Ohio State is trying to string together some big wins and if they want to make a run at the NCAA Tournament, this is really a game that they need to win. Ohio State is averaging 80 points while their defense is giving up 71.4 points per game. The offense is ranked 53rd in the league while the defense is ranked 179th in the league. This game they are going to need to get the offense out to a fast start, but they are also going to need to play a more complete game. Bruce Thorton has been the top player for Ohio State averaging 17.1 points while shooting 51.3 percent from the field and 45.9 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Should Maryland Be Getting More Attention

Maryland probably should be getting more attention as they have stayed hot and now look like they could be one of the better teams in college basketball. Maryland has won four games in a row and the last one was probably most impressive. Maryland put up 76 points against a very good Wisconsin team and that was enough for the victory. Maryland shot 40 percent from the field and 50 percent from deep. It was a balanced attack with all five starters putting up at least 12 points. Rodney Rice was the leader of the squad putting up 16 points, two assists, and one rebound.

The offense might grab the headlines, but this is a very talented defense, and that’s what might allow them a deep run in March. Julian Reese had a huge game putting up 27 points, 17 rebounds, and one assist. There were four different players that put up at least 13 points. 

Maryland comes into this game with a 15-5 record overall and they have gone 10-10 against the spread. The over has hit in 12 of the 20 games. Maryland is averaging 83.6 points while their defense is giving up 64.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 20th in all of college basketball while the defense is ranked 29th in college basketball. Derik Queen has been the top player for this team averaging 15.6 points while shooting 56.2 percent from the field. 

Indiana Needs This Win

Indiana is trying to build a resume for March and with the way they have played this season, and some of the losses they have, this is a game they need. In the last game, they faced off against Northwestern and it wasn’t a great game, The offense scored 70 points, but the defense gave up 79 points, and that led to the defeat. Indian shot 42.1 percent from the field but they allowed Northwestern to shoot 48.3 percent from the field. The defense also gave up 54 points in the second half. 

Indiana sits with a 14-6 record overall but they have gone 10-10 against the spread. The offense is averaging 77.1 points while their defense is giving up 72.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 115th in the league while the defense is ranked 224th. They are shooting 46.26 percent from the field, which is 111th in the league. Oumar Ballo has been the top player for the team averaging 14.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. 

Indiana vs Maryland Prediction 

I just don’t trust this Indiana team and even at home, they are going to struggle. The fans are going to be chanting for them to make some changes again. Maryland on the season is averaging only 83 points per game and they are going to have no issue running up the score here. Maryland Terrapins Betting Preview

The Terrapins are doing quite well this season—all things considered—despite a .500 run over their last half-dozen outings. They’ve still only lost consecutive games once so far. Maryland opened the year on an 11-2 run with losses to Marquette and Purdue. Otherwise, it was wins over Manhattan, Mount St. Mary’s, Florida A&M, Canisius, Villanova, Bucknell, Alcorn State, and Ohio State. After three straight wins over St. Francis PA, Syracuse, and Maryland Eastern Shore, the Terrapins lost to Washington and Oregon in consecutive outings. Since then it’s been a 3-1 run though, as Maryland has only fallen to Northwestern in that quartet. Otherwise, the wins were over UCLA, Minnesota, and Nebraska, giving the Terrapins a respectable 14-5 overall record through the first 19 games of the season.

In the Nebraska matchup on Sunday, the Terrapins entered the second half with a 37-35 edge. The Terrapins kept it rolling from there on a 32-31 stretch and ended up winning 69-66 in the end. Tops in scoring was Ja’Kobi Gillespie with 22 points, five assists and four steals. Rodney Rice added 15 points with two rebounds and two assists, while Selton Miguel put up 13 points, three assists, and one rebound in 30 minutes of work on the floor.

Illinois Fighting Illini Betting Preview

Over on the Illinois side, they’ve had quite a strong season so far in a difficult conference themselves—despite a couple of 1-2 stretches it’s been pretty smooth sailing this year. Illinois went 7-3 in their first 10 games with losses to Alabama, Northwestern, and Tennessee. The Illini otherwise beat Eastern Illinois, SIU Edwardsville, Oakland, MD Eastern Shore, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Wisconsin in that time. Following a winning streak over Missouri, Chicago State, Oregon, Washington, and Penn State, Illinois hit another one of those 1-2 stretches with a lone win over Indiana. The losses bookending it were versus USC and Michigan State, resulting in a 13-5 record in Illinois’ first 18 games this year.

Matched up against the Spartans in a road game Sunday, Illinois was all tied up 36-36 going into the second half. The Illini were outscored 44-42 the rest of the way, however, resulting in a tough loss of 80-78. Will Riley was the leading team scorer, coming off the bench to contribute 19 points with six boards and two assists in 26 minutes of action. Tomislav Ivisic added 13 points with four rebounds and five assists, while Kylan Boswell had 13 points with four assists, nine rebounds, and five turnovers. Morez Johnson chipped in 11 points and six boards as well.

Illinois vs Maryland Prediction

I’m going to take a stab at Maryland. This should be a fun matchup overall though, and you could certainly argue it the other way. The Terrapins put away a scrappy Nebraska team thanks to 44.8 percent shooting in their last outing, but there were some statistical blemishes involved. Maryland was out-rebounded 36-32, missed five of 12 free throws (58.3 percent), and had 12 turnovers for 14 Cornhuskers points. Still, Maryland continued a solid stretch of scoring; they’ve hit a nice 69 or more points in every game so far this year.

As for Illinois, they fell to a very good Michigan State team in their last matchup, thanks mostly to 10 turnovers, 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range and 63 percent (17-of-27) from the line. That makes 69 or more points surrendered in three straight games for Illinois, who is normally a good enough offensive team to keep opponents at bay despite high totals. If Maryland has a hot shooting night in this one, I think the Terrapins keep pace.

Minnesota is Awful

There is no other way to put it, this Minnesota team is awful, and this is a team that could easily lose, and it wouldn’t be all that shocking. Two games ago against Ohio State, they ended up losing in double overtime by a point. In the last game against the Wisconsin Badgers, Minnesota scored 59 points while their defense gave up 80 points and that led to the defeat. At halftime, they were down by only a point, but in the second half the defense gave up 50 points, and that led to the defeat. Minnesota as a team shot 38.6 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from behind the three-point line.

Minnesota is averaging 68.2 points per game while the defense is giving up 67.5 points per game. The offense is ranked 321st in the league while the defense is ranked 76th. They are averaging 15.7 assists per game. This is a team that has had some awful second half and in this one game, they need to try and play a complete game. Dawson Garcia has been the top player for Minnesota averaging 18.4 points while shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from behind the three-point line.

Maryland had lost two games in a row, but they are coming off quite the victory in the last game. UCLA Bruins Betting Preview

This year the Bruins kicked off the year on a pretty great run, but they’ve struggled over the last handful of outings. UCLA beat Rider in their opener this season but then fell in game two to New Mexico. The Bruins would quickly find their footing on a nine-game win streak after that, taking out Boston University, Lehigh, Idaho State, Cal State Fullerton, Southern Utah, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, and Prairie View A&M in succession. The last quartet of games has been a 1-3 stretch, however. UCLA has a lone win over Gonzaga in that time. Otherwise, it’s been losses to North Carolina, Nebraska, and Michigan for an 11-4 record so far this year.

In the Michigan game on Tuesday, the Bruins were in trouble by halftime, hitting the locker room with a 47-37 deficit on their hands. UCLA was outpaced 47-38 the rest of the way and finished out with a sizable loss of 94-75 in the end. Leading the team in scoring were Tyler Bilodeau (five rebounds; three assists) and Sebastian Mack (seven rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench), each with 17 points. Eric Dailey added 13 points with two steals and two rebounds, while Kobe Johnson had 12 points with four rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes.

Over on the Maryland side, they similarly got off to a very nice start this season, however, the Terrapins haven’t found any success so far this calendar year. Maryland beat Manhattan, Mount St. Mary’s, and Florida A&M in their first three games before a loss to Marquette. A win streak over Canisius, Villanova, Bucknell, Alcorn State, and Ohio State ensued over the next five games, then another loss to Purdue. Maryland got back on the proverbial horse with another win streak from there, taking out St. Francis PA, Syracuse, and Maryland Eastern Shore in succession. In the last two games, the Terrapins have recorded a couple of losses however, falling versus Washington and Oregon for an 11-4 overall record so far this year.

Matched up against Oregon on Sunday, the Terrapins played fairly well on the road against a tough opponent, all things considered. Maryland went into the locker room with a 45-42 edge but got outpaced the rest of the way 41-34 and lost 83-79 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Rodney Rice with 19 points, three boards, and four assists. Derik Queen added 17 points with five rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals, while Ja’Kobi Gillespie chipped in with 16 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal on 28 minutes of work.

I’ll just stay with Maryland here. The Terrapins are sitting on a couple of tough road losses versus tricky teams in their last two outings, but to their credit, they’ve played pretty well in that pair. In the loss to Oregon on Sunday, Maryland shot a nice 47.5 percent from the field with 30 rebounds and 16 team assists. The 51.8 percent shooting allowed on the other side was just too much, however. The good news is that the Terrapins are scoring quite well this year; they’ve hit 69 or more points in every game so far, and 74 or more in 14 of 15 outings.

As for UCLA, they were blitzed by a tough Michigan team in their last game, eventually surrendering a blistering 61.5 percent shooting from the field and 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from outside. The Bruins are generally a good scoring team this year themselves, but they’ve been prone to a few duds here and there: fewer than 66 points in three of the last six. I like both teams to score well in a fairly high total on Friday, with Maryland powering it out at home. Should be a fun one.

I’m with Maryland and the points here. I know that the Matthew Knight Arena can be a tough place for opposing teams to go on the road and win most nights (apparently not for Illinois), I just think that Maryland is the more talented team here and if Oregon would be favored, I could only see it being by maybe a point or so. The Terps took one on the chin in their own right but I expect some positive regression for them going forward in a bounce-back effort here. I’m not sure they win the game outright, but I think Maryland at least keeps it close. Give me the Terrapins and the points.

Maryland Terrapins Betting Preview

The Terrapins have been in very good shape for most of the year, outside of a couple blemishes. Maryland beat Manhattan, Mount St. Mary’s, and Florida A&M in their first three games before taking a loss to Marquette. The Terrapins would take out Canisius, Villanova, Bucknell, Alcorn State, and Ohio State in the next five before another loss to Purdue. Since then it’s been three wins over St. Francis PA, Syracuse, and Maryland-Eastern Shore.

In Saturday’s game versus MD-Eastern Shore, the Terrapins came out of the break with a dominant 40-24 advantage. Maryland cruised from there on 41 second-half points and took the win 81-66. Topping the team’s scorers was Julian Reese, who doubled up on 23 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Derik Queen also filled up the stat sheet with his own double-double of 18 points, 14 rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Selton Miguel chipped in 10 points as well.

Queen is leading the team in scoring so far this year, notching 16.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Ja’Kobi Gillespie is second with 13.7 points and 4.5 assists per game. Reese leads the way in rebounds per game with 9.1, and he’s also scoring 12.8 points per game.

Washington Huskies Betting Preview

Over on the Huskies’ side, they won six of their first seven games. The lone loss was to Nevada; otherwise, it was victories versus UC Davis, Seattle Pacific, UMass Lowell, Alcorn State, Colorado State, and Santa Clara. Washington would lose to UCLA and USC in the next pair, then rattled off wins over Eastern Washington, Washington State, and NJIT alongside a loss to Seattle U on December 23.

On Sunday versus NJIT, Washington took a pretty easy win. The Huskies were in control 46-26 after the first half, then hit a 44-27 run on the way to a blowout 90-53 result. Great Osobor (six rebounds; three assists) and Zoom Diallo (five assists; three rebounds off the bench) each scored a team-high 12 points. Wilhelm Breidenbach added 10 points with five boards as well.

Osobor is sitting in first place among Washington’s scorers with 14.2 points per game. He’s also leading in rebounds (8.7) and assists (3.6) so far. Tyler Harris has 13.5 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game, while Diallo is sitting at 10.6 points per game.

Why the Washington Huskies will win

I’ll lean toward the Terrapins, but this should be a pretty great matchup regardless. Maryland blew right past MD-Eastern Shore in their last game, shooting 47.6 percent from the field with 37 rebounds and 17 team assists. The Terrapins held the opposition to 25 percent (4-of-16) from outside and scored 23 points off 14 turnovers in a pretty solid all-around effort—despite a slower second half. In any case, Maryland has scored 74 or more points in every game this year, and they’ve held opponents below 68 points in six of the last seven outings. That said, the Terrapins also gave up 78 points to Marquette and 83 to Purdue, so Washington could post a pretty sizable total here if all goes well.

Speaking of Washington, they didn’t have any issues at all versus a struggling NJIT team in a much-needed win their last time out. The Huskies shot a smooth 55.7 percent from the field in that one, bagging 33 rebounds and 21 assists to boot. Back in early December, the Huskies had a couple of rough outings versus UCLA and USC, posting 58 and 61 points respectively in those games. Since then, however, it’s been 70 or more points in four straight matchups—three of which were won with 87 or more points in each. I like Washington to be competitive initially here, with Maryland powering out the cover.

What a Bad Season for Syracuse

It has been a very disappointing season for Syracuse and they are coming off another loss in the last game. Syracuse in the last game faced off against Georgetown, and they ended up losing 75-71. Syracuse shot 42.6 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the three poin line. Syracuse had fear different players that put up at least 11 points. Eddie Lampkin Jr had a strong game putting up 18 points, five rebounds, and one assist. 

Syracuse on the season is averaging 79.3 points while the defense is giving up 79.5 points per game. The offense is ranked 103th in the league while the defense ranked 339th. Forward Donnie Freeman is averaging 13.4 points while shooting 46.8 percent from the field and 29 percent from behind the three point line. 

Can Maryland Build on Last Game?

Maryland faced off against Saint Francis in the last game, and they scored 111 points on the way to the blowout victory. The offense scored 55 points in the first half and in the second half they scored 56 points. The Terrapins shot 61.8 percent from the field and 57.7 peercent from behind the three point line. There were five different players that put up at least 11 points. Selton Miguel put up 24 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Maryland, on the season, is averaging 87.8 points, while their defense is giving up 60.7 points per game. The offense is ranked 9th in the league while the defense is ranked 15th. 

Why Maryland Will Beat Syracuse

These are both teams that can score, but the big difference in this game is the defense. Syracuse is giving up 79.5 points and they are going to really struggle to defend again here. Maryland’s defense is giving up 60.7 points per game and they are going to step up in a big way here. Maryland is going to go over the 90 point mark here, and they are goin to cruise here. Maryland Terrapins Betting Preview

The Terrapins beat Manhattan, Mount St. Mary’s and Florida A&M in their first three games this year before a loss to Marquette. Maryland has beaten Canisius, Villanova, Bucknell, Alcorn State and Ohio State since then.

In the Ohio State game on Wednesday, the Terrapins led by a wild 50-17 margin at halftime. Maryland cruised from there in an 83-59 blowout win. Ja’Kobi Gillespie led the way on 23 points with four assists in the victory effort.

Purdue Boilermakers Betting Preview

Over on the Purdue side, they beat Texas A&M-CC, Northern Kentucky, Yale and Alabama in their first four. The Boilermakers are 2-3 since then with losses to Marquette and Penn State around wins versus Marshall, NC State and Ole Miss.

In Thursday’s matchup versus Penn State, the Boilermakers were drilled 40-24 in the first half. Purdue scored 46 more points from there but still lost by an 81-70 margin. Trey Kaufman-Renn and Fletcher Loyer each scored a team-high 15 points.

I’ll lean toward Maryland. The Terrapins dismantled a decent Ohio State team in their last outing, shooting 46.8 percent from the field with 39 rebounds and 22 points off 17 Buckeyes turnovers. Maryland has been scoring great this year so far; they’ve hit 74 or more points in every game.

As for Purdue, they shot a nice 51.1 percent from the field in their loss to Penn State, but the bad first half and the 24 turnovers (for 32 Nittany Lions points) did the Boilermakers in. Purdue has hit 70 points in eight of nine games so far (58 versus Marquette being the outlier), so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a fairly hefty total here. I like Maryland to eke it out in a close game, though.

Ohio State Buckeyes Betting Preview

Ohio State managed wins over Texas and Youngstown State in their first pair this year before a loss to Texas A&M. Since then it’s been three wins over Evansville, Campbell, and Green Bay before a loss to Pittsburgh.

Matched up against the Panthers on Friday, the Buckeyes were up 48-39 going into the second half. Ohio State was outscored 38-29 from there and ended up losing in OT 91-90. Bruce Thornton topped the team with 24 points and nine assists.

I’ll stay with Maryland. The Terrapins made short work of a winless Alcorn State team in their last outing, shooting a blistering 57.1 percent from the field with 21-of-24 (87.5 percent) from the line. It continued Maryland’s scorching scoring run, as they’ve hit 91 or more points in three of the last four games and 74 or more in every outing so far.

As for Ohio State, they took a good Pittsburgh team to the wire in their last matchup but couldn’t finish the job. The Buckeyes were out-rebounded 36-29 (16-8 offensive) and missed 10 of their 29 free throws (65.5 percent) in that one. Ohio State has scored 80 or more points in six of seven games so far this year—but did notch just 64 in the outlier versus Texas A&M. Maryland will be a tough customer at Xfinity Center, and I don’t quite think the Buckeyes will get there.

Maryland has scored 85.4 points per game and has allowed 58.7 points per game, while also averaging 39.7 rebounds and 14.3 assists per game this season. Derik Queen is averaging 16.0 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, while Maryland is shooting 48.9% from the field, 71.2% on free throws, and 32% on three-pointers this year. 

Alcorn State Braves Betting Preview

The Alcorn State Braves are 0-8 this season after they lost to South Alabama in overtime by a score of 74-65 in their last game. Alcorn State only scored 29 points in the second half, which sent the game to overtime, before only scoring four points in the overtime for the loss. The Braves shot 32.3% from the field, 38.5% on three-pointers, and 80% on free throws in the game. Keionte Cornelius led Alcorn State with 24 points and two rebounds in the game. 

Prior to that overtime loss, the Braves lost to UC Riverside by a score of 69-52 and Washington by a score of 77-60. Alcorn State has scored 54.6 points per game and they have allowed 79.8 points per game, while also averaging 35.3 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game this season. Keionte Cornelius is averaging 9.9 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, while Alcorn State is shooting 33.4% from the field, 70.6% on free throws, and 29.3% on three-pointers this year.

Maryland vs Alcorn State Prediction 

Alcorn State comes into this matchup looking for their first win of the season, but they did get to overtime last time out. Maryland has won three games in a row and their lone loss came against Marquette. The Terrapins are shooting over 48% from the field, while Alcorn State is shooting just 33.4%. I don’t like laying this big of a number in college hoops, but I think the only play is Maryland or pass.
