Can Oregon State Win Second Straight?

Oregon State has been up and down, but they have come off a big win in the last game. Orgon State faced off against Pacific in the last game and they were able to secure the 79-65 victory. Josiah Lake had a strong game putting up 16 points, five rebounds,  and two assists. There were six different players that put up at least 11 points, and they are going to need a balanced offensive attack again here. In the second half the defense gave up only 25 points and they are going to need the defense to step up in a big way again here.

Danilo Dozic did have a strong game putting up 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists. There were three players who found offensive success,  but outside of those there just wasn’t any production. 

Pepperdine sits with a 10-17 record overall and they have gone 12-14 against the spread. At home this season they sit with a 6-7 record overall. Pepperdine is averaging 72.2 points while their defense is giving up 75.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 238th in the league while the defense is ranked 276th. Stefan Todorovic has been the top player this season averaging 18.7 points while shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 39.4 percent from behind the three point line.

Oregon State Beavers Betting Preview

Oregon State got off to a great start through their first dozen games. The Beavers have been pretty choppy since then, though. Oregon State took out Utah Tech, Weber State, Western Oregon, Cal State Fullerton, UC Davis, Idaho, UC Irvine, Sacramento State, Charleston and Oakland in those first 12 outings, falling to only Oregon and North Texas otherwise. Since then the Beavers are a shaky 7-6 overall. The wins have come versus Portland, San Diego, Pacific, Gonzaga, Pepperdine, Santa Clara and Washington State. Otherwise it’s been losses to Nebraska, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s. That gives the Beavers a 17-8 overall record through their first 25 games of the season.

In the Saint Mary’s matchup over the weekend, the Beavers opened the game with a rough 30-19 deficit. Oregon State didn’t end up getting any closer than that, falling further behind on a 33-30 run for a 63-49 defeat in the end. The team’s only double-digit scorer was Isaiah Sy, who came off the bench for 10 points and two rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Nate Kingz led the starters with a modest seven points and one rebound. Both Parsa Fallah (five rebounds) and Damarco Minor (three rebounds) chipped in six points apiece as well.

Portland Pilots Betting Preview

Over on the Portland side, they’ve had a rough season so far. The Pilots haven’t been able to win consecutive games just yet. During a 3-7 start, Portland fell to UC Santa Barbara, Oregon, South Florida, Ohio, Princeton, Kent State and Kansas City. After a 2-1 run with wins over Willamette and Lafayette (with a loss to CSU Bakersfield), Portland fell to Washington State, Oregon State, Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and San Francisco in succession. It’s been a 3-4 run since then featuring wins over Pacific, San Diego and Pepperdine among losses to Washington State, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara. That gives Portland a rough 8-17 overall record through 25 games so far this year.

Matched up against Santa Clara last Thursday, the Pilots came out of the locker room facing a 41-31 deficit. Portland got blitzed 56-19 the rest of the way, limping to a blowout loss 97-50 in the end. Leading the way in the defeat was Christ Austin with 12 points and four rebounds. Vukasin Masic came off the bench to provide 11 points with four rebounds and one assist. Max Mackinnon added eight points with three rebounds and one assist in 32 minutes as well.

Why the Portland Pilots will win

Portland vs Oregon State Prediction

I’ll stay with Oregon State. The Beavers need a good effort after falling to Saint Mary’s at home, and this is a good spot to get it. Oregon State shot just 36.5 percent from the field in the loss to the Gaels, giving up 53.1 percent shooting on the other side. The 30-28 rebounding deficit didn’t help either. The Beavers have been below 61 points in two of the last three games now, losing both of those outings.

The last time these teams met up back on December 30, Oregon State powered out an 89-79 win at home. The Beavers shot very well in that one, hitting 61.4 percent from the field. That said, Oregon State also gave up 51.9 percent shooting on the other side, however the 29-19 rebounding advantage helped significantly. In any case, the Beavers are certainly the better team in this scenario but I’d like to see them clamp down a little better on defense this time on the way to a more convincing road win in the rematch. Oregon State could certainly use it.

I’m on Oregon State in this game. Saint Mary’s is almost in cruise control to take down the WCC regular season title with an upcoming homestand and some games left against the dregs of the WCC and I think that Oregon State could use another signature win here to bolster their NCAA tournament at-large resume in the event they don’t win the WCC tournament. I think catching points in this spot is well worth the look as I think Saint Mary’s kind of gets caught napping here once again. Give me the Beavers and the points.

I’m on Oregon State here. I just have my concerns with Pepperdine, that they’re still one of the lower-tier teams in the WCC that do what teams like the Waves, Pacific, Portland, and San Diego do year after year, and that’s cannibalizing each other at the bottom of the WCC standings while the rest of the conference beats down on them. Now it’s hard to know right away if that’s going to be something that Oregon State follows suit with, but the Beavers have been so strong at home this season and aren’t really a team I want to step in front of when Pepperdine is the alternative. The Beavers have already beaten similar teams like Pacific on the road by 36 and San Diego at home by 27. I’m not saying this is a big margin like that, but I think that Oregon State can get the win and cover at home here. Give me the Beavers.

There wasn’t anything sexy about the last game for Santa Clara, but they made just enough plays to beat San Diego 81-80. They were outscored 53-46 in the second half, but still held on. Guard Carlos Stewart had a strong game putting up 20 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Guard Tyree Byran also put up 10 points, five rebounds, and one assist. 

Two games ago against San Francisco, Santa Clara scored 94 points but they ended up losing because the defense gave up 97 points. Santa Clara is averaging 81.1 points while their defense is giving up 75.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 65th in the league while the defense is ranked 287th. Adama Alpha Bel is averaging 13.6 points while shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from behind the three-point line.

Loyola Marymount is Struggling

Loyola Marymount is suddenly struggling heading into this game and they have lost two games in a row. Two games ago against San Francisco, they lost 70-55 and in the last game against Washington State, they ended up losing 73-59. This team has been up and down this season and in the last game the offense really let them down. Caleb Stone-Carrawell was the top player in the last game putting up 20 points, three rebounds, and one assist. There were three different players that put up at least 10 points, but overall the offense is going to need to be better.

Oregon State Beavers Betting Preview

Oregon State’s season kicked off on a nice 4-0 run before consecutive losses versus Oregon and North Texas. Since then it’s been another 4-0 stretch with wins over UC Davis, Idaho, UC Irvine and Sacramento State.

Charleston was out-rebounded 48-36 in that one (22-8 offensively) which could get them into major trouble on Sunday. That said, the Cougars have scored well over this four-game win streak with 77 or more points in each outing.

As for Oregon State, they rolled right past Sac State in their last outing on 53.7 percent shooting and 37 rebounds. The Beavers have posted 78 or more points in three of the last four (67 in the outlier—all wins), and they were within three points in both losses this year. Covering here will be a tall order for Charleston, but I think it’s doable if the Cougars play well.

Otherwise, the offense wasn’t bad with 474 yards (292 passing) and 29 first downs, but coming away with only 13 points after holding the ball for 39:45 is quite the underachievement.

San Jose State Spartans Betting Preview

The Spartans kicked things off this year with wins over Sacramento State, Air Force, and Kennesaw State before a loss to Washington State in overtime. A 2-2 run followed with wins over Nevada and Wyoming mixed with losses to Colorado State and Fresno State.

In the Fresno State game back on October 26, the Spartans came out of the third quarter with a 27-7 deficit and eventually lost 33-10. QB Walker Eget threw for 202 yards, one TD, and two picks, while Floyd Chalk carried 10 times for 89 yards to top the rushing.

Oregon State Beavers Betting Preview

Over on the Oregon State side, they won four of their first five games over Idaho State, San Diego State, Purdue, and Colorado State with a loss to Oregon otherwise. Next came three straight losses to Nevada, UNLV, and California, though.

In the California game, the Beavers were demolished 31-0 in the first half and limped to a 44-7 blowout. QB Ben Gulbranson had 131 yards with a score, and Anthony Hankerson led the rush with 49 yards. Trent Walker caught the TD among his five grabs for 58 yards.

I’ll lean toward Oregon State. Probably not touching this one though, as both teams could use a good showing here. The Beavers were slapped around pretty badly by California, gaining just 200 yards of offense (140 passing), 3.6 yards per play, 12 first downs, and 1-of-12 on third-down tries. Oregon State’s defense gave up 478 yards on the other side (364 passing) and 28 first downs along the way.

As for San Jose State, they gave up 401 yards (275 passing) and 12-of-19 on third downs in their loss to Fresno State. The Spartans offense went just 5-of-15 on third downs themselves and had four interceptions. San Jose State hasn’t gotten past 24 points in any of the last three games, so I think the Beavers can keep a cover pace here.
