UMBC has been inconsistent and they fell just short in the last game against Bryant. UMBC scored 79 points, but the defense gave up 81 points and that led to the two point defeat. In this game, it’s going to need to be a balanced attack, but the defense is going to need to be a whole lot better. Bryant Bulldogs Betting Preview

The Bulldogs weren’t looking so good as the 2024 calendar year came to a close. That said, Bryant has resuscitated their season in 2025 so far, as they’re riding a nice win streak right now. Following a 3-1 opening that included wins over Dean College, Buffalo, and Delaware (and a lone loss to Siena in OT), the Bulldogs hit a rough 3-8 stretch over their next 11 outings. Bryant won versus only Tennessee State, Drexel, and Vermont State Johnson in that time. Otherwise, it was losses to Stonehill, St. Bonaventure, Chattanooga, Brown, St. John’s, Fordham, Towson, and Grand Canyon. Since then, however, the Bulldogs are a nice 6-0 in their last half-dozen outings. Those victories have come in succession over Maine, Vermont, Albany, UMass Lowell, New Hampshire, and Binghamton, resulting in a 12-9 overall run so far.

In the Binghamton matchup back on Saturday, the Bulldogs were up by a modest three points by halftime. Bryant hit a 47-36 run the rest of the way, however, ultimately bagging an 83-69 victory in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Rafael Pinzon with 30 points, four rebounds, and one assist. Connor Withers added 16 points with five rebounds, and Earl Timberlake doubled up on 10 points with 12 rebounds, six assists, and three blocks in 37 minutes.

UMBC Retrievers Betting Preview

Over on the UMBC side, they’ve had a couple of good runs so far this year. The Retrievers have also had some rough stretches, however, resulting in the team barely keeping their heads above the .500 mark in the record column. UMBC kicked things off with a 3-4 run, beating Penn State York, Valley Forge, and Coppin State among losses to Penn State, Saint Peter’s, Hampton and Boston U. A 4-1 run came next with a lone loss to Georgetown amid wins over Howard, Morgan State, Towson, and Cairn University. Since then it’s been a 4-5 stretch over the last nine outings. UMBC has wins over American U, NJIT, Albany, and Vermont in that time alongside losses to Binghamton, New Hampshire, Georgia Tech, Marist, and Maine. That gives the Retrievers an 11-10 overall run through the first 21 games of the season so far.

In their Vermont matchup on Saturday, the Retrievers jumped out to a comfortable 44-28 edge by the break. UMBC hit a 36-35 run the rest of the way and rolled to the road win 80-63 in the end. Tops in scoring was Bryce Johnson with 26 points and three assists. Josh Odunowo doubled up with his 19 points, 10 boards, four steals, and three assists, and Marcus Banks chipped in with 14 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

I’ll stay with the Bulldogs. It’s been a nice six-game run for Bryant, and they’re coming off a solid win over a middling Binghamton team. In that one, the Bulldogs shot 45.5 percent from the field with 34 rebounds and 15 team assists. The real help to their cause however, was 12 Binghamton turnovers for 18 points on the other side. Bryant is scoring very well during this win streak, with 73 or more points in all six games and 81 or more in five of them.

As for UMBC, they bagged a strong win over Vermont in their last outing, shooting a stellar 57.7 percent from the field with just nine turnovers. The Retrievers did get outpaced on the boards 39-26 in that one, though—and an even worse 18-3 on the offensive glass. UMBC hasn’t been playing too badly as of late, so they could put up a decent fight here. Bryant is still probably the better team, though.

UMBC Retrievers

The Retrievers stumbled to a rough 7-18 start over their first 25 games this year. That run included a 2-13 stretch along the way. UMBC is 4-2 in their last six games though, taking out Binghamton, Albany, New Hampshire and NJIT alongside losses to Maine and Binghamton.

In the Binghamton rematch on Tuesday, the Retrievers fell back into the L column again. UMBC came out of the break with a 40-37 edge, but eventually lost it in a 72-71 defeat. Dion Brown was the team’s top scorer in the loss with his 24 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.

UMass Lowell River Hawks

Over on the Rivers Hawks’ side, they managed a 14-4 run through their first 18 games, but then hit a sketchy 2-3 stretch in February. UMass Lowell would beat Bryant, Binghamton, Albany and Bryant again in the next four before losses to Vermont and Maine.

On Tuesday versus Maine on the road, the River Hawks put up a pretty flat effort with a 37-33 first-half deficit. UMass Lowell didn’t get any closer on a 34-32 run the rest of the way and lost 71-65 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Cam Morris on 22 points and 10 boards.

ANDREW’S FREE UMBC VS UMASS LOWELL PREDICTION

I’m going to lean toward UMass Lowell in this one. The River Hawks need a good bounce-back outing after a couple of relative duds, though. In the Maine loss, UMass Lowell shot a rough 32.3 percent from the field with a 45-43 rebounding deficit and 13 turnovers for 17 Black Bears points. The River Hawks have scored less than 66 points in consecutive outings now.

The good news for UMass Lowell is that they’ve won both meetings between these teams this season. In the 93-80 road win over UMBC on February 8, the River Hawks posted a nice 52.3 percent shooting with 42 rebounds and 13 team assists. Provided UMass Lowell can get back to that kind of offensive rhythm (and avoid the excessive turnovers), they should be fine.

UMass Lowell posted a pretty solid 17-5 stretch over their first 22 games of the year. The River Hawks have gone 5-2 in the seven games since, taking wins over Albany, NJIT, Hartford, Bryant and Binghamton alongside losses to New Hampshire and Vermont. 

In the Binghamton matchup on Saturday, the River Hawks opened the game on a 40-34 run. UMass Lowell hit a 44-36 stretch in the second half and won 84-70. Allin Blunt was the leading team scorer on 21 points and four rebounds.

I’m leaning toward the River Hawks in this one. UMass Lowell is currently riding a nice 5-1 stretch, and they’ve scored 70 or more points in five straight games. The River Hawks will have to play their best basketball here, though; the last time these teams met up back on January 18 at Costello Athletic Center, UMBC caused some trouble with a 42-40 edge in the first half. UMass Lowell was able to bounce back in the second for an 81-75 win. The Retrievers have scored 66 or more points in four straight games, so this one could very well end up as a high total. Should be an interesting matchup.

NJIT went 4-12 over their first 16 games, beating only Sacred Heart, Niagara, St. Elizabeth and Maine. The Highlanders are 2-4 since then with losses to Bryant, Vermont, New Hampshire and UMass Lowell in that time. 

In the UMass Lowell matchup on Saturday, the Highlanders were down 41-25 by halftime. NJIT fell even further behind on a 49-36 second-half deficit and lost 90-61. Adam Hess led the team on 11 points and one rebound. 

UMBC Retrievers

Over on the UMBC side, they lost to Tulane, Princeton, UNCG, Georgetown, Maryland and Vermont in their first 16 outings. The Retrievers are 5-4 since then with wins over Bryant, Maine, Hartford, New Hampshire and Binghamton. 

Matched up against Maine on Saturday, the Retrievers took a 38-26 deficit into the second half. UMBC was outscored 46-23 from there and lost 84-49 in a blowout. Dion Brown was tops in scoring on 19 points and six boards. 

ANDREW’S FREE PICK 

I’ll likely stay with UMBC here. The Retrievers are coming off a bad outing versus Maine; not much went right in that one. The defeat also broke a string of nine straight games with 65 or more points for UMBC. Adding to the drama is the fact that NJIT managed a win 69-65 the last time these teams met up back on January 25 at Wellness and Events Center. That said, UMBC has a golden opportunity to extract some revenge in this rematch. They’ll have to get off to a good start but I think the Retrievers can bounce back and power out a cover.

Binghamton Bearcats

Binghamton hit a 6-10 run over their first 16 games, beating Cazenovia, Marist, Columbia, SUNY Oneonta, New Hampshire and NJIT. The Bearcats are 3-2 in their last five with losses to Maine and Vermont. 

In the Bryant game on Saturday, Binghamton posted a 49-36 stretch in the first half. The Bearcats outscored the Bulldogs 35-31 from there and won it 84-67. Dan Petcash was tops in scoring with 24 points and eight rebounds. 

UMBC Retrievers 

Over on the UMBC side, they lost to Tulane, Princeton, UNCG, Georgetown, Maryland and Vermont during their first 16 games. The Retrievers are 4-3 in their last seven with losses to UMass Lowell, NJIT and Vermont. 

Matched up against Vermont on Saturday, the Retrievers went into the break down 34-23. UMBC made a run at it in the second with 45 points but still lost 74-68. Yaw Obeng-Mensah led the way on 18 points and 16 rebounds. 

ANDREW’S FREE PICK 

I’m going to stick with UMBC. The Retrievers need to bounce back from a limp effort against a mediocre Vermont tea, though. UMBC has been scoring pretty well recently—which is good news. They’ve hit 68 or more points in seven of their last eight outings and should have some scoring opportunities in this one as well. As for Binghamton, they posted a nice win over Bryant in their last outing but they’ve been fairly erratic on the scoreboard over their last handful of games. I don’t think the Bearcats will keep a cover pace for the whole game here.

In the Albany game, the Retrievers were up 40-32 going into the second half. UMBC kept the pace from there and ended up with a 92-83 victory. Jacob Boonyasith led the way on 21 points with seven assists. 

Over on the Bryant side, they were 7-3 after 10 games with losses to FAU, Brown and Cincinnati. The Bulldogs are 3-2 since then with wins versus Manhattan, Towson and Binghamton alongside losses to Liberty and Vermont. 

Matched up against Vermont on Thursday, the Bulldogs scored just 22 points in the first half and trailed by 11 points. Bryant hit 42 points from there but still lost 74-64. Earl Timberlake (17 points; 13 rebounds) and Antwan Walker (13 points; 13 rebounds) both doubled up. 

PICK: I’m going to take a stab on UMBC. You could probably make a great case either way here, however; it should be a great matchup. In any case, the Retrievers are on a pretty good run right now. Over the last nine games UMBC is 7-2, and they’ve hit 70 or more points in 11 of their last 13 outings. As for Bryant, they’re 4-2 in the last six with 69 or more points in four of those games. I like this one to be a pretty high-scoring matchup with UMBC eventually pulling out the cover. Should be a fun one.

Vermont went just 1-5 to start out the season, taking a lone win over Brown. The Catamounts are 5-3 since then however, beating Ball State, Lyndon State, Merrimack Dartmouth and Colgate with losses to UNCW, LBSU and Toledo. 

In the Toledo game way back on December 20, the Catamounts were drilled 42-28 in the first half. Vermont scored 44 points from there but still lost 84-72. Dylan Penn led the team on 20 points with two rebounds. 

Over on the UMBC side, they hit a 3-3 run in their first six games with losses to Tulane, Princeton and UNCG. UMBC is 6-2 since then with wins over Coppin State, Lehigh, Columbia, Morgan State, Loyola MD and William & Mary. 

Last Thursday versus Maryland, UMBC was within three points at halftime. The Retrievers were outscored 47-34 in the second half and lost 80-64. Both Craig Beaudion and Jarvis Doles scored 14 points apiece.

PICK: I’ll probably try UMBC here. The Retrievers did pretty well in the first half versus a good Maryland team in their last outing but eventually shot just 35.9 percent from the field. That game also broke a string of 70-plus points performances that had lasted for 10 games. As for Vermont, It’s been a long time since they’ve been on the court, but they’ve hit 68 or more points in four of their last five games. I like this one to be a high-scoring affair with UMBC powering out a cover.
