes certainly need a bounce-back effort here as well following a pretty limp offensive showing against a good Michigan State team. Ohio State shot just 36.7 percent from the field in that defeat, with 7-of-27 (25.9 percent) from outside and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the line. The 16 turnovers for 18 Spartans points were the real killer in that loss, though. The good news is that Ohio State had posted 85 or more points in three straight games (all wins) prior to that, and the odds are good that the Buckeyes will be able to post a decent showing here.

As for Minnesota, they were able to hang around with Purdue initially during their last outing but lost steam in the second. The Gophers shot well from the field (48.1 percent) but also gave up 50 percent on the other side. Minnesota has given up 81 or more points in each of their last three losses, so if Ohio State can get the scoring going early here the Buckeyes will be in great shape.

Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview

The Boilermakers’ season got off to a pretty promising start. Purdue opened with seven wins in their first eight games, losing to only Marquette on November 19. Otherwise, it was victories over Texas A&M-CC, Northern Kentucky, Yale, Alabama, Marshall, NC State, and Ole Miss during that time. It’s been a pretty spotty run over the last five games for Purdue, though. In that time the Boilermakers have gone just 2-3, taking wins over Maryland and Toledo alongside losses to Penn State, Texas A&M, and Auburn.

On Sunday in the Toledo matchup, the Boilermakers came out of halftime sporting a 39-28 edge. Purdue kept it rolling in the second on a 44-36 run and took the victory 83-64 in the end. Braden Smith was the team’s top scorer with 34 points, 12 assists, four rebounds and three steals. Trey Kaufman-Renn added 23 points with six rebounds and a pair of assists, while Fletcher Loyer had 17 points, three assists and three rebounds.

This year Purdue’s Kaufman-Renn is the leading scorer. He’s got 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game in 13 appearances. Smith is second with 14.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, and a team-high 8.6 assists per game. Loyer is sitting at 13.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

Over on the Gophers’ side, they managed a 5-1 run in their first half-dozen outings. Minnesota dispatched Oral Roberts, Omaha, Yale, Cleveland State, and Central Michigan in that time with a lone loss to North Texas. It’s been a struggle for the Gophers since then, however. Over their last seven games, they’re just 3-4. Minnesota’s losses in that span have been versus Wichita State, Wake Forest, Michigan State, and Indiana. The wins otherwise came courtesy of Bethune-Cookman, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Morgan State.

In the Morgan State game on Sunday, the Gophers were in control coming out of the first half with a 55-37 edge. Minnesota kept the pressure on in the second with a 35-31 run and took the eventual victory 90-68. Mike Mitchell led the team with 22 points and five rebounds. Dawson Garcia added 18 points with eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal, while Frank Mitchell came off the bench for 10 points and four rebounds.

Topping the team in scoring so far this year is Garcia. He’s got 19.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game to go along with his 2.0 assists. Mitchell is also in double-figures, making a big impact in six appearances. He’s sitting at 13.3 points and 3.7 assists per game.

Minnesota vs Purdue Prediction

I’ll stick with Purdue here, but you could make a case either way. The Boilermakers didn’t have a whole lot of issues versus a middling Toledo team in their last matchup. Purdue hit 49.2 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from 3-point range in that one, scoring 13 points off 14 Rockets turnovers. The one major statistical blemish was Purdue’s rebounding deficit of 40-33 (17-13 offensive) but it wasn’t enough to squash the momentum.

Prior to that win over Toledo, Purdue had a couple of losses versus tough teams in Texas A&M and Auburn. One was close (70-66 versus Texas A&M); one was not (87-69 versus the Tigers). Prior to those games, the Boilermakers had scored 70 or more points in all but one appearance (58 versus Marquette) this season. Purdue will be in good shape if they can make that threshold here.

As for the Gophers, they shot a nice 51.7 percent from the field in the win over Morgan State. Minnesota has managed 72 or more points in four of the last five games, so Purdue is going to have to hit the gas in order to keep a cover pace. It’ll be a fun game to watch.

Minnesota Looks to Finish Season Strong

There weren’t many expectations surrounding this Minnesota team but if they are to win this game they will finish with eight wins. The Gophers last game came against the Wisconsin Badgers, and they scored 24 points but even more impressive was the defense giving up only seven points and that was enough for the victory. Max Brosmer completed 17 of his 26 passes for 191 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Darius Taylor had a huge game on the ground rushing 32 times for 143 yards. 

The Gophers have been busy bringing in transfers, and next year’s team looks good, but this is a chance for Brosmer to finish his college career with a victory. On the season, Brosmer has thrown for 2,617 yards, 17 touchdowns, and five interceptions. The Gophers on the season is averaging 26.3 points while their defense is giving up 17.5 points per game. In this game the Gophers are going to need the defense to step up in a big way. 

Plenty of Opt Out’s for Virginia Tech

There have been plenty of opt outs for Virginia Tech for this bowl game and that could really hurt their chances in this game. Virginia Tech currently has 24 players in the transfer portal and there has to be a major concern about depth heading into this game. Virginia Tech’s last game came against Virginia and they were impressive scoring 37 points on the way to the 20 point victory. 

William Watson III had a strong game completing 14 of his 21 passes for 254 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions. The good news for Virginia Tech is Kyron Drones and Pop Watson who started the last game at quarterback are both back. The Hokies are averaging 29.7 points while their defense is giving up 22.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 53rd while the defense is ranked 40th. 

Virginia Tech vs Minnesota Prediction

Minnesota is going to have little issues getting the job done in this game. Virginia Tech has so many opts out, and they are going to really struggle here. This Gophers defense is often overlooked, but they are going to step up in a big way again here. The Gophers are going to get a strong game from Brosmer, and that will be enough for Minnesota to get the job done. Back the Gophers against the spread.

Indiana Has Confidence

Indiana has a ton of confidence right now and they have expectations of success again here. Malik Reneau had a strong game, putting up 19 points, seven rebounds, and an assist. There were four different players that put up at least 13 points. The Hoosiers are averaging 80.2 points while their defense is giving up 69.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 91st in the league while the defense is ranked 139th. Malik Reneau is averaging 15.9 points while shooting 58.9 percent from the field.

They allowed the Spartans to shoot 52.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the three-point line. Dawson Garcia had a strong game putting up 18 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists. There were three different players that put up at least 10 points. The Gophers on the season are averaging 65.2 points while their defense is giving up 62 points per game. Overall this season the defense has been fine, but the offense just hasn’t been good enough for this team. 

Indiana vs Minnesota Prediction

This game is going to be a blowout victory by Indiana. Indiana is averaging 80.2 points and they are going to have no issue running up the score here. The Gophers are averaging 65.2 points per game and their offense isn’t going to be good enough here. Their defense is going to really struggle here, and that will be the difference here as Indiana is going to cruise here. Back the Hoosiers against the spread.

The Spartans have struggled with shooting three-pointers, but they are still scoring over 80 points per game. Bethune-Cookman Wildcats Betting Preview

The Wildcats’ season got kicked off with three straight losses to Texas Tech, Nebraska, and Fort Wayne. Bethune-Cookman has since gone 2-2 with wins over South Carolina State and North Dakota among losses to Tulane and Gardner-Webb.

In the Gardner-Webb matchup on Wednesday, the Wildcats came out of the break with a 43-28 deficit. Bethune-Cookman kept the pace from there in a 79-64 defeat. Reggie Ward doubled up on 14 points and 11 boards, while Daniel Rouzan had 14 points in the losing effort.

The Gophers’ big disparity in that one was a 42-27 rebounding deficit (13-8 offensive), along with a 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) success rate from 3-point range. Minnesota has been below 69 points in seven straight games; they’ve got to rely on defense to be successful these days.

Wisconsin just needs it more here and while normally that’s not enough for me for a bet, they have the talent to follow through and I think it does here. Give me Wisconsin.
