The Jacksonville State Gamecocks are 5-1 SU at home and have been the more consistent team overall with a top-5 rushing attack and top-20 scoring offense. I like the Gamecocks by a touchdown.

However, the WKU Hilltoppers are coming off rough back-to-back weeks, which include a loss to LA Tech as a double-digit favorite and not competing against Liberty. At home on senior night, WKU should be able to get back on track, but I’m not betting on it. Give me Jacksonville State and the points.

Western Kentucky has won three games in a row, but they are allowing over 72 points per game on defense. I think Kentucky is primed for another huge offensive game and I like them to keep rolling here. Take the Wildcats.

Western Kentucky Offense Looks to Bounce Back

Western Kentucky beat New Mexico State 41-28 two games ago, but in the last game, the offense wasn’t good enough. The Hilltoppers faced off against Lousiana Tech and they scored only seven points on the way to the defeat. Caden Veltkamp completed 17 of his 26 passes for 152 yards, zero touchdowns, and zero interceptions. In this game, the offense is going to need to be a whole lot better. If the offense struggles, this will be a long game.  Western Kentucky has been averaging 28 points per game so far this season. This ranks their offense in the 64th position in college football. Their defense has allowed for an average of 21.1 points per game, ranking them 35th in comparison to other defenses.

Liberty Coming off an Overtime Win

Liberty comes into this game with a 7-2 record overall but they almost suffered an awful loss in the last game. It took overtime but they were able to secure the 35-34 victory in overtime. Kaidon Slater wasn’t good enough and he completed 9 of his 16 passes for 114 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. Running back Quinton Cooley had a huge game though finishing with 20 carries for 147 yards and three touchdowns. Liberty has been averaging 31.3 points per game. Offensively, they are ranked 41st amongst others so far this season in college football. Their defense has given up an average of 23.89 points per game. This ranks them 63rd when compared to other defenses in college football. 

Liberty vs Western Kentucky Prediction

Give me Western Kentucky to pull the upset here. I am not sold on Slater under center, and I do trust the Hilltoppers defense. Western Kentucky’s defense is giving up 21.1 points per game and they are going to step up in a big way here. Liberty is going to have no answer and it’s going to be Western Kentucky that is going to get the job done here. Back Western Kentucky against the spread. LA Tech Bulldogs Betting Preview

The Bulldogs kicked off their year with a 2-4 run, beating only Nicholls and Middle Tennessee alongside losses to NC State, Tulsa, FIU, and New Mexico State. Louisiana Tech would then beat UTEP before another loss to Sam Houston 9-3.

Matched up against Jacksonville State last weekend, the Bulldogs pushed the Gamecocks to overtime but eventually fell 44-37. Evan Bullock posted 266 yards with three TDs and an interception. Tru Edwards was tops in receiving with six grabs for 142 yards and two scores.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Betting Preview

Over on the Western Kentucky side, they lost to Alabama in their opener before wins over Eastern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, and Toledo. After a loss to Boston College, the Hilltoppers beat UTEP, Sam Houston, and Kennesaw State.

In their game against New Mexico State on Saturday, the Hilltoppers put up double-digit points in three of four quarters along the way to a 41-28 win. Caden Veltkamp bagged 246 pass yards, two scores, and two picks alongside a pair of rush TDs. Kisean Johnson caught five balls for 88 yards and a score to lead the receivers.

I’m leaning toward WKU. The Hilltoppers really need to clean up the rush defense, though. Western Kentucky gave up a whopping 331 yards on the ground in their win over New Mexico State. That said, the defense also came up with five takeaways, which killed a lot of Aggies’ momentum in the victory.

As for LA Tech, they mustered 410 yards (144 rushing), 20 first downs, two turnovers, and a 5-of-13 effort on third-down conversions in their OT loss to Jacksonville State. Their defense did well on three takeaways but also gave up 28 first downs and 9-of-16 on third-down tries. WKU should have control here if they can avoid mistakes.

Western Kentucky Has Confidence

Western Kentucky has confidence heading into this game and they sit with a 6-2 record overall. In the last game against Kennesaw State, Western Kentucky scored 31 points and they ended up winning by 17 points. Caden Veltkamp completed 17 of his 22 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns.

It’s been an awful season for New Mexico State and coming into this game they sit with a 2-6 record. In the last game against the FIU Panthers, New Mexico State scored only 13 points and that led to the blowout defeat. Brandon Nunez and Santino Marucci both were under center and both looked pretty awful. 

New Mexico State is averaging 19.6 points while their defense is giving up 36.6 points per game. The offense is ranked 121st in the league while the defense is ranked 127th. This team has been so inconsistent, but if they were able to pull off a win here, it would be quite the big upset. 

Western Kentucky vs New Mexico State Prediction

New Mexico State isn’t very talented with the offense and their lack of scoring will be the difference here. Western Kentucky’s offense is better, but not that much better as they are averaging only 29 points per game, and they also aren’t going to run up the score here. The FIU Panthers are going to have no issue getting the job done here against the UTEP Miners. UTEP comes into this game with an 0-6 record, and they have had major issues all season. UTEP’s biggest issue all season has been the offense, and they are going to really struggle to get the offense going here. FIU is going to end up cruising here to the victory. Back IFU against the spread. 

Give me Western Kentucky here. Sure, Sam Houston State is good, but so is this Western Kentucky team, and even on the road they are going to find success. In the last game, Western Kentucky scored 44 points against UTEP and two games ago against Boston College they lost by only one point. Western Kentucky is going to find success scoring again here, and thy will keep this one close.

FIU and UTEP are going to be involved in a lower scoring game and that is going to be the difference here. This game all comes down to the UTEP’s offense and their lack of scoring, and their lack of scoring is going to be what keeps this game lower scoring. UTEP is going to struggle to get to even seven points here, and this game is going to stay under 47.5 points. 

Not often do I include the same side twice, but there is way too much value to pass up here. I really just am not sold on this Sam Houston team and their lack of scoring is going to be the difference here as Western Kentucky is coming out on top. Back Western Kentucky to pull the upset here.

I’m going to take a shot with UTEP here. Not one I’m rushing to bet, but the biggest win that WKU had this season came against Middle Tennessee, the worst team in the country in terms of stopping the pass. WKU has a susceptible defense and the Miners are actually a decent passing offense. WKU is a pass-first offense without question, but the strength of UTEP’s defense even though there aren’t many strengths, is their pass defense as they’re 52^nd nationally against the pass and have also held Colorado State and Liberty reasonably close this season. WKU’s offense always has the potential to go off, but I think this is just a case of too many points. Give me UTEP.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Betting Preview

In their first matchup of the 2024 season, WKU took on a very good Alabama team. The Hilltoppers were decisively blown out in that one 63-0. TJ Finley managed 92 pass yards and two picks. Tops in receiving was Moussa Barry with 27 yards off four grabs.

In game two the Hilltoppers played Eastern Kentucky. In that one, WKU held a 17-0 advantage by halftime and eventually came out on top 31-0. Finley bagged 351 pass yards and a score in the win. Leading the rush was Elijah Young with 52 yards and two scores off 13 carries.

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Betting Preview

Over on the Middle Tennessee side, they kicked things off against Tennessee Tech. The Raiders were outscored 20-11 in the second half but held on for the win 32-25. Nicholas Vattiato had 210 yards with one TD and one interception. Frank Peasant rushed 10 times for 49 yards and a pair of scores.

Matched up against Ole Miss last weekend, the Raiders were overmatched. Middle Tennessee was down 31-3 by halftime and limped to a blowout loss of 52-3. Vattiato managed 209 pass yards and a pick this time. Holden Willis was the top receiver on seven catches for 94 yards.

I’ll lean toward Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers didn’t have too many issues against Eastern Kentucky in their last outing. WKU posted 467 total yards (351 passing), 7.3 yards per play, 25 first downs, and a nice 6-of-10 rate on third-down tries. On defense, the Hilltoppers gave up 266 yards (76 passing) and 13 first downs. The Colonels’ 10 penalties didn’t hurt, either.

As for Middle Tennessee, there was little chance of them staying close to Ole Miss—and they didn’t. The Raiders gave up 655 total yards (397 passing) and 34 first downs in the blowout loss. This weekend’s matchup will be significantly easier, but I still don’t think MTSU will cover it.

Alabama Crimson Tide Betting Preview

The Alabama Crimson Tide went 12-2 (9-0) last year and they finished first in the SEC West Division. Alabama defeated MTSU by a score of 56-7 in their opener last year, but they did lose to Texas by a score of 34-24 in their second game. Alabama followed that loss up with 10 wins to close the regular season, which included a wild win over Auburn in the finale. Alabama defeated Georgia by a score of 27-24 in the SEC Title game, but they lost to Michigan by a score of 27-20 in overtime in the CFP Semifinal. Alabama had a great 2023 season, but losing Nick Saban is a massive loss. 

Alabama does return Jalen Milroe at quarterback, who threw for 2,834 yards, 23 touchdowns, and six interceptions last season, while adding 531 rushing yards and 12 scores. Milroe is going to be the focal point of the offense, but I do have concerns about the running game. Alabama wasn’t great at running the football last year and Washington struggled to run the ball as well, so we will see if DeBoer can figure the ground game out. 

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Betting Preview

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers were 8-5 (5-3) last season and they finished fourth in the C-USA standings. Western Kentucky opened the season 2-0 with wins over South Florida and Houston Christian, but they were throttled by a score of 63-10 against Ohio State. Western Kentucky went 3-4 over the next seven games, but they did beat Sam Houston and FIU to close out the regular season. The Hilltoppers defeated Old Dominion in overtime by a score of 38-35 in the Famous Toastery Bowl to end the season. 

Western Kentucky had a very good passing attack last season and while they did lose their quarterback, they have two very good options to continue slinging the ball around. The running game doesn’t produce much for this team, as the emphasis is on throwing the ball, but the offensive line should be solid. Defensively, Western Kentucky is going to struggle against a team like Alabama, but they should hold up decently well against C-USA competition. 

Why Alabama will beat WKU

• Western Kentucky has lost five of its last six games against opponents from the Southeastern Conference.

Alabama comes into this game as a pretty big favorite and they are poised for another very good season. The Crimson Tide opened up the 2023 season with a 56-7 win over MTSU and we could see something similar here. Western Kentucky’s passing attack is very solid, but they will struggle to sustain drives against this Alabama defense.

Alabama should have no issues moving the ball, but I do think we could see an emphasis on the run game, as that area needs to improve. I don’t love this game, but I will take Alabama to cover the big spread, as I think they will shut down WKU’s passing attack.

Over on the Marquette side, they’re a tepid 6-4 over their last ten outings. That said, the Golden Eagles haven’t lost to an unranked team—or a team not named UConn or Creighton—since January 10. Marquette beat Villanova and Providence in the tournament before falling to the Huskies.

Matched up against UConn on Saturday, the Golden Eagles weren’t able to do much damage. Marquette kept the pace pretty well in the first half, but was then outscored 47-33 the rest of the way for a 73-57 loss. Kam Jones managed a team-high 13 points with eight boards in the defeat.

Western Kentucky vs Marquette Prediction

I’ll lean toward Marquette here. The Golden Eagles had the misfortune of running into UConn in their last game, and were only able to post 38.9 percent shooting from the field. Marquette didn’t rebound too badly (32) though, and hit 9-of-11 from the line. The Eagles had scored 71 or more points in three consecutive games prior to that loss and should hit a pretty solid total here as well. Marquette is a big favorite in this one, and if they go though, the Golden Eagles will meet Colorado or Florida.

As for Western Kentucky, I expect them to put up a pretty good fight on Friday. The Hilltoppers didn’t shoot well from outside (18.8 percent) versus UTEP and had 16 turnovers in their last game though, so there’s plenty to improve on. WKU hasn’t finished below 70 points since way back on December 16, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a shootout here. Should be a fun one to watch.
