Penn State just keeps falling off and they just keep losing games. Two games ago against USC, they lost 92-67 and in the last game against Washington, they lost 75-73. At halftime against Washington, they were winning, but in the second half, they gave up 41 points, and that led to the defeat. Adrian Baldwin Jr put up 20 points, eight assists, and two rebounds. Penn State shot 40.3 percent from the field and 32.1 percent from behind the three-point line. Penn State needs to play a more complete game. 

Penn State currently sits with a 13-13 record overall and they have gone 11-15 against the spread. Penn State is averaging 79.5 points while their defense is giving up 73.5 points per game. The offense is ranked 58th in the league while the defense is ranked 240th in the league. Ace Baldwin Jr has been the top player for Penn State averaging 14 points while shooting 37.5 percent from the field. 

Can Nebraska Win a Second Straight Game?

Nebraska has been a little inconsistent the last couple of weeks, but they are coming off a big victory in the last game. Nebraska scored 68 points against Northwestern and that was enough for the four-point victory. Brice Williams had a strong game putting up 21 points, four rebounds, and four assists. There were three different players that put up at least 12 points. Two games ago against Maryland at home, they didn’t play well enough the defense gave up 83 points on the way to the defeat. 

Nebraska has a 17-9 overall record and is 15-11 against the spread. Away from home this season, Nebraska has a 4-5 overall record. Nebraska’s offense is averaging 75.8 points, while its defense is giving up 71.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 131st in the league, while its defense is ranked 174th. Brice Williams is averaging 19.5 points while shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 35 percent from behind the three-point line. Nebraska will face Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, and Iowa following this one.

Penn State just can’t be trusted, and they are going to have some major issues here. Penn State’s defense is giving up 73.5 points per game, and they are going to be awful here. Nebraska is averaging 75.8 points per game, and they are going to put on a show here. Nebraska is going to go well over their season average here, and that will be the difference here. Penn State and USC are both heading in the wrong direction and not teams I’m excited to back. The problem is Penn State has experienced a different level of suck with losses in nine of its last 10 games and just can’t get the offense and defense on the same page. Penn State either barely scores 60 points, like in games against UCLA and Minnesota, or gets blasted defensively in games against Michigan State and Illinois. USC has seen 10 of its 13 wins come at home and has competed harder over the last few weeks. Let’s not ignore USC upsetting Michigan State and Nebraska. I’ll lay the reasonable line with the Trojans on Tuesday night.

Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Preview

Coming into the new calendar year, the Nittany Lions were looking great in the record column. Amid a tough stretch of difficult Big Ten matchups however, Penn State has faltered recently. The Lions took out Binghamton, UMBC, St. Francis PA, Virginia Tech, Fort Wayne, Fordham, Buffalo, Purdue, Coppin State, Drexel, Penn and Northwestern during a nice 12-2 opening run. The only losses in that time were versus Clemson and Rutgers. Since January 2 Penn State has won just one game (versus Rutgers). The losses otherwise were versus Indiana, Illinois, Oregon, Michigan State, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State and Minnesota in succession, giving the Lions a 13-10 overall run through the first 23 outings of the 2024-25 season.

In the Minnesota game on Tuesday, Penn State hit a 25-21 advantage in the first half. The Nittany Lions faltered from there on a 48-36 deficit however, eventually losing 69-61 in the end. leading the team in scoring was D’Marco Dunn with 18 points, six boards, three assists and a steal in 32 minutes off the bench. Zach Hicks (four rebounds; one assist) and Ace Baldwin (two rebounds; five assists; one steal) each chipped in with 11 points to lead the starters.

UCLA Bruins Betting Preview

Over on the UCLA side, they had a pretty rough stretch of games in December/January but they’ve recovered well since then. The Bruins hit a 10-1 opening run with a loss to New Mexico amid wins over Rider, Boston U, Lehigh, Idaho State, Cal State Fullerton, Southern Utah, Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Prairie View. A 1-5 run came next with a win over Gonzaga amid losses to North Carolina, Nebraska, Michigan, Maryland and Rutgers. UCLA has recovered since then with wins over Iowa, Wisconsin, Washington, USC, Oregon and Michigan State, giving the team a 17-6 record through their first 23 outings this year.

Matched up against Michigan State in their Tuesday outing, the Bruins were up by seven points heading into the second half. UCLA fell back a bit in the second on a 33-28 deficit but still pulled off the tight home win 63-61. Skyy Clark led the team on 14 points with three rebounds and three assists. Tyler Bilodeau added 13 points with four rebounds and a pair of steals, while Lazar Stefanovic had eight points with one assist in 13 minutes of work off the bench.

Why the UCLA Bruins will win

• UCLA has won each of its last 10 games at Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescon against non-AP-ranked opponents.
• Penn State has lost eight of its last nine games.

UCLA vs Penn State Prediction

I’ll lean toward UCLA. The Bruins played a nice game versus Michigan State in order to get their latest upset win, but it wasn’t pretty. UCLA shot just 35 percent from the field with a 45-27 rebounding deficit. That said, the Bruins also held the Spartans to just 37.7 percent shooting on the other side and scored 19 points off 16 Michigan State turnovers. The 63 points were the Bruins’ lowest total since the January 10 loss to Maryland (61) but a win is a win.

As for Penn State, they didn’t look too bad in their loss to Minnesota initially, however they faded down the stretch. The Lions ended up shooting just 34.5 percent from the field with a 35-30 rebounding disadvantage and 11 turnovers for 10 Gophers points. Penn State has scored just 125 combined points over hate last two outings, and they’ve given up 69 or more points in 10 straight games (a 2-8 run). I’d like to see UCLA score a little better on Saturday, but the Bruins should be in a pretty good position to power one out here and keep their run going. If Penn State can bounce back and play well though, we’ll have a pretty solid matchup on our hands.

Since the calendar flipped to 2025 however, Penn State has struggled mightily amid some tough Big Ten matchups. The Lions kicked things off with a 12-2 run, falling to only Clemson and Rutgers in that time. Otherwise, it was wins over Binghamton, UMBC, St Francis PA, Virginia Tech, Fort Wayne, Fordham, Buffalo, Purdue, Coppin State, Drexel, Penn, and Northwestern in succession. Since then, however, Penn State has fallen on hard times with a 1-5 stretch. The lone win came versus Rutgers; the losses otherwise were against Indiana, Illinois, Oregon, Michigan State, and Iowa for a 13-7 overall run through the first 20 games.

In the Iowa outing on Friday, the Nittany Lions held a 43-38 deficit after one half. Penn State got better from there and hit a 37-33 advantage but ended up falling in a tough one 76-75 by the game’s end. Tops in scoring was Nick Kern, who posted 18 points with seven boards and two assists in the defeat. Yanic Konan Niederhauser added 13 points with four rebounds and two steals, while Freddie Dilione put up 10 points with seven rebounds and two steals.

Michigan Wolverines Betting Preview

Over on the Wolverines’ side, they got off to a pretty solid start themselves. Michigan has been on a good run all season—aside from a couple of brief stints from which they recovered quickly. In any case, The Wolverines posted an 8-3 run in their opening 11 outings, losing to Wake Forest, Arkansas, and Oklahoma along the way. The wins otherwise came versus Cleveland State, TCU, Miami OH, Tarleton State, Virginia Tech, Xavier, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Following wins over Fort Wayne, Western Kentucky, USC, UCLA, and Washington, the Wolverines hit a 1-2 run. The lone win in that trio was over Northwestern. Otherwise, it was losses to Purdue and Minnesota for a 14-5 overall run through the first 19 outings this year.

Matched up against Purdue on Friday, the Wolverines hit a rough 51-26 deficit in the first half. Michigan didn’t get any closer in the second on a 40-38 deficit and lost in blowout fashion 91-64. Leading the team in scoring during the losing effort was Vladislav Goldin with 14 points, six boards, and two assists. Roddy Gayle (four assists), Tre Donaldson (four rebounds), and Nimari Burnett (five rebounds; two assists) each scored 11 points in the defeat.

Why the Michigan Wolverines will win

• Michigan has won each of its last nine games at Crisler Center.
• Penn State has lost five of its last six games.
• Michigan has won the first half in each of its last eight night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Why the Penn State Nittany Lions will win

• Penn State has won each of its last six Monday games.
• Michigan has lost 15 of its last 18 night games against the Big Ten Conference.
• Michigan has lost the first half in eight of its last 10 night games against the Big Ten Conference.

Michigan vs Penn State Prediction

I’ll lean toward Penn State, but you could call this game either way. It should be one of the highlights of the Monday college basketball slate, as both teams are coming off losses and need some positive momentum. Penn State shot well (49.1 percent) from the field in their defeat by Iowa, but notched just 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from outside and allowed the Hawkeyes to hit 50 percent from the floor themselves. During this current 1-5 run, the Nittany Lions have continued to score well (outside of the 52 points in the Illinois game), with 71 or more points in five of those six.

As for Michigan, they shot pretty poorly (37 percent) in the Purdue loss, giving up 54.8 percent to the Boilermakers on the other side. The 22 turnovers for a whopping 29 Purdue points didn’t help matters either. The Wolverines had posted 80 or more points in 10 straight games prior to that, so they’ve generally had few issues putting up points. Penn State is going to have to step on the gas offensively in order to keep a cover pace here, but I think they can pull it off.

I’m on the under in this one. I just envision this being a game that’s fought and won in the trenches. Penn State Looks to Continue Hot Start

There hasn’t been as much talk the last couple of weeks surrounding this Penn State team, but there should be because they look to be for real. Penn State sits with a 12-2  record and they are coming off another comfortable victory in the last game. Penn State scored 86 points against Penn and that was enough for the 20-point victory. Penn State shot only 22.2 percent from deep and that needs to be better here. From the field, they shot 45.5 percent, and getting out to a hot start is going to be huge. Adrian Baldwin Jr had a huge game putting up 23 points, 10 assists, and four rebounds.

Penn State is averaging 88.2 points while their defense is giving up 67 points per game. The offense is ranked 6th in the league while the defense is ranked 80th. They are shooting 50.4 percent from the field which is 17th in the league. They are also averaging 18.9 assists per game which is 9th in the league. Miles Goodman is dealing with a shoulder injury and is out. Eli Rice has also been ruled out for the season.

The Wildcats shot 53.6 percent from the field and 36 percent from behind the three-point line. Guard Ty Berry was the top player putting up 23 points, three rebounds, and two assists. There were four different players that put up at least 11 points. Two games ago against DePaul, it was much of the same and they were able to secure the 84-64 victory. 

Northwestern on the season is averaging 74.6 points while their defense is giving up 63.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 212th, while the defense is ranked 28th. They are averaging 59.7 shot attempts per game which is 170th in the league. In this game, Northwestern is going to need the defense to be better. Nick Martinelli has been the top player averaging 20.2 points while shooting 52.8 percent from the field.

This game is one that I am most looking forward to and should us a big indication for both teams on how they might fare in the Big Ten. These are both good offensive teams, but Northwestern isn’t going to want to get into a shootout here. The Boise State Broncos are rested and have heard all week how they don’t have much of a chance to win this game. 

Boise State is top-10 in total offense and third in scoring offense. Ashton Jeanty is somebody who can take over a game by himself, and the Broncos are top-40 in scoring defense. It also should be mentioned that going back to 1999, Boise State is 6-1 ATS as a double-digit underdog and 3 of those covers were outright wins. Give me the points in a game, I kind of feellike Boise State could steal outright.

More recently, in the Boise State Broncos convincing 21-7 win over the UNLV Rebels last month, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty accumulated 209 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, two receptions and 14 receiving yards.

In conclusion, I fully expect Penn State Nittany Lions wide receiver Tyler Warren to continue to play at a high level versus the Boise State Broncos in the Fiesta Bowl later today.

SMU Mustangs Betting Preview

The Mustangs lost to BYU 18-15 in game three this year, then hit a nine-game win streak. Those victories were over TCU, Florida State, Louisville, Stanford, Duke, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Virginia, and California. SMU fell in their next outing versus Clemson, though.

In the ACC title game versus the Tigers, SMU was down 24-7 by halftime. The Mustangs got better from there but ultimately fell in a tough one 34-31. QB Kevin Jennings threw for 304 yards, three scores, and an interception. Tops in rushing was Brashard Smith with 24 carries for 113 yards.

Penn State Nittany Lions Betting Preview

Over on the Penn State side, they opened the year with seven straight wins before a tough loss 20-13 versus Ohio State on November 2. The Lions would then beat Washington, Purdue, Minnesota, and Maryland before another loss to Oregon.

Matched up against the Ducks in the Big Ten Championship, the Nittany Lions faced a 38-24 deficit by the fourth quarter. Penn State made a game of it but eventually lost 45-37. Drew Allar tossed for 226 yards, three scores, and an interception. Kaytron Allen led the rushing attack on 14 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown of his own.

Penn State vs SMU Prediction

I’m staying with Penn State. The Nittany Lions have been great all year and really tested an excellent Oregon team in their last outing. Penn State finished with 523 yards (297 rushing) and 28 first downs in that one but did have a couple of interceptions to sour the day. The Nittany Lions have a pretty consistent offense these days; they’ve scored 35 or more points in four of the last five outings and average 35.2 points per game this year. Penn State boasts a balanced attack with 246.5 yards per game and 27 scores through the air alongside 202.2 yards per game and 28 scores rushing.

As for SMU, they were able to hang 458 yards and 28 first downs on Clemson in their ACC Championship loss, but similarly had a couple of turnovers (one pick; and one fumble). The Mustangs average 39.9 points per game themselves but on average, they rely a bit more on the pass (267.0 YPG; 27 TDs) than they do the run (176.1 YPG; 29 TDs). Saturday’s matchup is bound to be a great one to watch, but in the end, I like Penn State to stymie the Mustangs offense just enough to cover.

The Penn State Nittany Lions come into this one looking to build on their 81-70 win over Purdue last time out to improve to 8-1 on the year. After this game, Penn State will head home for a non-conference matchup against Coppin State.

Ace Baldwin Jr. leads the Nittany Lions in scoring, assists, and steals with 15.1 PPG, 8.1 APG, and 2.1 SPG while Zach Hicks has 13.1 PPG with 4.4 RPG. Yanic Konan Niederhauser has 13.3 PPG with a team-high 6 RPG to lead Penn State on the glass while Puff Johnson has 10.6 PPG with 4.1 RPG and Nick Kern Jr. has 11.8 PPG to round out the scoring in double figures for Penn State so far this season. As a team, Penn State is averaging 90.1 PPG on 51.9% shooting from the field, 38.2% from three, and 73.4% from the foul line this season.

Why the Penn State Nittany Lions will win

• Penn State has won each of its last six night games.
• Rutgers has lost eight of its last nine games against the Big Ten Conference.

Rutgers Recap

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights come into this game looking to bounce back after an 80-66 loss to Ohio State last time out. After this game, Rutgers will square off against Seton Hall at home.

Scarlet Knights Lose Third Straight

Dylan Harper leads the Scarlet Knights in scoring and assists with 23.1 PPG and 4.6 APG while Ace Bailey has 17.9 PPG and a team-high 6 RPG to lead the Scarlet Knights on the glass as the only other double-digit scorer for Rutgers up to this point in the year. Jeremiah Williams also has 8.3 PPG and Lathan Sommerville has 8.1 PPG with 4 RPG. Jordan Derkack’s also added 7.3 PPG, 5 RPG, and 3 APG as well on the year. As a team, Rutgers is averaging 79.7 PPG on 45.4% shooting from the field, 32.2% from three, and 75.9% from the foul line this season.

Why the Rutgers Scarlet Knights will win

• Rutgers has won 12 of its last 13 night games at Jersey Mike’s Arena.
• Penn State has lost three of its last four games at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

Rutgers vs Penn State Prediction

I’m on Penn State here. I just think that Penn State is the deeper team. There’s a good chance Rutgers has the two best players on the floor in Harper and Bailey, but outside of that, I do not love Rutgers. This isn’t your typical Steve Pikiell Rutgers team, that’s predicated on elite-level defense. The Scarlet Knights haven’t been as sharp defensively so far and I think Penn State is legit. Give me the Nittany Lions here.

The Penn State Nittany Lions are 7-1 this year after they defeated Buffalo by a score of 87-64 in their last game. Penn State led 38-28 at halftime and added 49 points in the second half in the win. The Nittany Lions shot 56.5% from the field, 42.9% on three-pointers, and 61.5% on free throws in the game. Yanic Konan Niederhauser led Penn State with 27 points and three rebounds in the win. 

Prior to that game, the Nittany Lions lost to Clemson by a score of 75-67 but did win their first six games of the season. Penn State has scored 91.3 points per game and they have allowed 67.5 points per game, while also averaging 37.8 rebounds and 19 assists per game this season. Ace Baldwin Jr. is averaging 14.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game, while Penn State is shooting 52.2% from the field, 71.1% on free throws, and 38.1% on three-pointers this year.

Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview

The Purdue Boilermakers are 7-1 this season after they defeated Ole Miss by a score of 80-78 in their last game. Purdue led 42-34 at halftime and they were able to get the win, despite allowing 44 points in the second half. The Boilermakers shot 54.2% from the field, 45.5% on three-pointers, and 69.2% on free throws in the game. Trey Kaufman-Renn led Purdue with 25 points and 13 rebounds in the win. 

Prior to that victory, the Boilermakers defeated NC State and Marshall but did lose to Marquette by a score of 76-58 before that. Purdue has scored 78.8 points per game and they have allowed 68.1 points per game, while also averaging 34.9 rebounds and 17.9 assists per game this season. Trey Kaufman-Renn is averaging 19.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, while Purdue is shooting 49.9% from the field, 71.1% on free throws, and 42.1% on three-pointers this year. 

Why Purdue will beat Penn State

• Purdue has won each of its last 11 night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
• Penn State has lost each of its last eight games when playing with a rest disadvantage against Purdue.
• Purdue has won the first half in each of its last seven games against non-AP-ranked opponents.

Penn State vs Purdue Prediction 

Both of these teams come into this matchup with 7-1 records on the season, but Purdue is ranked #8 in the nation. The Boilermakers do have ranked wins over Alabama and Ole Miss this season, but they were also blown out against Marquette on the road. Penn State lost to Clemson by eight points, but they have rolled over everyone else so far. The Nittany Lions have some incredible offensive numbers, but that is due to their lack of competition, as they only scored 67 points against Clemson. I think Purdue is the better team and I like them to get the win here.
