UNC Asheville Bulldogs Betting Preview

The Bulldogs managed a pretty good run last season, going 22-12 overall with a 12-4 record in the Big South Conference. UNC Asheville finished just one spot out of the lead in the standings with that run, behind High Point at 13-3. The Bulldogs’ season ended with a loss to Longwood in the Big South Tournament championship.

This year, UNC Asheville returns two of their five starters along with head coach Mike Morrell in his seventh season at the helm. The Bulldogs get Loyola Marymount transfer Justin Wright in the mix as well, coming off 11.1 points per game with 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists last year.

Alabama Crimson Tide Betting Preview

Over on the Alabama side, they’re coming off a 25-12 run in 2023-24 with a 13-5 record in Southeastern Conference play. The Tide landed in the No. 3 spot among SEC teams, behind Tennessee and Kentucky. Alabama would eventually make it to the Final Four, where they lost to UConn 86-72.

Coming into the 2024-25 season, the Tide have a No. 2 AP ranking for seventh-year head coach Nate Oats. Alabama loses three of their five starters from last year, however they’ll be without guards Aaron Estrada (13.4 PPG) and Rylan Griffen (11.2 PPG). Center Nick Pringle is gone as well, but Rutgers transfer Clifford Omoruyi should slot right into his place.

I’m going to lean toward Alabama. You could make a case either way here, though. The Tide are full of high hopes this season following their improbable run to the Final Four, and they’ve got a decent chance at a deep run again. With guards like Mark Sears (21.5 PPG) and Chris Youngblood (15.3 PPG) in the mix the Tide should be lighting up the scoreboards with plenty of 3-balls. Depth-wise, Alabama is stacked top to bottom, which will help immensely as the inevitable injuries arrive. UNC Asheville has quite a bit of talent themselves and should be able to hang around for a while here but I like the Tide slightly better on a potential opener cover.

Gardner-Webb Bulldogs

The Bulldogs got off to a rocky 5-12 run over their first 17 games this year, but then hit a six-game win streak in January. After a 2-3 stretch last month, Gardner-Webb has won their last four. Those victories came versus UNC Asheville, Longwood, Winthrop and Presbyterian.

In the tournament matchup versus Presbyterian on Friday, the Bulldogs were down 34-27 by halftime. Gardner-Webb came back with a 34-26 run in the second for a 61-60 victory. Leading the charge was DQ Nicholas with 15 points, seven boards and two assists in 34 minutes.

Matched up against Charleston Southern in tournament activity Friday, the Bulldogs were up 29-20 by the break. UNC Asheville was outscored 35-31 the rest of the way in a 60-55 win. Drew Pember topped the team with his 24 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double.

ANDREW’S FREE GARDNER-WEBB VS UNC ASHEVILLE PREDICTION

I’ll likely lean toward UNC Asheville here. We should have a fun matchup regardless, though. The Bulldogs didn’t play especially well on offense against Charleston Southern, hitting just 36.7 percent from the field alongside a 45-36 rebounding deficit. UNC Asheville held the Buccaneers to just 34.5 percent shooting on the other side however, and notched 17 points off 14 turnovers. The Bulldogs have held opponents below 70 points in five of the last seven games.

The last time these teams saw each other on February 24, Gardner-Webb took a 78-77 road win. Both teams shot well in that one (over 46.7 percent), but Gardner-Webb owned the boards 39-28. This tournament matchup is sure to be a close one as well. I like UNC Asheville to play well and get a little revenge, but you’ll probably be able to call it either way. Should be a good one.

Charleston Southern Buccaneers

The Buccaneers stumbled to a 6-11 record over their first 17 games this year. The next eight were a 2-6 run with losses to High Point, Winthrop, UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb. It’s been 2-2 stretch since then with losses to High Point and Presbyterian alongside wins over USC Upstate and Radford.

In the Presbyterian matchup over the weekend, the Buccaneers were down 38-27 by halftime. Charleston Southern got better in the second half on a 38-34 run but still lost 72-65 in the end. Leading team scorer A’lahn Sumler put up 23 points with three assists in the defeat.

UNC Asheville Bulldogs

Over on the Bulldogs’ side, they were 14-9 at the end of January. UNC Asheville is 6-2 in their last eight outings. Those wins came versus Winthrop, High Point, USC Upstate, Presbyterian, Charleston Southern and Radford. The losses were against Longwood and Gardner-Webb otherwise.

Matched up against Radford on Saturday, the Bulldogs came out of the break with a 43-32 edge. UNC Asheville cruised from there on a 30-28 deficit and win 71-62 in the end. Tops in scoring was Drew Pember with 25 points, six rebounds and three assists and 33 minutes.

ANDREW’S FREE CHARLESTON SOUTHERN VS UNC ASHEVILLE PREDICTION

I’ll stick with UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs didn’t shoot great against Radford in their last game (41.3 percent) but still pulled off the road win without too much difficulty. UNC Asheville has now scored 71 or more points in 12 straight games.

The Bulldogs won both of the meetings between these teams this year: 71-65 (road) on January 27 and 86-55 (home) on February 17. In the last game, UNC Asheville shot a nice 52.4 percent from the field while holding the Bucs to just 25.4 percent on the other side. This third matchup on neutral ground likely won’t be such a blowout but I still like the Bulldogs on a cover.

I’m leaning towards UNC-Asheville here. Not a game I’m rushing to bet, and I may just watch this one as a fan because I want to see how the Bruins fare in a high-pressure environment like the NCAA tournament without Jaylen Clark before feeling good about the Bruins potential going forward. UNC-Asheville’s also a dangerous opponent as they shoot the three extremely well and I think this has potential to be a fairly interesting matchup. Give me the Bulldogs and the points here.

USC Upstate Spartans

USC Upstate went 9-13 over their first 22 games of the year. The Spartans hit a nice 6-1 run to finish off the season, beating UNC Asheville, Charleston Southern, Winthrop, Longwood, Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb. 

In Friday’s Big South Tournament game rematch versus Gardner-Webb, the Spartans were down 35-32 in the locker room. USC Upstate rallied on a 45-41 run in the second and took the win 77-76. Jordan Gainey led the team on his 25 points and two rebounds.

The Bulldogs are on a nice seven-game win streak right now and they’ve scored 75 or more points in six of those outings. These teams have met twice before this year, splitting victories. UNC Asheville won at home 64-58 back on January 21, and the Spartans took a win at GB Hodge Center 76-70 on February 4. USC Upstate is on a three-game win streak right now and they’ve won seven of their last eight overall. This is bound to be a great matchup, and I think UNC Asheville can pull off the cover if they play well.

Charleston Southern Buccaneers

The Buccaneers limped to a pretty rough 8-14 record over their first 22 games this year. Charleston Southern finished off the year with a 1-6 run, taking losses to High Point, USC Upstate, Radford, Campbell, Winthrop and UNC Asheville. 

In the tournament game versus High Point on Wednesday, the Buccaneers were down 40-30 by halftime. Charleston Southern rallied on a 42-30 second half and won 72-70. Claudell Harris topped the team with 20 points and four rebounds. 

UNC Asheville Bulldogs 

Over on the UNC Asheville side, they managed an 18-6 run through their first 24 outings. The Bulldogs then took a loss to USC Upstate before beating Winthrop, Presbyterian, Radford, Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern and Longwood in succession. 

Matched up against Longwood on Saturday, UNC Asheville was down 38-33 going into the second half. The Bulldogs came back on a 43-28 run and took the win 76-66. Fletcher Abee put up 20 points and Drew Pember added 19 points in the victory.

UNC Asheville won both meetings between these teams this year. The first was 73-63 on January 18 at CSU Field House, then at Kimmel Arena on February 22 the Bulldogs won 80-62 thanks to a 43-26 second half. The Buccaneers have been a very shaky team lately and I don’t think they’ll be able to keep pace if UNC Asheville gets going.

I’ll lean toward UNC Asheville here. The Bulldogs are on a great run these days; they’ve lost just one game during this calendar year. The scoring has been pretty solid as well, with 70 or more points in nine of their last 11 games. These teams last saw each other back on January 18 in a 73-63 Bulldogs win at CSU Field House. With the Buccaneers struggling lately (and most of the season), I don’t see Charleston Southern getting close in the road rematch.

I’ll stay with UNC Asheville here. That said, I could go either way; this should be a great matchup. Both teams are playing well lately and it seems another close outcome is in the cards. The last time these teams met back on December 29, the Bulldogs pulled off a 62-58 victory at Kimmel Arena. Radford is 4-1 in their last five home games so they should be able to put up a good fight in the rematch. UNC Asheville has scored 70 or more points in six straight games though, so I don’t think the Highlanders will be able to power out the cover.
